View Full Version : 944 brakes with dropped spindles

I have 944 na brakes on my beetle, currently I'm using adjusters, however I want to drop the front just a little more, can you use dropped spindles with the 944 brakes?
what needs to be done to make it work.

Hi,

I mocked up a set of 944 Turbo front brakes (4 piston, 298x28mm rotors) on my cb dropped spindles (disk brake) and they fit fine. You do have to make an adapter in the end to mount the caliper.

I'm sure the 944 N/A brakes will work as well as they have the same caliper spacing as the 944 Turbo calipers.

I used a stock 951 front hub (no machining) with original Porsche bearings and had some spindle sleeves machined up. Check out the 993 Biturbo brake upgrade article on the main page.

KDanie had the original idea and I just adapted the idea to fit my needs.

I had bought a set of dropped spindles for disc brakes and there was no way yo make it work with the na 944 brakes, they got sent back.

Shadowbug, I used CB disk brake dropped spindles, it requried cutting some of the original caliper mount off and drilling/tapping. It is easier to use the CB drum brake spindles. I have a book at home that shows the adapter dimensions for the N/A calipers. I can scan it and email it too you if you like.

I tried to use disk brake spindles and I couldn't get them to work without alot of hassle. So I made a set of adapters for the drum brake spindles. They were alot easier. Then I bought a set of dropped drum spindles and they bolted right up to my adapters and every thing works fine. While making a set of adapters is not really difficult measuring off a set of old spindles is a real bear. I ended up making a quarter inch plate template to make sure the dimensions were right before I started machining the ($40 a piece for the metal) adapters.

So would you guys say it's better to use drum dropped spindles and machine the adapters, or dose Lanner sell them (adapters for the drum spindles)?

I am planning on N/A brakes.

Alittle help here guys, These post make it seem that you could go either way. I'm just alittle confused at what I should get toghter and send out for machining. Thanks JR

No but really guys, can someone point me in the right direction. I think drum spindles are the way to go, maybe Lanner could throw in his 2 cents, or someone who has done this before.

I'm triing to fit 944 N/A brakes on to a balljoinnt front end.

Also can you reuse the bolts that hold the porsche hubs to the rotors, or should you get new ones?

Thanks JRI've got CB dropped disc spindles, but i'm running four pot brembo's. Does it not say anything on Lanners site about this?

I looked through Lanners site and did not find any info either way. I would think that dropped drum spindles are the way to go.

I would also assume that it's OK to reuse the hardware?

Any input would be great........JR

Hmmm, a couple of buck's for new bolts compared to my life... I would choose life! Those bolts get ALOT of heat cycles on them...

sure, don't use disc brake spindles they might be usable with the 4 pots, but definatly not with the non-turbo's

dropped spindles, might be do-able, but I never found a way

with the clearance issues I've had with my suspension, I've decided that the singlepots will be the best choice, with a custom suspension running coilovers.
