Hello GermanLooker

Wally asked me to write something about my project.
I want to fulfill this command, upps, this request.

As I have already said here https://www.germanlook.net/forums/showpost.php?p=91090&postcount=1497 and next,
my progress is very, very slow.

Now, only a little Teaser

Haha!
That is extremely cool!
Can you keep it under the decklid? Any pics of the Variant as it is now?

thanks!

I hope it fits under the lid.
But in any case, I have to cut off the intake manifold.
We will see.

There are no pictures now.
Everything is still original but disassembled and must be welded here and there a little bit.

Now I first adjust the engine and transmission, so I can build the brackets.
Then I want to build the brakes, then edit the body.

Very cool!

(Psst: I like it so much as I am slowly preparing a rad build with a watercooled (6) unit into an early notch myself)

In the type 3’s variant world, the only way to retain the stock engine hatch height would be to make a custom inlet maifold to reduce the height of the engine.

With my notchback it’s more like a Karmann Ghia now with the rear boot/trunk area as the engine bay. Fare play not only for keeping a Type 4 on the road but the STI transplant also.... hats off to you sir!

Hi

A little bit more.
As i said, my progress is very slow.
Real life is always in pole position.

The first two Pics showing the gearbox that gets installed.
Third picture shows my dummy gearbox with which I want to calculate the location and mounts.

What was the gearbox from?

5Speed Subaru WRX
Modified with Subarugear's parts.

Hi Wally

Because of pictures.
Found a few older ones, but not much has changed so far.
Was when moving into our hall, but have not been so much space for a long time

Hello

I could use your help or input.

In my project, I have difficulty finding suitable drive shafts.
Unlike the Beetle or Bulli with Subaru transmission, the installation position is much lower and therefore I need shorter drive shafts.
Even the shortest ones available (Type3 automatic, left shaft) are still a bit too long.
You can cut drive shafts.
The special company that does that, only cuts hollow drive shafts. All VW or Porsche drive shafts I would like to use, are made of full material.

Someone an idea for a suitable solution?

I suppose you really can only go with a custom axle then.
SAW makes those right? Probably only stateside companies do that kinda work...
Or Finnish.

Sway Away still makes axles in any length you could want.
These are Empi, and cost a lot less.
Here with 1" narrowed arms and a 915 trans FWIW.

They have no inside shoulder/stop for the CV, so they are forgiving WRT length..

Sheesh, Clatter, I didn't realize you were on here as well

Apologize for the slight hijack

Nice! and good info, tnx from me as well!

Hmm!
Thanks for the info.

Ok, what means ...they are forgiving WRT lenght...?

SWA has only the normal lengths in the selection.
My shortest drive shafts (typ3 automatic, left side) are 15 5/8 inches exactly like the first selection at SWA.
But I guess I need some shorter ones.

It is about creating enough space for the length compensation.
Will try to get some space on the flanges and joints.
Let's see.

Oh yes, there is also a small progress.

Intake manifold is welded (has to be made nice) and I have removed the turbo, disassembled, rotated the housing of the pressure side by 90 ° and reinstalled.

Forgiving -With Regard To- length...

Sorry to use an obscure TLA (Three Letter Acronym) :D

The axle does not have a 'stop' or 'shoulder' at the inside of the splined area;
They are held captive by the flanges at both ends instead.

You just need to make sure there is room at the ends each way when the axle is right at horizontal, and the flanges are closest to each other
(And that they aren't so short as to fall out at full droop of course). :o

This because these are often used on off-road long-travel applications,
And they need a lot of spline to adjust for the extreme travel.

There has been some discussion of the axles banging on the transmission-side flange seal, but nobody has yet reports issues, and many run these,
Seems that the wheel-side flange, with no seal, gets the beating and doesn't mind.:p

Little Progress

I finally found time to measure the adapter. Got a 3D dummy to avoid mistakes in the original.
Not everything fits yet, but it looks good.
I borrowed the wheels from the neighbor. He is not allowed to drive right now. Bent his Boxster a bit. (alcohol).
The tire is a bit too wide (255-40), but it is possible to try it on.
225-40 is enough for me.

For the front I have to go a very expensive way because a specialist accepted the order and received the parts, but neither executed the order nor sent the parts back and did not buy them at all. (to replace the replacement value).

Looking, will be nice to follow your build. I'm also upgrading the brakes on my 412, using Porsche Boxster parts.

Nice brake upgrade! Interested how you will modify the fronts.

This upgrade is a copy close to the construction of you and your specialist.

The front will be made as the spicegirls sang. ....." when two become one "...

Since there is no separate area for small talk here in the forum, I am attaching the lines here.

Hello you lovers of air-cooled VW technology

I wish everyone here a blessed Merry Christmas and a healthy Happy New Year.

Unfortunately, not much is written here anymore, but the scene is still not idle. Yes, I haven't had much to say lately either, but my project hasn't stopped. It just rests for a long time several times because of difficult things, but it goes on.
In the hope of making some progress again in the coming year, I will try to share them with you again.

Hope you've had a nice christmas, and I wish you and all other Germaniacs a happy new year.

I am sure we all applauds any progress, but life can come in the way of our projects. Stay well and confident, good luck with future building!
