I hate asking questions like this. I should just decide for myself. Anyway.... I have a '74 Super that will be painted Audi Denim Blue Metallic. I'm looking for some opinions. Should I use a blacked out trim on the sides and hood or none at all? AND.... If I use the trim, should the headlamp rings etc. be black also? The bumpers will be body color matched regardless. I was thinking no trim on the sides or hood and all black handles and rear badge (headlamp rings, I'm not sure). I'm wondering if the black handles will break it up enough or will I need the trim......... ahhhhh decisions. THANKS!!

I understand your pain. I've agonized over this seemingly trivial detail way to much. My final thoughts. No trim and one color on everything or keep all the original trim. On my 57 GL I've decided to keep the trim. Try and get some sleep. :)

on my '54 I've decided to keep the body and trim stock, but its riding on an irs pan that had been modded (944 brakes, 901 5 speed and type4 engine, and 15" phonedials)

The only non-stock trim I have is a set of 356 headlight grilles instead of headlight lenses.

I was in a show about a week ago, people assumed it was stock, despite the phonedials untill they took a look under the decklid, didn't get as much attention as the beetle with the red and cream two tone, but lighting was bad and I was going for a sleeper look anyway, I might even pitch the phonedials in favor of some chromed stock wheels, but I'll need to have some adapters made to bolt some wide five wheels up to the porsche pattern.

I'm a big fan of the monochrome look. Paint everything in the body color. That's just me, though.

I wrestle with these same thoughts all the time.
It can drive you mad! :silly:

I think I may just keep my trim black until I paint my car.
Then I will probably shave it off and have the bumpers & headlight rings color matched to the car.

shave it and color match the door handles, bumpers and headlight rings. pre-58 i can see leaving it. anything else shave it.

I could live with the blacked out door handles. If your bumbers will be body color, I don't think it would look right with any body trim. Oh yeah, paint the headlight rings body color too.

Shadowbug, get some chrome 912 wheels and hubcaps (nice Porsche crest). No one will notice unless they look closely at the crest on the hubcaps.

There's certain colors you can get away with coloring everything, silver for instance. But blue........ not sure still. I'm still thinking I need to contrast it a little. I'm leaning toward colored bumpers and headlamp rings, black handles (doors, decklid and hood), black rear decklid badge, smoked front signals and red tails w/smoked signal and reverse lenses. It'll probably change 10 times by the time I paint.

I agree with you lightning. The contrast is very important with certain colors. I personally like the decription you just gave the best. On the other hand, I think monochromatic blue paint schemes look great also! So I think either way it will look good. It just depends on what you want!

Yeah I'll probably go with what I just said. These little details are driving me nuts. The car's not even together yet. Just gotta take a breath and do it one step at a time. Thanks fellas!

I'm going with the removal of the body trim, handles painted black then the bumpers and headlamp rings will be body colored along with the mirrors.

An after thought, basically my look will be the same as late model (old a/c) Mexican Bug. In a sense, my "custom" look will actually be a factory trim level.

Mirrors, I'm up in the air still about paint or black. I may just use the Mex. factory mirrors. My friend has a 2000 Mex. Bug. I was studying his a few weeks ago. Its nice to see it "done" on the car. Kinda helps you make up your mind.
