I have noticed that the Golf 1 has a nice small diameter rear spring with loose spring cups on the shock absorbers. I was wondering if anybody tried adapting this to the front of a super. It looks doable but I dont have any info on the spring rates. This could be a nice low buck approach for wheel clearance.

Sounds like its worth looking into but 3 points to note:
1) Whats the spring rate and the o/a unloaded length?
2) Will the spring fit the upper cup?
3) I think there is a bulge at the top of the standard strut body for the standard screw in fitting that will prevent any cosy fitting cup or sleeve sliding on.
How is the bottom cup secured? I've not had a good look at Golf (Rabbit) spring/damper rears
