boblebaard,

What size is that spare tire ? Is it a Porsche spare ?

thanks

Sandeep

boblebaard
April 29th 2003, 16:30
Yes, it`s a Porsche magnesium spare tyre from a 993 Turbo.
I don`t remember the size, but I can check it if you want to.

Thanks for the reply.

I've got 993 Biturbo front brakes and need a spare tire to cover these.

What is the tire size and wheel width overall ?

I need to fit this in my '74 standards front spare tirewell.

thanks

I`ll take a look at it tomorrow, and see if I can find a part number as well.
It fits the spare tirewell with no problems, in fact there is enough space around the spare tyre to fit some extra luggage....
I hope to have the car ready in about four weeks from now if the parts I have ordered from Carbon Joe arrives in time.

I can also take some pictures to send you from some scandinavian VW shows if you want to!

Here`s some good Norwegian sites. (To see photos just click on "treff" or "bilder")

Please send us some pics from the Vw shows in your area ! If you can write a few paragraphs about your shows, send the pics and a small writeup (email is fine) to ssyan@digitalminds.ca and I will post it in the Car Shows section on the main page.

The spare wheel you can use with 993Turbo brakes has part#
965 362 03 000

It has been delivered with the following models:

928 / 964 / 968 / 993

Hope this could be helpful to find a used spare wheel, because buying a new from your local dealer will be very expensive!

Since I work for a local VW dealer I have the partnumbers for you... ;-)

fuel filling pipe, part# 171 201 129 F

boblebaard
December 3rd 2004, 20:03
They are original Audi/Porsche Cup fro a Audi RS2. The wheels are 7x17" ET55
The tyres are 205/40-17" front and 215/40-17" rear. I used original Porsche spacers, 21mm front and 35mm rear. The brakes are from Kerscher with Porsche bolt pattern and I have Kerscher adjustable struts in front.
The fit is very narrow, so you wouldnt get a pussyhair from a flie betveen the vings and the wheels... ;-)

Hello Baard. I’m a big fan of your car, which got me back into Beetles (and into SuperBeetles and the whole German Look), after a gap of around 10 years. I think your car epitomizes the German Look like no other.

I’ve taken the plunge and found myself a ’74 1303 which I intend to use primarily as a track car – though there’s no harm in looking good as well!

Could you give me a few more details on your car:

Is the DTM shifter still available, and do you have a link to where I might buy one? I can’t find anything on Google.

Likewise the Polo Racing seats; I can’t find a sales link – I could use another brand but yours are very cool with the VW Racing logo. Is access to the rear impossible with these seats fitted?

I’m also interested in your polished roll cage – is it a bolt-in, and where from?

Are the Audi / Porsche Cup wheels different to the regular Cup wheels? And did you have to go through a VW/Audi dealer for these? Don’t have a part number handy, do you?
Oh, and do you suffer clearance problems with these wheels? As I said, I want to use this car on the track, so wheels rubbing on the arches would be a no-no.

Did you manage to find a more discreet (hidden) exhaust system for use with the Type 1 engine?

Sorry for all the questions, but your car has set a benchmark for us all.

boblebaard
July 12th 2006, 06:30
Hi Bill!

Thank you very much for the nice words, and I`ll try to answer as good as I can. ;)

The Gear shifter is from Gerd Weisser in Germany. http://www.gwd-weiser.de/index2.htm

The Polo racing seats are the only pair that I know of that is delivered from VW Racing to a private customer. All the other seats were fitted in the Polo Super 1600 rally cars that VW Racing built for the junior world championship rally cars. VW Racing has changed the name and is now VW Motorsport again.

The roll cage is from Heigo. http://www.heigo.de Click on Überrollbügel

The wheels are from a Audi/Porsche RS2, and they are 7x17" ET55. I have used 21mm adapters in the front and 35mm adapters in the rear.
The adapters is from Porsche since i ordered the brakes from Kerscher with Porsche bolt pattern

http://www.kerscher-tuning.de

I guess you can get them from your local VW/Audi dealer.
The partnumber is: 8A0 601 025 P Z17
The wheels fit under the stock wings, but you will have to modify the arches a little bit to prevent them from touthing the arches.

I am planning a Type 4 engine for my car, and that engine will have another exhaust system. The 1914cc T1 engine will go into my next project, a 1954 T1 Cal-looker so I guess the exhaust wil be a bit more correct for that car. ;)

I hope this will help you, and welcome back into the VW scene again.
If you have any other questions I will try to answer as good as I can.

Many thanks for the quick reply Baard.

I had a quick look at the shifter on the GWD-Weiser site - wow, that's expensive! Worth it for the looks though, but what's the shift quality like? Good enough for occasional track work?

Still worried about the size of the 17" Cup wheels and the potential fouling on the arches. I had a '61 Jaguar recently which suffered from this and the steering wheel was pulled out of my hands on a fast bend - not nice! Do you still have problems with them? I'm tempted to go for a set of 6" & 7" x 16" Fuchs for track use as I've noticed some of the racers here (Jak in particular) using them without problems.

Any thoughts?

boblebaard
July 13th 2006, 03:24
Yes, the shifter is well worth the money. You get shorter shifts and it also comes a lot closer to the steering wheel.

Regarding the 17" wheels, I think I would have bought a set of 16" for track use. Tyres are cheaper, and you also have less weight in a 16" wheel.

Baard

Bill, I'm almost positive that Jak never used stock fuchs, he had some very nice split rim fuchs custom made. The 7x16" don't have much of an offset so will be quite wide, especially if you plan on using 944 brakes on the back..

Rich

Bill Tanner
July 13th 2006, 12:30
I'm a bit confused by this - I thought that fitting the 6x16" & 7x16" Fuchs was a fairly common thing on German Lookers.

I've checked back to Jak Rizzo's 'Porsche Killer' article and you're right, he did have a set of special split rims made up. However, there are two sets of wheels shown in the photos and the polished versions look like the standard wheels (apparently on 205/50/16 tyres front and rear).

I've just checked the wheel & tyre section of the forum and it seems there were different offsets available on the Fuchs - no idea what I'd need. At the moment my car is a bog-standard 1303S. I was planning to use the narrower diameter springs with adjustable struts (Kerscher or Topline) and lowering the car front and rear as much as I can get away with without rubbing. I'm also going to order one of their Porsche pattern disc brake kits. Not sure if I'll need spacers or not, but I definitely want everything to fit well under the standard arches. Don't mind going for a narrower tyre, perhaps a 195 or even a 185 if there are problems - just don't want to have the wheel's inside rim fouling on the suspension and don't want to have them sticking out too far.

Am I going to have problems with this set up? Any help would be much appreciated.

There has been some time now without any updates. (Renovating a house, and becoming a father has to take part of the reason...)

The GL 1303 will during this winter get a complete Porsche coling system with a carbon fibre fanhouse, and a set of 15" black powdercoated Porsche teledials for trackdays.

I have also started the process of restoring the 1954 oval for our newborn son. I`ll post some pictures soon.

Since the body is too damaged by rust, I will concentrate on getting the floorpan and drivetrain / brakes etc ready first.
Haven`t done much lately, but I have got a new engine for the car. ;)

When finnished, this engine will be looking like the stock 25HP, but deliver about 80HP.

All very nice cars, including the Touran! ;)

Where did you get the carbon fiber sheets for the fire wall?

Hi.

Bought it from www.gundersenmotorsport.no but I would guess that several companies selling parts for motorsport is able to get CF sheets.

Hi, Is the Heigo roll cage a bolt together kit like on their website or is it welded at every joint? How much did it run you?

This is bolted together, exept from the boxes that has to be welded underneath the dashboard and at the bottom of the B pillars.

It`s been quiet here for a while, but some minor changes has been done. Got myself a set of Porsche 7x15" Teledials with Toyo R888 tires for trackuse.
This weekend I attended scandinavias biggest car-event www.gatebil.no and had a blast! A feature on the car will come on www.speedhunters.com, and there is a picture of the car in this thread: http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/07/through-my-lens-the-land-of-eternal-sunshine/

Can't reach your profile / car feature on the main site anymore. It's been so long, didn't realize you were a member!

Just posted about your car last week: http://www.germanlook.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11663

Any chance you can give us some details & photos?

Yes, I saw it at our Gatebil event in Sweden, but I didn`t have the time to get a closer look at it. I think Speedhunters will feature it.

In September they might get to do this Norwegian bus and bug as well. :)

I know you're running the R888's, but what size are you running?

What's the width/offset on the Teledials?

Thanks!

They are 195/50 R 15" (not perfect for long straights, but on a short track they work just fine)
The wheels are 7x15" but I don't remember the offset.

Much appreciated. I figured you were using a 50-series tire. I'm currently running 205/60 and 195/60's on my bug, but with the rear tires almost bald I'm finding it impossible to get "fun" tires (read: sticky) in a 60 series 15". Might have to drop down to a 50 series.
