1971 1302s suspension what other options have i got??

hi my 02 currently has stock suspension (mac pherson struts)
with 2 inch lowering springs.

im looking to put modern alloys on my bug, but to do this i have to change the setup!!

now, over here in the uk i can only find info on one type of replacement which i havent got the cash to spend on, and i was wondering if theres anything else on the market which is cheaper???????????????????

Contact Topline here in the US.

They have their new MAXX struts (80mm) and let you lower your car up to 5". Plus they allow for up to 7" wide wheel under the fender (with the right offset of course).
They cost around $400.

or you could get their tapered springs which also allow wider wheels and dont cost near as much as the MAXX struts.

I got some stuff from Toplineparts.com ages ago, they are good to deal with. Take into account tax and import duty which you will have to pay on delivery. It doesn't always work out so cheap..

I can only recommend the Kerscher adjustable struts, which come with Koni adjustable inserts and 80mm Eibach single progressivley wound springs. The build quality and ride/handling are pretty amazing. My front wheels are 7.5*17et52mm under stock wings.

The man at GCC told me words to the effect: "Not too many American made parts get approved by the German TUV or even thier own SAE, and need to have 'for offroad use only' labels when being sold".

However, those struts do look very good and seem immensly popular over there. He may have been talking 'ollocks or it could be the case for some of the more strict US states. He was talking about struts.

It was the simplicity of the spring that put me off the Maxx, It may lower the car and allow fitment of bigger wheels but they don't look like perfomance developed product in my opinion. It's often true, that you get what you pay for.

I ordered through GCC, they were despatched from Germany and Kerscher billed me much much MUCH less than GCC's advertised prices.

Which was nice.

The original post states, "I know what's on the market but what is cheaper", so I think he is looking for a low cost solution and that would be the Topline Sport+ tapered spring (http://www.toplineparts.com/sportspring.html) and drilled drums thus in effect allow the fitment of the "modern alloys".

The main difference between the MaXX strut and the Kerscher is that the MaXX is adjustable in 1/2" slots and the Kerscher is fully adjustable. The strut is basically the same but as said the adjustability is the difference. The Kerschers are more adjustable but this would only be needed by a 'serious' racer that has to corner balance his car for the track. The MaXX are $300 less than Kerscher's strut plus the cost of overseas shipment, so it's all about cost effectiveness. The Kerscher has the advantage of the progessive spring and full adjustability that I would recommend for the track but on the street the MaXX do just fine.

I agree the tapered springs are, when all things considered, the best way to fit wider wheels/tyres to a superbug.

Possibly only available from Topline? I've never seen anything similar elsewhere...

sure you could go with wider wings, but you will probably have to run big spacers not to hit the springs.

i'll change the disks and drums to porsche pattern that should cater for spacers???
