Hi guys,

After 10 years I've decided to sell my standard and start a new project with a super. My aim is a fast road car with stock(ish) look and detailed engineering.

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2011/07/7.jpg

Since I couldn't locate a r&p 1303 I decided to go oldschool and build a retro flavoured 1302. Finally I could swap my previous car for a '72 Marinablue 1302..so there you go, before-after pictures..

Car was in accapetable shape, but nothing more. Was driven daily.

Let's see what is on the road..

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/04/k%C3%A9k2_.jpg

It had MOT till end of 2011, so I made a few short trip, then it was time to start working..(September, 2011)

There are weak points, but body seems healthy, and most importantly have not been wrecked! Not bad from a 40-year-old car.

Not the best pan ever..but the frame head was changed to a newer one, it is still OK. (Note the original tow hook..not common these days)

I was storngly thinking to save more money and buy the complete front panels, but decided to go with just the repairs as they should be as strong or stronger than the aftermarket complete ones. Not my favourite picture.

My buddy sent me a picture of the car and a girl with 3 legs :lmao:

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/05/panorama_.jpg

Well, I was always a big fan of sunroofs so it was predictable that the car should have one. I managed to find a perfect example, rust free and fully working.

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/05/tet%C5%911.jpg

Instead of cutting off the original and welding the new one, or cutting just the sunroof into the original roof (as we did on the yellow car and worked perfect) I've chosen the 3rd option

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/05/tet%C5%912.jpg

so structurally all the pillars and the roof remained original. Turned out well I think.

Was missing only the upper side, when I came up with an idea: a colore matched tunnel would look fine (planning no or few carpets inside). But, hey what color will the car be?

Bogara_ZO
July 14th 2012, 18:36
So I had to find out the color ASAP..not an easy decision. After checking (nearly) all the factory Porsche and VW colors I decided to choose from the original ones to make the car as authentic as possible (thus keeping the value...seems I'm getting older or don't know)

For the 8/1971 - 7/1972 model year the following colors were available:

Texas Yellow / Texasgelb (L10B),

Brilliant Orange / Leuchtorange (L20B),

Kasan Red / Kasanrot (L30B),

Black / Schwartz (L41),

Gentian Blue / Enzianblau (L51B),

Marina Blue / Marinablau (L54D),

Sumatra Green / Sumatragrün (L61B),

Pastel White / Pastellweiß (L90D),

Kansas Beige (L91D),

Turquoise Metallic / Türkismetallic (L95B),

Silver Metallic / Silbermetallic (L96D),

Gemini Metallic (blue, L96E),

Colorado Metallic (red, L97D).

+ the special editions like the Marathon Beetle/Baja Champion SE - Marathon Metallic (silver, blue L96M); Cabrio and Jubilee models (20th million edition) -Saturn Yellow (L13M) except USA and Europe "May Beetle" editions, that were available in Saturn Yellow (L13M), Blood Orange (L21E) and Willow Green (L63K).

Since it is going to be a summer car it should be light & some others were out of my taste. I kept Marathon Blue (you know Christian Stelzer's ethalon), Turquoise and Silver Metallic plus the original Marina Blue and Kasan Red. Than I realized that an 1302 have to be built in oldschool so Marina Blue and Kasan Red final arrived. MB is quite rare in the GL scene and it was the original color of my car, while the KR is more sporty, looks better with chrome and it was a one year color for Beetles as far as I know.

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/05/1302k%C3%A9k_.jpg
http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/05/1302piros_.jpg

Being different is cool, a 2 year only car in a 1 year only color is a ticket to this, so the winner is Kasan Red L30B.

Bogara_ZO

Since I knew the color, the pan could be finished. (April, 2012)

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/05/alv%C3%A1z7.jpg

However it's an interesting color (not so red but somwhere between red and orange) the pictures don't show it well, it seems more orange than it is (maybe the lights + cell phone).

Actually I'm not sure about the tunnel, but let's wait it. If I don't like it than comes carpet :)

There are things to do till body gets painted.

I have a '73 1303 witch is original Kasan Red so I think it was a color for '72 and '73 models.

Do you know this 1302 from Gerd Weiser? it's also Kasan Red.

I could't work on the car for weeks..

Than made the pan ready to roll (June, 2012). And here is the point real play begins..let's see what is underneath.

For start I bought a perfect steering box as mine was a bit tired and urethan busihings (black ones) everywhere.

Rear: usual Porsche 944-affair

- 944 23.5mm torsion bars
- Original (new) torsion covers to be able use the poly bushing that came in my complete kit
- 944 steel arms
- 944 spring plates
- 944 disc brakes with the stock floating calipers for now
- yellow KONIs

Still need to mount the 944 rear sway bar, buy the swans for the e-brake and the cup-brace

Front: nearly all parts from Topline.

- urethan bushings everywhere
- camber+ kit
- idler arm bushing
- pitman arm bushing
- lower steering column bushing
- bumpsteer kit
- 22mm sway bar with caster-fix bushings
- billet sway bar clamps
- race strut mounting bolts
- new M/C
- Strut brace required

and KW Variante1 coilovers with dual springs, 30-80mm adjustability and a Remmele sticker :lmao: (maybe it was made exclusively for Remmele in the past as dual spring is not a common option)

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/07/REMMELE.jpg

All the above mentioned goodies in one picture:

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/07/egyes%C3%BCl1.jpg

Note that long tube. It's my new fuel line with 10mm outer diameter and made from copper, so will last for ever...as the installation lasted for ever as well. Finally it goes in and come out as the original did, but won't do it again, was a real PITA.

You might be right on the color, I found both informations on the web  Anyway, it's OK for a '72.

However Mr. Weiser's car is in my top 3 favourite GLs, I haven't chosen the color to copy his awesome 1302..It seems just we have a similar taste.. and I discovered this in many other details, you will see. I would be very happy if can build something similar to that beauty

The car shop where the bug sits asked me to go ahead as they needed more place. So picked up some of the friends to put the body back on the pan. Fits well and like more the colored tunnel.

Was more simple than expected, but as you know there is always one screw...

Since we were in a hurry, I had no time to put everything in place.. there are no calipers, no pedals, no rear cup brace etc. The goal was to make it roll as soon as possible. Will change everything that is not brand new (srews, bearings, front brakes etc.)

Yeah, all pics in a week uploading looks quick, but one year is really fast, believe me. Most take years and years longer to restore just the pan and body.
For example, my car took me 9 years...
So in my view, you must have worked your *ss off and did a great job!

I've decided to sell my original BBS LMs because they were 17" and I was looking for something older in 16" as 15"s are too small for my taste.

As BBS RS, BBS E30, Compomotive CXN and 3 piece Fuchs were out of my budget, I was after a set of BBS Mahle but finally I came accross a set of these rare Fondmetal baskets. I like the design, they are very lightweight and perfect in dimensions: 7x16 ET21.5 fronts, 8x16 ET11 rears..that means no spacers, less unsprung weight. They are not common even on Porsches.

I bought a nice set of brakes at SPA. I was confused about the color (was thinking on red as well), but finally choose black ones with vented rotors. They are 6 pots and extremely light, each weights less than 1,5 kgs with pads! Unsprung weight again.. :)

On the rear I will use NA 944 floating calipers and vented rotors now, than similar Taroxs if current setup is not enough.

Looking very sharp! Did you craft a new wiring harness from scratch or did you base if off an existing one? What's your track width (front and rear) with those wheels and tires? did you have to get much wider fenders or still stock?

Hi Kevin,

I got them in "sold as is" condition, so they were taken apart in a local shop to see what we have. The tacho was OK, just the pointer had to be repainted and the counter sat back to zero. The rpm required new electronics (50 EUR) than it was re-calibrated to work well.

After that I polished the faces and reassembled them with the chrome rings from (german) ebay. BTW the 52mm and 80mm (km/h) can be ordered from any VDO dealer (like the glasses if you need them), but the 105mm (rev. counter) was a longer story..finally I found a german guy who makes these rings (for 40 EUR or so)..I can send you the contact if you need.

Wiring is from scratch. The old one was in poor condition, I need some extra wires for the gauges and It's always good to know every color in your harness..just in case.

Originally I was planning stock fenders but it won't work with the wheels, now I'm in the 2-4 cm range (1-1,5"). Both of front and rear fenders I actually have are SAID to be 4 cm widened.

Have tried the rear ones on (made by Hoffmann Speedster), they seems OK with the wheels (will see under load & with own tyres) and that what counts.
Based on Kerscher's website (http://www.kerscher-tuning.de/kaefer/index.php?gruppe1=Kunststoff-Teile&gruppe2=Kotfl%FCgel) +4cm rears are ok till 9x15 ET-39 with 225 tyres..I guess it's not valid as they have the same numbers for +6cm fenders as well. The +2cm sounds acceptable: they are recommended till 7x15 ET16 with 225 tyres, this is not far form my 8x16 ET11 with 205 tyres. In extra I have 944 NA rear brakes and not sure of the offset increase. If Lanner is right (I think he is), it is 22.5mm per side, than fenders have to be 4 cm wider on rear. Can anybody prove the track increase caused by the brakes?

Fronts are made by Kerscher, 4cm widened as I measured. Belive or not I had no time to try them on yet :-/
The same website recommends +2cm ones till 7x15 ET16 with 195 tyres, so my 7x16 ET21.5 with 195/45 tyres should fit nicely under that. I use standard brakes in this sence (no offset increase) and IIRC the front track of the 1302 is slightly narrower than 1303. Also Lanner states stock wings are OK for 7" wide ET38+ rims, so +2cm in front should be enough here.

Now I have to try them on to see how they fit. Getting +2cm fenders means no spacers and stockish look, keeping these ones means wider front track. BTW now the rear track is increased by a good 60mm compared to front..does it have any negative affect on handling?

This is my first super, no experiences yet just numbers from the web..sorry for the brain-fart :o

I test fitted the fenders, the numbers above seems to be correct, so an other plus point for Lanner. Rear track increase is about 5 cm/side. These are from a crashed speedster, left one arrived in two pieces, just the right could be tried on. 205/55 tyre you see here will be changed to 205/45x16.

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/11/gfkh2.jpg

since right seemed OK I asked a friend to repair the broken one and fill out the holes. Based on this picture it turned out well, I'll try it on in a week or so.
http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/11/s%C3%A1rv%C3%A9d%C5%91%20tati.jpg

On the front I've decided to go with 20mm spacers to fill out the arches, get wider front track and turning radius. Hope I'll be able to keep the stockish look at the end. During the mockup I had some issues with the left one, will try it again with all the bolts to see what we have there. 195/45x16, size is final, tyre is not.

I bought these bucket seats from the '70s. The stripes are red but far from the car's color. They are in acceptable condition, so will give a try as is and see if I like them with all black carpets around or not. Retrimming is always an option.

They are compact enough for the bug but big enough for me. Weight is 13 kg / seat, 7 kg less than my (recliner) Sparco Torinos, so an other14 kgs were saved. Let me know what do you think.

Hey there,

Any update on mounting your rear fenders? You said you were going to try and squeeze 4cm fenders over those wheels. Are the fenders shown above the ones you were talking about?

Sorry for the very late answer, I am very busy nowadays. Yes, you can see the fender above I was referring to. Left one didn't turn out well, now it has a completely different shape, it have to be done again..no sense to try it on

I worked 2 days on the car, first day was about the headliner. First, I used some dynamat-style stuff for noise reduction.

After the headliner, the windows, rubbers and scrapers were put in place. Trims are genuine aluminium and not the common aluminium look-a-like plastic ones. Hope they will last for years.

Wiring is almost done, still waiting for some gauges to complete the dash.

http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/12/vezet%C3%A9k1.jpg

Finally the Tarox calipers are installed with spacers, pads and brake lines. I had a little issue with the spacer that was included in the kit. The pads didn't allowed them to fit well so some machining was required. Not a big deal but surprising in case of such a nice and expensive kit, that should be 100% plug and play. Can't find the pics of this, but will upload asap.

Having access to the battery area and back seats is not easy if you have bucket seats. These mounts are based on a Weichers frame (oiginally for Opel Corsa A) that required some fabrication to fit.

I wasn't happy enough, so it was time to make decision about the interior. All black would be the easiest but not for a summer car. I was looking for something unusual but period correct. Finally I voted on the tartan/plaid interior, like Porsche did in the 70's. The more I see it the more I like it.

Original Porsche fabric is $$$ and none of them is for my taste, but tons of other colors are available. Finally I chose the original "Royal tartan", this package arrived from the UK a few days ago. Can't wait to see it.

Sorry for the crappy phone pictures, I'll make better ones next time.

The seats looks more vivid in real, and I feel this tartan theme period correct as not just the GTI but also Porsche used plaid fabric in the '70s (bigger checks would be even better)

With current wheels it needs +2 cm in front, +5 in rear. Thanks for Ricola for the useful infos on his website, it helped a lot.

Bogara_ZO

To make it as strong as possible the extra piece was hammered to a "hat shape" so it attaches under the fender's edge on both side. The outer side of the rear fender had to be shorten to keep the original shape and to line up with the running board.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Mmv7j5g_d9M/Ujr9STZhyYI/AAAAAAAAAWw/SjE0Ki7rXEI/s320/20130829_165158.jpg

Btw the +5 cm should be over on the limit where stock running boards can be used, at least mine looked awful (no pictures). The front section of the fender was sliced up again and got a "V" shape so the bottom edge is near to stock now and it looks ok to me.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L4vHcGzKEMo/UkFR495baXI/AAAAAAAAAXI/ww18FgnEqaE/s320/20130916_163956.jpg

After the second test fit it was good enough to go ahead, time to extend the bumper brackets (30mm) to clear the fenders.

I changed my rear tyres from 215/45 to 205/45 as I needed more space for fender clearence.

Sidenote: Originally I was planning 205/45 as well but the PZero I put on the 8" had too much strech for my taste so I upgraded to 215. As PZeros are not available in 215 I bought a pair of new Conti Premium2s that seemed to be at least 225s or so when monted! Long story short I found that Contis are more robust, while Pirellis are more narrow than any other tyres in the same size. Finally I choose Michelin PilotSport3, it is said to be a very good street tyre on low weight cars (MX-5, Clio Sport etc.) and the 205/45 fits perfectly for the 8 wide rims, exactly what I wanted at the beginning.

Continental:

Guys, i need your input on wheel alignment. What do you suggest for a road car? Will be driven in city, in twisties and on motorways as well. On the front i have stock parts except the camber+ bolts from topline, so i can adjust 1 degree more negative camber or so, back is from a stock 944 na. I have read different setups here, so real life experiences would be nice. Thanks!

Clatter

Oh, I love how this turned out...
The fender widening is so subtle I didn't even notice it at first!

IMHO,
You want as much camber in front as you can get.
Unless you have over-steer issues, it's not enough.

In the rear, as the car is lowered, you get too much camber.
The 944 spring plates can help, but often do not do enough.

So, as much camber as you can get in front,
As little in the rear...

Thanks, exactly what i wanted :)

As for camber I thought about -1 in front and -0,5-1 in rear. For toe zero in front ant slightly toe in on the back...but exact numbers based on experiences are still well come.

Thanks.
No way carrying extra weight without function :) Back seat is in place for hiding the audio (future plans) and sound isolation purpose. Though I'm pretty sure you will find no passangers on the rear bank, but it is still nice to have access to the battery area or throw a bag there. On page 3 you find pics about the Wiechers seat consoles i am using, they are designed to pop the seats forward so there you go.

I was told they were Recaros but can't prove that as i could find no signs at all. Bought them in Germany (from a nice BMW2002), maybe they are vintage Konig or Wiechers ones.

However they are bucket seats the back is still adjustable in a 0-15 deg. range that's why you can see the adjuster on the outer side. Might be useful during a longer trip. They weigh only 6 kgs each, way less than the previous Sparcos (recliner) did.

Ignore the rubber fuel lines, braided hose with AN fittings are part of the winter project.

After 3 years, yesterday I finally drove it! Engine sounds good, brake and suspension feel ok, no oil leaks so I'm happy with it.

Just Beautiful...

A style of build user 'vujade' coined - "Resto German".
Subtle, understated, OG in the details...
Love it!

The ride height/stance is perfect.
Rake is for Cal-Lookers.

Oh, and, can you explain the oil pressure gauge fitting?
???

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Oh, and, can you explain the oil pressure gauge fitting?
???

Sure :) it's temporary solution

I'm trying to keep the dash simple, so originally inteded to make a nice custom bracket for the rearview mirror and put these gauges there, similar to this:

http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n112/Bogara_ZO/aa3_zpsc3700be5.jpg~original

I did the wiring too, but the wire harness seems to be too wide to make it invisible..at least need more time for that project. I wanted to drive the car ASAP and found a gauge holder in the garage that doesn't fit in the radio area. Again, I'm sure I will not put them there as I'm not a fan of the space shuttle style dashes. Will cover the hole with a c/f plate or similar and try to find a good place for the gauges. (Maybe under the dash?)

Regarding the stance the back is a tad lower than I wanted (hard to set the TB bars without the full interior). I'll see how it performs in city driving & on speed bumps than will raise a spline later if needed. But no rake at all.

I love the way it looks! As SteveC said, the color combo is excellent. Personally, I like the rear exactly as it sits. Unless it causes problems, I would probably bring the front down ever so slightly to match the rear.

Thanks! Exactly, but a proper wheel alignment should be done first. Negative camber in front should help fender clearence, so i guess it can go lower a bit.

And things has been changed for 2016. I have to move to a flat with no garage so the car has to go

If interested or know somebody who might want a nice GL, let me know. Check the For Sale section for infos. Can send pictures of every single part of the car.

Change the flat, so the car can go...

Haha, cheers guys I was hoping these kind of reactions :lmao:

Let's say this was the main reason, of course I can always rent a garage but had to realize that I am too busy nowadays for a hobby like this and money is always welcome when moving... Just put 2500 kms in it during last year, have no time at all to work on it. Really don't want to let it sit in the back of a garage, was built to be driven so hopefully somebody can enjoy it from this side too. But if I can not find a new home for it, I will finish every single bolt as planned at the beginning.

So, the season started..

First there was the annual Spring Meet (http://sleepair.blogspot.co.at/2016/04/tavaszi-rajzas-2016-spring-meet-2016.html) and last weekend an other event continued after a 5-year brake, the Volks&Roll (http://sleepair.blogspot.co.at/2016/05/volks-roll-6-kiskunlachaza.html)

I liked it very much even in the past, mainly because there are every kind of cars of the era not just VWs which can race against each other on the dragstrip. As the oppurtunity was given, I tried both the car and myself on 1/4 mile. I made only 3 heats 15.9, 16.4 and 15.8 which is not bad for 2000ccm in a fully loaded (full trunk, full tank, 2 persons etc) car & tall gearbox (3.875&0.89 4th). It was not build for drag but always good to know being in the ballpark of 15s. For reference an e28 525i BMW with LSD, and a Golf1 with 2.0 16V run exactly the same times, while a 996 4s did 13.9 on the track.

I think with a bit of practice, punishment (shifted into 4th, changed gears around 6k) and more aggressive launch it should perform around 15.00.

Now I am curious of the exact torque and hp, I will put it on a dyno soon. I am expecting 130-140 hp at the flywheel.

Lovely as always..

I can see how you would want to sell;
Once the car is 'done', what's to do? :p

What was the spec on the motor?
Was curious how it ended up..

15 flat is pretty fast!
Drag racing = run it right up until it almost blows up;
Hard to do if you built with love..

Hi

What are the other ratios in your transmission.

I'm tossing up ideas for a gearbox for my sons bug, going 3.875 with 2.9 1st and 1.9 2nd, just not sure about 3rd & 4th. Would like to keep it good for freeways but Im worried that a tall 4th like yours will make it bog going from 3rd to 4th. Motor will eventually be a 2442 oxy boxer so bags of torque

I don't know how you could bare to sell such a beautiful car.

Cheers Steve

There is still room for improvement, minor but important things to do to make it better and faster
It's a 2056 cc built for cruising not racing with Raby internals, reworked 914 heads (44x38) and 44 IDFs. Low end torque is impressive (drives easily in 4th in town) but revs happily to 7k. Drag is not my cup of tea and absolutely not the purpose of this car..it is more about handling which is the best part of it I think.

Hi Steve,

It's a Rancho Pro Street, 3.875 & 3.80, 2.06, 1.48, 0.89. Was hesitating on the 0.82 "freeway cruiser" but after driving one I abandonned the idea immediately as the gap felt enormous between 3rd and 4th, no way in town (ie under 80 km/h).

With my relative small overall diameter (205/45x16) I am doing 130 (GPS) km/h @ 3900 which is something i can live with. With a torque master like your oxy I would suggest it as a good combination between town/freeway but depends what you are buliding that car for.

Now it is sitting in a rented garage while I am moving, than I will see if I can find any other solution
