Hello, GL fan's. I'm Erik aka Blizzard from the Netherlands. I got this nickname because of my white aircooled rides. Like this '79 vert of mine.

However, the 1303 in this topic is Black.:D

I've learned alot about upgrading a bug on this forum. Now it's time to start my own topic here on the GL forum. I already have a topic on a dutch site but there I won't find the right feedback and knowhow Everybody gets here.

In april 2008 I bought the ultimate basis for a GL beetle. A '75 1303.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding001.jpg~original
It was in a bad shape. The front off the chassis was rotten as can be without the wheels falling of. So I replaced the complete front of the chassis. This is not a perfect resto job but a quick fix so I could use this ride as my clubmeeting and test car for brakeconversions and so on.

After that was done the only place that needed some more welding was under the backseat.

That took a few months. The complete car looked like this at the first meeting.

The welding done sofar was done to get the 1303 streetlegal. The next job was to fix the rear bumpersupports.

Before I got the new 6 cm. rear wings painted black I wanted to go to the next meeting so I replaced the 8J and 7J x 15 Fuchs wheels for 6J and 7 J x 15 so the rear wheels could fit under the original rear wings.

On Ebay I found some used Kerscher wings already in the right color so I bought those for 140 euro's.:)
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/d5af_1.jpg~original
Now I could fit the wider wheels right away. The wings needed to be replaced anyway.

With the (new) used flared wings it looked like this with the 15" fuchs wheels.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding047.jpg~original

I did not like the look of the 15" fuchs under the flared fenders so I swaped an other set of 4 fully polished 8J x 15 fuchs wheels that I had for a set of 16" Fuchs that I polished and painted myself.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding064.jpg~original

The edge of the wings needed some trimming to fit the wheels without rubbing.

All these changes still don't make it a Germanlooker. So after all the cosmetic changes I was ready to start on some handeling and braking upgrades. The last thing I needed was the right wheels with the right ET to fit the wide 944 turbo trailingarms in the back.

When I found a nice set of Cup 2's I could finaly start to work on the chassis.

I already have all the parts I need but some parts are not jet instaled.
The plans that have a - are the things I still have to do. Whith a + are already instaled.

On the front.
+ 22 mm anti rollbar
+ Urethane bushings
- Kerscher struts
- 944 NA spindels for use of the original speedo cable
- 944 S2 hubs
- 944 S2 Rotors
- 4 pot calipers for the 28 mm x 299 mm disks with the right cup size to create the right ballance with the rear brake setup.

Rear setup
+ late 944 turbo trailingarms
+ New Zimmermann disks, pads and handbrake stuff
+ 944 S2 rear calipers
+ Urethane bushings
+ 944 S2 torsion bars
+ Yellow Koni shock absorbers
- rear adjustable anti rollbar

Wheels will be Original Porsche Cup 2 17" x 7 ET 55 on the front and 17" x 9 ET 70 on the rear.

To fit the yellow Koni's (which were made for an IRS beetle) on the 944 turbo arms I made a bushing from an unused urethane bussing for a 19 mm. front anti rollbar. The 12 mm. hole is to small as you all know for the 14 mm. Bold for the 944 turbo arms. So I made a 2,5 mm thick steel insert outside 19 mm. inside 14 mm.

I shortened 2 long (LHD right side) steering rods from a regular beetle to use with the 944 NA spindels and a rack and pignon steeringbox which is standard in a '75 super.

On the left is a standard length '75 > steeringrod. In the middle is a shortened rod and on the right the complete custom length rod.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303/Afbeelding243.jpg~original

I also painted the Kamei spoiler again becouse it had some paint dammage.
Because the fenders are 7 cm wider I also needed a wider rear bumper. It is a glassfiber Kerscher one that fits around those wide rear wings. So the front had to be painted also. I bought a new bare steel front bumper without chrome finish and painted it. The old chrome bumpers are for my '79 vert project.

Wow that's alot of ground to cover in such a short thread :D

It looks good so far. What kind of plans do you have for the motor?

Blizzard
April 21st 2010, 01:45
O, Yes the engine. Mmmm. The engine that came with the car was put together by a person who did not know how to build one. So that one is junk now.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding177.jpg~original

The engine that is in the car at the moment is a standard 1600 and belongs in my 1303 convertible. I had to put that engine in 2 days before the biggest aircooled event in The Netherlands. Becouse the original engine went like KrKrKrkrkrkrgggrrrgr the day before. and than it died. When I disambled the engine I saw a couple of things that were not ok. All kind of sealing materials in the oilgalley's, a 1200 coolingfan in a 1600 coolingtunnel. A piece of silicone sealer was blocking the hole for the middle crankshaft bearing. So the connectingrod bearing ended up like you see above. It melted. The rest of the engine was fine. The heads are like new. I think they were new when the person build this engine so I'll use those on a future project. But I won't use this crank, case and rods anymore.

I build a 1641 for my 1200 beetle. That car is also a project car. I put some powdercoated coolingtins on the engine and will drive this engine in this car for this summer.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding208.jpg~original

The engine I'm working on for this car is a 2.0 Type 4.

I almost forgot I had a thread on GL.net So here are some updates. Nothing shocking but still updates.

The thread title sais it already, it's a roling rebuild. At the anual check they found a few rusted eareas that had to be repleaced. Both the heat channels had to be replaced and the rear floor was also rusted under the battery.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding124.jpg~original

This kind off job should be done with a complete body off resto. But it can be done with the body on the chassis. Instead of the regular rubber or closed cell foam I used weldseam sealer between the new heaterchannel and the new floorplates.

This car is also a test car for different engines we build.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding318.jpg~original

Now the stock 1600 motor out of my 1303 convertible was out I sprayed the engine compartment black and I upgraded the rear trans mount.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding324.jpg~original

The next motor was a 1641 cc. with a dual Solex 34 PCI setup from Riegert.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding328.jpg~original

The stainless firewall was a temporarely solution to hide the green engine compartment. All my friends said it was even more ugly than the green paint.

What I wanted to show in this post is something that has never happend to me before an d I hope will never happen again. When I went to a specialist to fine tune the Riegert carb setup something happend when he was almost done. Suddenly the left carburator was'nt responding to turning the mixture screw. He send me home and told me to see what's wrong. So I drove home (a few miles) and started to remove the intake manifolts and carburators. When I looked inside the carburator I noticed that there was a jet missing.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding333.jpg~original

Threre is only one way a loose jet can go. I expected bent valves and, and. To my suprice the jet was still in the intake port of the cilinder head. It was'nt even damaged.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/blizzard1974/1303%20LS%201975/Afbeelding335.jpg~original

The problem with this jet in the venturi of the 34 PCI Solex is that if you tighten it to hard the mixturetube brakes off wich is the end of the carburator. I used a little bit of Loc-Tite to solve this problem. My advise, use a little bit of Loc-tite on every nut /bolt and jet that can fall into youre heads.

I know it wo'nt happen to me again.

How are your plans for a roll cage working out at the moment? I saw some scetches earlier from you that were VERY cool and well thought-out ;)
I think our friends over here would like them too!

October 7th 2010, 03:00
Well Wally, instead of writing or talking about it. I'm actualy working on the rollcage right now. The plan is that next season I have the rollgage installed, got the brake bias in order with the new front brakes. And this is a secret so shhhhh. I'm working on a 1776 or 1904 or maybe a 2110 type 1. Instead of posting every little thing I work on I plan on showing the build proces once its running in the 1303.

And yes it's a one off a kind rollcage for a bug. It's a OMP cage designed for an Alfa Romeo Sud Sprint wich was an old track day car off mine. When I sold that car I kept the rollcage. It fits with miner adjustments in a superbeetle.
I bought a few rollgage pipes and connectors from OMP to make the whole car more rigit / stiff.

First ruff drawing. Measurements are all wrong. It's just to visualize the idea I had.

Hi Erik,

Good cage, nice car . Do the front braces join near the centreline of the car and connect to the front frame? Also, It might be worth cross bracing the roof bars as at the moment everything forward of the rear hoop can lozenge due to a non-frontal impact.
Why not do away with the short strut from the front leg mounting point up to the suspension leg brace and extend the door cross brace up to the suspension strut top? That will nicely triangulate everything on that elevation drawing. I am always wary of making cage connections into the mid point of the bars as it puts a bending moment into the connected bar whereas all the connections should be at node points to maximise the bar section properties.

For my new engine I want a front mounted oilcooler. I could mount it in front of the Kamei spoiler or could cut holes or slits / vents in the spoiler so I can mount the oilcooler behind the spoiler.

I have found a less subtle solution at the swapmeet in Hannover Germany 01 May 2011. It's a Remmele frontbumer complete with spoiler and a place to mount the oilcooler. The air that past the oilcooler is directed upwards. So no air goes under the car and makes it possible to mount an airsplitter.

The blinker holes are a bit to big for my taste so I will fix that first and spray it black. I will mount it as close as possible to the car body. When finnished I will post a picture of the end result.

This is it.

Thanks for the compliment. I also like your ride:goodjob:. The color on my car is a VW color called Flash red.

I was afraid the camber plate with steel on steel mounting would carry the sound from the wheels into the interior. but its surprisingly quiet and comfortable. I used alot of sound deadening materials under the carpet, that also helps to cancel out any vibrations coused by rough road conditions.

In the following topic I described how I made the camber plates.

Thank for the feedback. I have read the topic before, i like uow you made it that's why i'm asking the experiences :) I would be afraid of noise too, so it's good to know it's not so bad. What about cornering capacities, is it sharper than was with the original plate? What wheel alignment do you run?

I use 944 spindles. 944 struts lean more inward compared to 1302/3 struts. So I need more camber adjustment to fix the positive camber caused by the 944 spindles. I also wanted to use standard fenders and to fit the 7J cup-2 I had to move the standard camber adjustment on the framehead as max as possible inward creating even more positive camber. I have a few degrees negative camber with the camber plate also max inward. I still have to go to an alignment shop after I get the new rear tyres. When that is done I will post the amount of camber and caster and how it handles. As you can see in the photo of the camber plate in the car I moved it as far back as possible to create some extra caster. It's not much but about one cm. but every little bit helps.

The camber adjustment of the 944 spindle on the KW coilover is also max > negative camber.

You car looks outstanding. It was your camber plates I used as an example for the guys at Silver Project to make the ones they now sell for 1303s. Good job! Because of you many can have camber plates like you're using (Not me yet...I was hoping the Silver Project guys would give me a set for free since I gave them the idea and the stock upper strut bearing they used for dimensions...Alas, it didn't happen).

I, too, am using 944 spindles. I'm hoping I won't need to buy the camber plates. Thus far, I have slotted upper hole strut housings (coil overs using MK1 Golf strut housings), TWO crash bolts per side and Topline's camber+ inner control arm bushings. If I can't dial out the positive camber with those, I'll spring for the SP camber plates.

I don't know how low it is compared to stock. Its as low as possible without scraping the Kamei on speedbumps. I can put one finger between the tires and the fender. I like the look when the edge of the fenders follows the tire with the gap the same front to back. I even raised the back again when I put a heavy subwoofer behind the backseat.

The brake parts used in this car are on page 2 of this topic.
The only things I had made or made myself are the bearing adapters for the 944 S2 front hub on 944 NA spindels, the second thing is the axial to radial caliper mounts. I refuse to pay to much for a square bar of alluminium with 4 holes in it.

@ Yogie
The difference in sound is level is high. The design of the CSP airintake system is great. I am very happy with it. The only things I added are the stainless hoseclamps on the rubber connector and fitted two case vent hoses to the bottom of the filterbox.

This car is more of a comfortable cruiser than a weekend warrior or racecar. Lots of sound deadening, full leather interior, good audio system etc. So when I heared the difference of intake sound level in somebody elses car I bought one the next day.
When the type 4 goes back in I will also order the CSP aircleaner for that engine. The black 1303 will have the reagular K&N airfilters with lots of intake "music / sounds".

DIY oilcooler bracket and airscoop.

The olilines in the final instalation go over the driveshaft and the CSP shocktower brace / torque bar. With the type 4 the thermostat and oilfilter are on the case. The oil lines go to the oilcooler between the left carburator and the fanhousing.

With the type 1 full flow system, the oilfilter is under the left rear taillight I fitted a sandwichplate between the oilfilter and mounting bracket, from there it goes to an inline bypass thermostat that is mounted between the left top shockmount and the gearbox.

This topic started with my black '75 1303. The titel of the topic is rolling rebuid, But it's not rolling at the moment. All the previous welding I did was to keep it on the street asap and street legal. That was done between 2008 and 2012. It was in storage for the last eight years. There were 3 options, sell it (not realy an option), keep patching it up or restore it completly. I went for the third option.
I will not bore everyone with sheet metal photo's (only this time). I will post the more interesting stuff when I start to rebuild with new brakes, 2056cc type 4 with Ahnendorp heads wih 42 and 36 mm valves and their forged counterweighted crankshaft, 260mm fan and GPP exhaust

The 6 cm wider fiberglass fenders are bent out of shape from hanging on a wall for 8 years, thats why the fender does'nt follow the same radius as the tyre. On the pictures at Spa they are'nt even painted it's still the red gelcoat of the Kercher fenders luckely for me the same collor as the rest of the car.

The wheel mounted without spacers is to close to the springplate, so I have to use spacers. I had the 4 cm. spacers and the red gelcoat 6 cm. wider fenders so that was the fasted option to go and drive. I have several options, 2 cm. spacers and 4 cm wider fenders, or new 6 cm. wider fenders and paint those

The black rear bumper is a Kercher fiberglass one to fit around the 6 cm. wider fenders.

No turbo yet, but I do have my '86 944 turbo front brakes complete.

I already had the spindles and calipers but was still looking for the hard to find and expencive '86 turbo hubs.

https://i.imgur.com/Qgy3Bbj.jpg?1

The spindles and hubs of a '86 944 turbo are 1 year only parts.

I instaled a bumpsteer flip kit and drilled trough the axle for the speedometer cable. The spindle does not have the hump next to the strut mounting where the cable enters a beetle or 944 NA spindle so I welded on an inch of steel pipe to fit the rubber grommet to seal and protect the speedo cable.

The black set of Porsche BBS Sport Classic 2 wheels were already sold but the seller had an other very nice set in Silver. The rear is 9J and the front is 7,5J.
Most sets of SC 2's are with a 10J wheel for the rear, thats to wide for me.

There is a difference between the 17"and the 18" sport classic wheels, the 18" front wheels do not have room behind the center cap for the 944 dustcap and speedo cable. But that is easily fixed with a 10mm. spacer and longer wheel studs. The black 1303 already has the wider flared fenders to fit these wheels with the 10mm. spacers.

Excellent wheel choice, congrats! Silver and black hides the beauty of these wheels, red might be too much so I would go for gold with polished lips. Pops out, yet classic. (especially with black calippers)

Already had a few sets of late model caps without the hole, so in my case this was easier.

How do you drill a "square" hole?

Blizzard
July 4th 2020, 18:57
Well, you take a 4.0mm. drillbit, a lathe to get the hole in the middle, a small square file, a caliper gage, a spare speedo cable to testfit, file the ROUND hole out to 4,95mm. square, and somebody who tries to be funny.

Blizzard
July 4th 2020, 19:23
"Drilling" the square hole in the hub grease cap was easy.

To make the holes meet up perfectly inside of the axle, with one hole from the axe side and the other from the back side of the spindle under an angle was far more challenging. I asked 2 machineshops if they could do it and guarantee that they would not f#(k up my very hard to find '86 turbo spindles. One backed out and said they did not do buisness for private persons. The other one was to busy. So I did it myself with the help of a laserbeam on a drill press.

H2OSB
July 4th 2020, 19:44
Bet that was nerve wracking. Did you find you were holding your breath until the holes met?

Blizzard
July 5th 2020, 07:37
The hard part was the depth of both holes. Especialy from the back. If you drill to far the cable would hit the bottom of the hole instead of bending and going into the axle bore.

The trick to make sure the holes line up perfectly is to drill a very small pilot hole from the back. I first drilled a 2mm. hole and checked if it was meeting in the middle of the axle bore. It was of by 1mm vertically. I adjusted the clamp of the drill press and drilled the final diameter pass very slowly so it would not follow the pilot hole and take more material away from one side. This only works if the pilot hole has a very small diameter. If the pilot hole is to wide the final drill bit wants to center in the pilot hole and will bend and most likely brake.

If you are off horizontally and the pilot hole would meet low in the axle it would be an easy fix and drill deeper into the axle. If the hole from the back meets up high you would drill deeper from the back.

So the lineup left to right is the most important to get right.

It also took 3 drillbits to do the job. It is very hard steel, take it slow and use cutting oil. If it gets to hot take a brake to let it cool down. Otherwise it could take a whole lot more drill bits.

H2OSB

I have a couple of sets of those as well. No problem if you use axial to radial adapters and radial mounted calipers. The '86 turbo calipers have a axial 94mm. bolt spacing. The NA spindels have a 76mm bolt spacing.

I've tried making steel adapters 10 years ago but it was to heavy.

https://i.imgur.com/41edr9k.jpg?2

The '86 turbo front disks are the lightest 28mm. disks.

And with the original '86 turbo spindle and caliper there is no need for an adapter and 2 more bolts.

I want to weigh the difference between the front beake setup on the red 1303 and this combo. Both use the same disk and brake pad size so there is theoretical no difference in performance. The weight difference is why I wanted to finaly complete this setup.

Let me throw this out there...if Lanner(flat) sees it, he'll roll his eyes so severely, he may, in fact, hurt his eyeballs. 924 spindles have 94mm caliper bolt spacing, use typical Beetle bearings and bearing spacing, and use 15mm ball joints, which is very handle if you have a 1303.

There's an issue with using them, but I will only detail if you're interested....otherwise I'll just be prattling.

Look at you, going right to the problem!

Those of us in the States with Supers got screwed out of factory disc brakes, for some unknown reason, so when I saw how similar the 924(early) spindle was to 1303 spindle, I had such great hope. The biggest drawback to the 924 spindle is the mounting ears.

The 924 uses a 257mm(10.1 inch) rotor, thus the ears place the caliper too close, radially, to the axle line for most of the rotors we might use, so some kind of adapter would be required. This would probably be good for radially mounted calipers, but if using axially mounted calipers, you might as well just use 1303 spindles with the typical disc brake conversion adapters and have no steering geometry issues.

The other, relatively minor, issue with 924 spindles is the steering arm. It is identical to the arm on 944 spindles. So, if you've already made accommodations for 944 arms, as far as the tie rod length goes, you're set. You also need to flip the tie rod end to the top, like you would for 944 spindle.

That's it. Just another option

The reason that I replaced the 1971cc type-4 with the 1904cc type-1 is it

The cause of the failure was a locknut that came loose of one of the swivel ball valve adjustment screws,

I am afraid to use these again. I am 100% sure I tightend all the locknuts.

With the locknuts loose the adjustment screws are very loose inside the rockers and can move side to side.

Is there enybody else who had this happen??

The nut became stuck between a rocker and the cylinderhead, breaking a piece out of the bottom of the head.

I also made a modification to the cylinder tins. The credit for this idea goes to the engine builder of Skywalker's Type-4 in his Splitwindow bus.

https://i.imgur.com/zmncONY.jpg

With a Type-1 style or 911 style shroud the air now comes from the top instead of from the back like on an original type-4. With this mod air is guided around the heads towards all 4 exhaust ports. The original tins only have this at the number 4 cylinder. The number 4 cylinder already gets the least amount of air with a 911 style cooling ( The air has to make a S shape from the back of the fan to flow between the shroud and number 4 cylinder / head . Flowing air takes the path of least resistance. So without this mod the cylinder that gets the least amount of air flow is also the only one with a more restricted path for the airflow, The path of least resistance
are the gaps between cylinder 3 and 1 and the shroud, alot of air is lost without cooling anything.

No joke, it runs and drives super smooth, lots more torq than the Type-1 1904cc..:)

I started with reamed 47 idle jets reamed to 55. The AFR was good but the engine was not running even on all cylinders.

I measured these jets and they were all differend in size. If I would make them as big as the biggest one the engine would run to rich.

The other jets I have are 52 and 58 Idle jets. The 52 were around 15 and the 58 idle jets around 12 on the AEM Air fuel gauge

I could borrow a jet reamer set from a friend and started to enlarge the 52 idle jets in very small increments until the gauge was showing numbers in the high 13's.
When driving at a constant RPM there was a small dip around 3200 rpm at the transition between the idle circuit and the main jets.
I adjusted the float hight from the starting point of 6mm. to 5.5mm. and the dip was gone.

I will post a youtube link later to show how constant the AFR is from 1000 to 4500 rpm

Very happy with the result.

There is no take 2 for a first start. To dark and short, but it's proof it's alive.

It sounds better in real life than on video. For some reason my camera mic. does not pick up the exhaust and induction noise but you can hear the ticking from the valve train very clear on video.

For the first start and cam brake in it ran very rich 11 12 on the AEM AFR gauge

I started with 55 Idle jets. And 1,5 turns on the Idle mixture screws. For the cam break in I only synchronised the carbs and let it run at 2000 rpm. for 20 minutes. Next time I will start testing different jets and tune the carburators. They ran surprisingly well straight out of the box.

The carburator tuning is done, so I no longer need an O2 sensor. I replaced the CSP Phyton with the GPP exhaust. It sounds great standing behind the car. In the car the intake sound is much louder than the exhaust. When buying this exhaust you can choose between 3 sizes. I chose the largest and most quiet, which is 160mm.

I second that, and that's out of the engine compartment.

And the exhaust under the new 2056cc Type4 is a CSP Python for type4 in a beetle.

Am I crazy or what. Removing a perfectly good running engine after just 700Km.

Just because I want to know how the 2056cc performs NOW, I can not wait as long as it takes to finish the black super to hear and feel this engine.

I will install the 2056cc. on thursday and hopefuly have it running in the red super at the end of the day.

It runs perfect at Idle up to 2500 rpm but I have to adjust the acceleration pumps and put the right size jets in the carburetors.
I drove 1/2 a mile for the first time at 18.00

That was the goal for today and I am very happy it finaly runs and drives.

Next thing to do is tune the carburators and put some miles on the thing with a big smile on my face

Small update on why I did'nt already post something about driving with the new 2056cc. motor. To work on the carburator jetting the motor has to be warm, and that is a problem at the moment.

It has oil pressure problems when the oil gets warmer / thinner. The oil pressure is good when the engine is cold, 2 bar at Idle and 4,5 bar when revving the engine.
I suspect the problem is in the loose fitment of the oil pump in the crankcase and / or the O-ring that seals the oil pickup tube in the crankcase.

I tested this with a warm engine and the front of the car high up in the air on jack stands. The rear of the engine now has a high oil level with both the O-ring and the oil pump submerged in oil. The oil pressure does not drop during this test.

I live in the netherlands which is very flat, so constantly driving uphill to keep oil pressure is not an option for me.

I used a new O-ring from the victor reinz gasket set on a like-new oil pickuptube without any extra sealant.
On the Bug Me DVD Jake Raby uses Permatex aviation form-a-gasket on the O-ring. When I watched this I thought it was overkill. Well probably not as it turned out in my (crank)case.

To try and fix the problem I now used 3 different oil pumps, 2 original Type-4 pumps with new O-ring and a modified Type-1 26mm pump. All 3 have a loose fitment in the crankcase. The Type-1 pump even slides in with the crankcase nuts surrounding the pump torqued at 20Nm.
And the pressure keeps dropping when hot. It still has oil pressure but only 1 bar. The short term plan is to see if the problem can be fixed with an O-ringed oil pump.
If the oil pressure keeps dropping when the oil is getting up to temperature, I have to spit the case to see if the 80 cent O-ring around the oil pickup tube is the problem.

Not looking forward to that.

Everything else on the engine performs perfectly and it has done 100 kilometers over short trips. Trips short enough to not have the oil pressure problem.

CAD (Cardboard And Duct tape) design number two. It is now a 2-piece design to have the sheet metal also seal behind the Crankshaft Pulley.
This is a temporary version out of thin alu. sheet. Final version will be out of thicker aluminium or steel.

I did not post anything for a wile. But just like owdlvr I also would like to keep this forum alive. I have not posted any updates about my super beetles because I was distracted with a (new to me) old VW.
Last April I bought my first bus. So first a few pics and updates on the "new" '73 deluxe 7 seater bus and than I will show some updates on my supers, the red and the black one.

This is what the bus looked like when I bought it. Stock hight, wheels, ugly amateur interior panels.

This is Germanlook.net so I will post some related updates on the bus.
First update, was for better road handeling.

lowered spindles and new Koni shocks in the front.

The chassis of the black 1303 is as new. It got new floorpanels and napoleonhat. After the welding was done it was sandblasted and got a good rustprotection treastment. Epoxy primer, black paint and I did the stone chip protection myself.

I like to do everything myself, thats the hobby for me to learn new skills.
Uptill now I spraypainted everything outside or in the dusty garage.
For a more profesiional result I bought some electric fans, led light bars and filter material to build a paint booth.
First I made a small one as a proof of concept to see if the airflow setup and filter were doing their job. So I started with the fenders and a few small parts.

https://i.imgur.com/rNfrEjN.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/j6788Sn.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/lkpvez1.jpg

End result is almost perfect, a little orangepeel and one little fly landed on the wet paint. All easy to buff out. But no dust craters, runs or dry spots.

New glassfiber fenders are ready to paint without much extra work.
The body of the car needed more work. New undersides of the heaterchanels,
and some small easy patch panels.
https://i.imgur.com/q0qwORT.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/lWnkTCM.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/2DjVbUi.jpg

The biggest and most difficult rust repair problem I faced was on the roof, next to the sliding roof opening. It rusted from the inside out.

https://i.imgur.com/6ZJpdAy.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/hedzeKY.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/aFiGcEL.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/YYbPbK0.jpg

I am glad that job is done. Now I am waiting for warmer weather so I can continue to paint the rest of the car and put everything back together and drive a superbeetle again. The bus is nice, but it's a slow big heavy brick compaired to the beetles.
