Many questions: Are these wheels (Hartman 3-pc (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43957&item=2423842382)) worth almost a thosand bucks? Are they lightweight?
Wouldn't these look sweet on, say, a 1956 platinum grey GL Beetle with 996 brakes "hiding" behind them? Would they even fit? My setup (http://www.germanlook.com/Forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2455)
I appreciate any help.

I dont know if they are light, but they are definitely sweet!
I paid about that much for my Boxter wheels.

Me too. About 1K for Boxter wheels.
*** It might be easier to fit 7", rather than 7.5" in the front***

The answer to all your questions is YES.
Good deal for a 3 piece rim and they look stunning too.
They should fit too. the offset is high enough to play with spacers.

Thanks for the replies. And thanks for the reassurance Alex. I'm still wary of spending 1100 bucks w/ shipping to see if they will fit. Has anyone here ever bought and returned rims that didn't fit? I will find out what their policy is on these wheels, but I would like any other feedback too. It seems my favorite wheel choices keep getting wider and wider. Since these are three piece wheels, I;m thinking narrow sections could be available. Does anyone know about this?

I know you can get replacement lips for BBS. They aren't cheap. Not sure for those though.

On the front you can fit 7.5 X17/18 ET52.
At the rear 9x17/18 ET 47 will fit.
Both will need spacer. The front will need 15-21mm on a Standard bug and the rear needs about 1 27mm spacer with stock width brakes under stock fenders. You will have more Offset meaning that you need thicker spacers.
