Does anyone know of an LED swap for the stock VW speedo and VDO gauges. I love the look of my wife's new Jetta dash lighting. I have the stock Speedo, VDO 3 3/8 Tach, oil press, oil temp, volt, and 2 cyl. head temp gauges. Do the slip on diffuser bulb covers work well, or do they look cheezy?

Mine are the only ones I've ever seen in use. I got them way back in 1990 and had to mail order them. So long ago I don't remember where I got them.

No sorry I don't but to get a mental picture it's a little darker green than the watercooled VW's speedos.

Well in my quest for Blue back lighting I colored the lamps in my speedo blue with a blue layout Sharpie. the color was cool but they aren't bright enough now. I don't know if I have the 2 watt or 5 watt lamps.

I Bought a set of gauges from Mooneyes the gauges are made by autometer and they came with little rubber covers I put the green ones on and it looks cool a little darker than without but not so much that you cant read it. Go to any auto parts store that sells good gauges and they should be able to get you some.

Go to the local craft store and buy the glass paint. Lots of colors, normally used for the fake stained glass. Dip it and you're done.

On my old 1500 I wanted the blue back light look instrument lighting, so I did just as Superman has suggested, painted the bulbs with blue fingernail polish ;)
I got this from a $2 shop, so the cost was nothing, and it looked good, I remember the bulbs being a bit dim, but this may also have been that I didn't turn the dimming action on the light on/off switch up either.
Cheers

Another option is transparent model car paint, such as from Testors.

Does anyone know if the stock transporter gauges use the same bulbs as the 914's?

Hi
Years ago I bought some stuff from a speed shop called bulb dye, it was available in a few colours, but it did slightly dim the bulb output, not good when your getting on in years. Some paints may blacken with continued use.

Well i got rid of the bulbs and instead placed some blue leds, and for the gauge needle i placed a red led above the speedo. ended up looking like this

Pic is blurry since it was taken a while ago with an old cell phone, and it really doesn't reflect the look. if you like it i could take a better pic.
