After lurking here for a while, time to post some pica's of my project.
I am not sure what it is exactly, is it german, resto, callook or race? you tell me:confused:
It all started in December 2007, after I sold my T2a single cab with 190Bhp G60 engine I bought this Oval. The plan was to use it as a daily and give it some TLC in de weekends.
This is how I bought it, original.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/62694.jpg
Planted a new gearbox and 2ltr type4 engine.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/68858.jpg
Narrowed, adjustable beem with dropped spindels.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/69513.jpg
And this is how I drove it (first time out was EBI II)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/69518.jpg
To make a long story short, it's a total resto now. The plan is to have the resto-cal ish look on the outside, with an inside, chassis and suspension that is ready for some strip and circuit aktion.
Let's start with the wheels;
I have two sets, fuch's and MAG industries, both with Porsche bolt patern.
One set for street use and one set for circuit/strip abuse.

For an oval they even don't sell the bad fitting repro sheet metal. The only thing I could do is restore the old metal.
Together with some Tikimadness leftovers  (drag race oval) I will try to fix it again.

Good to see you have made progress since I last looked at your main thread! One thing I'm not sure about is the inner bit of your spherical bearing mount. It looks like you have a rigid outer (hole in steel plate) and a urethane surrounded inner mount, this will lead to movement and potential fatigue in the bolt. I think if you just made the inner part rigid it would be good (much better than a lot of other kits that use loose outer plates...

Hi Rich, I love reading about your build. You do awsome work.
You saw that right about the inner mount, my first version (like manny sets out there) where bolted only on the outside of the steel plate. This new version has a 12.9 bolt with a precision hole in the steel plate and uniball, the urethane is extra and not really needed (I think/hope)
Cheers, Paul.

Your doing excellent work, I'm taking the body off a 1303 soon so it can be painted, I'm glad that we don't have the same problems down here as you do there.
I might be seeing things but in the photo http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99903.jpg it looks like there is some sort bulge on the chassis floor at the rear end behind the seat rails, is this for something special or is it a piece of your bug puzzle waiting to be fitted?

First I checked the old with the new pedal position, look good to me 8)

Then fitted the seat and for the first time in a few years I took place behind the wheel ;D
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/103731.jpg
When I place the steering wheel 5cm closer to the seat, the position is spot on. The steering column can be moved 5cm without cutting or welding, how cool is that.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/103732.jpg
Before I weld the channels, I had to be sure that the trunk still fits. And it fits like a glove.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/103733.jpg
The gearbox and engine are raised, so the trunk has to be raised as well. After some measurement it seems that the trunk needs to be raised by 12cm.

Welded the (ex)spotwelds (left-rear), and tried to make it invisible.

Worked a few hours on the Tilton box today, unfortunately all the hours and effort can't be seeing.
First I made the pedals 100% fit in the box, then I took away all the sharp edges, changed the windings to metric windings, welded the box allround and grind-ed the welds.
When to box was to my standards I welded it to the body, just a few cm to go.

When I was working on the left pillar today, I noticed that the right pillar (out of a '66 car that already was welded to the heater channel) had a different shape, Damn... how Manny differences can you have >:(.
The left pillar is ready, well maybe a few tab's with a hammer away from being ready.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/104552.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/104554.jpg
On these picture's you can see that the pillar out of the '66 car has a sharp bent, a '56 car does not have this bent.

Some jobs take more time than expected, these innerwings are that kind of a job.
The holes from drilling the spotweld had to be welded, they did not match with the new location. In the past someone mounted an emergency switch, this had to be closed as well.
After welding the holes, I smoothed them and I cleaned the area that can't be reached later on.

Fahrvergngen,
I am currently trying to sort out my brakes (944 single pots at the front and 928S4 rears + hydraulic handbrake). By all my calculations the pedal movement on a standard 19/19 dual m/c should have been 28mm + 5mm for the free play until the pad touches the disc, then the component flexing and pad compression come into play resulting is a moderate pedal movement. I do have much more than this that may be a m/c problem or flexing of the seal/handbrake mech in the hydraulic handbrake. the standard 944 single pots have virtually no movement on their own with the 19mm cylinder as the caliper mech holds the pad to the disc with no relief or knockback.
However, the braking performance was such that I to am considering a 1" dual m/c (possibly BMW) to shorten the pedal travel. My next try will be a 944 stepped cylinder 23/19 that should confirm or not a) the rebuilt 19/19 m/c is at fault b) the pedal pressures are still acceptable with larger m/c pistons and c) improve the bias further to the rear - the car will be used for Autotesting.

Don't they complement one another? With the balance bar you set-up the 'static' distribution and by using the proportioning valve you set-up the 'dynamic' distribution for a different characteristic at higher pressure / deceleration levels. Thus, better enabling you to approach the 'ideal' at given conditions?!
When searching for a reference picture, I found some clear text about it: http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_proportioning_valves.shtml

Guys, its not wise to mess with expensive changes in cylinder sizes from just pedal 'feel' alone without running the pads in on the fly for a good bit, it can make a huge improvement to the pedal height and save you chasing your tail, frame type sliding calipers need a lot of running in, personally, a mechanical balance bar is far preferable to hydro valves which also affect pedal feel, i don't like these and avoid them like the plaque, as Clive says, you shouldn't need both.;)

I don't deny that the two could complimenty each other but I doubt whether many on here have the ability to be able to fine tune the braking characteristics to optimise retardation, hence my reference to road car where the load changes would merit constant fiddling and tinkering in a desparate effort to get the best retardation. I'm a strong advocate of the KISS principle and adding in too many variables and adjustments that are beyond the simple running of a vehicle detracts severly from enjoyment.

Wile the front is removeable, I have good access to drill the cage holes.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/113728.jpg
Never thought the hole would have this shape.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/113729.jpg
The cage can not hit the pedalbox, innerwing and fueltank, and has to end in the sparewheel well to be welded to the Porsche frontwheel mounts.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/113730.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/113731.jpg

Time to restore the window corners, this is not easy cos this is where the '58 is different from the '56
First I had to cut some more of the '56, and then I started to make my own '58 - '56 puzzle.

The above picture of the shock dome on the simple 0.8mm thick inner fender does raise the question (I am sure you expected this, but I'am willing to bite anyways) what further stiffening of the inner fender your planning? I know its not load bearing like with a 1303, but still the shock dampening creates considerable forces nontheless.

Wally,
Yes, the innerwing is deff. not strong enough. But the rollcage will solve that ;) . The rollcage-tubes will run from under the dash to the upper shock mount and ends in the spare wheel well (on the front a-arm mount)
Cheers, Paul.

http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/125507.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/125509.jpg
To avoid bumpsteer, the steering rod's should be parallel to the A-arm.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/125506.jpg
After lowering the steering rack by 1,5cm, the rods are parallel and bumpsteer Will be minimal.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/125510.jpg
Tomorrow I will do some tests with a wheel mounted, hopefully I got it right.

The inner ball joints on the rack should be over the inner pivot point for the lower control arms paralleling the angle the strut travels in. Suspension geometry is tricky!!!!

To follow the rules while building my cage I had to place the seats first.
First I slammed the original seatframe.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/126665.jpg
After that I mounted the 914 frame on top.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/126666.jpg
