my cal look was crushed last week by a hummer. (i sh*t you not.) i'm looking to start anew perhaps with a GL from a 69 sunroof i found.

i'd very much like to use some of the 5-lug wheels fitted on modern VWs. Car will be ball joint front end, CB drop spindles, VW trailing arms, CB discs all around. I'd like to stay away from spacers if possible (I autocross so i'm a bit concerned about increasing the unspring weight).

are spacers an necessity with water pumper wheels because of the castellated nuts? are stock fenders out of the question? any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

thanks,
gcorrado

First, welcome!

Second, spacers are not necessary. Brina (Phat73vw) runs 17x7 et 40 wheels with stock fenders. Granted, he has a Super Beetle, but it is totally possible.

Now, I'm ne expert in the standard front end, so I'll let someone else get into the nitty-gritty, narrowing etc. Although you probably won't have to narrow. Then again, I'm no expert :)

perhaps i should be a bit more specific.

i'd like to fit vw's rave alloys 16x6.5 et 42 on my 69. i would be willing to spend money on ccc wide fenders if needbe. i'm not to excited about the possibility of spacers however. in reading the searches i heard mention of the castle nuts on the rear being a problem. is this still the case with cb rear discs drilled for 5x100?

you should be ok with no spacers with anything from et40 to et45

if you replace the rears with discs, you shouldnt have a problem with the crowns either.
