View Full Version : Who can get us Kafer Cup racing videos?

DORIGTT
November 4th 2003, 21:56
I would like to know where we can get Kafer Cup racing on video or other VW racing (not drag necessarily).

I would like to see how our cars actually do in the hands of 'trained professionals' for entertainment and educational benefits.

Soooo, c'mon you people in Europe!!! Fix us up!!

Thanks in advance.

I've got a cable modem on my computer so I'm not too concerned about downloading large files like that. I'd just like them to be on VHS or DVD so I can spread the gospel of the power and allure of the 'modern' aircooled VW's with people who may not have fast modems for downloading and out in my garage when I'm working on my toys.:D

I have seen various sites like VW Speed and the one French website that links to Kafer Cup car racing...just no long (meaning a full length 2 hour video) videos.

Who hosts the races? I would imagine some budding cameramen and producers who enjoy VW's and motorsports would be excited about the possibility of sharing such exciting footage as well as make a few bucks in the process.

I'd pay the $30-$40 bucks or so per tape to own those videos.

So, talk to your friends...(I have none because I sell New VWs and drive old VW's here in the Motor City (Metro Detroit area) and see if they know anyone who has exposure to the races.

Thanks in advance.

Klaus Morhammer did. I did find an old tel. number from him (from '99?) : +49 898500464 but I'am not sure that still works.
He still writes for VW Speed occasionally.

It might just be that there have never been a semi-professional video shot of those races...

Hello,

I seem to remember that there were some old Käfercup:( video's around.
One in particular was showing a race during an (also old) DTM raceweekend. It also showed the Z-series bug with the 16v watercooled boxer.
Sadly I don't have that video but I'll ask a friend who has, where he purchased it.
I'll let you know.

Cheers,
Richard

I spoke with Klaus Morhammer a couple of years back and he was trying to put some of the videos together for me, but then he disappeared. :( Anyone out there have any contact with him? We need to get these videos over here so I can put them together on DVD

Hello,

Well I was mistaken about the Käfercupvideo but he does have a video featuring the French series. But I don't think they are still available.

Klaus Morhammer is editor/contributor with a German magazine VW-Speed nowadays (oops, should have looked at Wally's reply :o )and is no longer organizing the Käfercup, as far as I know.

There is though, still a kind of Käfercup active in Germany, but it isn't as well-known as the original series. I think it's more a local series in southern Germany (Bavaria) and Austria. But maybe one of our German members can chime in?

Cheers,
Richard

The European PAL format VHS tapes will not work in an American NTSC VCR/Player. The best thing, and easiest for all, is to have Alex convert it.

Why not make a copy of the original and send the copy to the USA. Thats a one way trip. Saves 14 euros on return shipping.

as long as it is done realtime as a minimum. quality loss is quick on tape. kind of like the movie multiplicity.

SuperRSi
February 12th 2004, 01:56
Almost any pro video can convert PAL to NTSC, and the cost is usually not that much. The real question is why not pay to convert it at the Euro end and then just send over the NTSC and we can have our way with it. Less than $20.00 for shipping and probably less than $50. to convert over there. I also can convert the video here in Texas if desired. I would be willing to pay for shipping and conversion if done here or there. The only thing to ask now is are we violating the original copyright and should we be paying some royalties on the rights to duplicate the video? After all the man did spend the time and money to make the original. Count me in on a copy either way.

Thanks,

Randy

count me in. i didn't see resolution to the copyright issue. being a musician (somewhat of ex-musician as of a few months ago), i am a little biased in this area. it is only right that the copyright owner be aware and asked for approval and paid royalties. they are the ones that risked their dollars and sweat equity to get the thing made in the first place.

best way to handle is look at the packaging. the copyright owner must be listed. let me know if tracking down contact info is needed and i would be happy to help.

once contacted, they can either point out the proper way to purchase the video or if they are small time may even permit copying. the collection of royalties is the sticky part. they would have nothing but trust to rely on and that is why you don't see this happening much.

one bootlegging approach i have seen is the bottlegger makes, distributes and sells copies. they hold royalties in escrow for the artist to claim and even notate that info on the packaging. honest bootlegging...who'd da figured.

the other side of this is don't say a word, but don't charge anything but cost. still illegal, but at least it shows you are not tying to make a profit.

i have little morals though so either way count me in.

Okay....here is the deal.

I have the video and it is already converted to NTSC. I called Klaus Mohrhammer (SP?) to ask about copying it and putting it on the site.

He will have to research this because the material is owned by anther company that civered the DTM race series that time. The Kaefer Cup was running as a pre race for 3 times with the DTM.

I will call him at the end of next week to see what he can tell me.
He will also get me the contact info for Dr Gerold so maybe I can get some pics and info on his Divinol Racer.

Just to be the devil's advocate here, I'm guessing the original recording was more to record history than to make a ton of money. Second, this was apparently the ONLY official copy of the tape, so nobody has done ANYTHING with this tape for 10 YEARS! There must be some sort of statute of limitations for this whole thing. Finally, we are not talking about some sort of mass production, we are talking about limited production for private viewing. GL VW bugs are not nearly as popular as we would like to think. We are talking about niche car racing. I'm sure not even the guys in the races were contacted about being videotaped originally, but again, not a big deal. I think it would be great to see an old clip. Just my 2 cents.

I would think you have done due diligence in contacting those involved. If your reason for duplication and distribution is driven by the desire to preserve the historical medium and not to make any profit, it probably is not a legal case anyone would look twice at anyway. Piracy issues are pursued because the pirate is profiting from the duplication. I agree this is not something that anyone would presume has a wide market and therefore you are not diluting the future profitabilty of the films. It also is not inexpensive to pursue the piracy issue in court and in this case would certainly not be worth it by the original author. So I would say as long as the duplication was a labor of love, then no issues. How many people want copies 10-20? Even at a retail sales price of $50. for a tape/DVD the original author would make a whopping $450 to $900! Trust me you cannot talk to an attorney here without first giving him a retainer of $1-2,000. so the author would start out losing a grand.

Only my opinion...

Thanks,

Randy

If you've tried to contact them to no avail, then I think you've done your duty. If you are copying these for the cost of materials and time and not for"profit" then I doubt there will be an issue. I've been trying for 10 years to get material like this from over there from folks like Klaus Morhammer. The material is just not available. Please help those of us out that are dedicated to this style of tuning and let us have this bit of our history as a point of reference. :) :agree:

Maybe Alex could send them to me so I can view and make a copy to preserve the media for future generations. An archive of sorts...

Perhaps we should archive them in at least thirty locations around the world to hedge against natural disasters...

This would not be done for profit or resale.

The Käfer-Cup was organized by Klaus Moorhammer and Hubert Hottinger. Hubert Hottinger sells part time (?) Porsche Parts, this year I saw him at the Bitburg Racetrack (DAS Drag Day).
Some Käfer Cup cars now race at the Divinol Cup (Race Series), I remember the Raschig team, Dirk Torwesten... Other race in their spare time 4-6 times a year at the DSK (Deutscher Sportfahrer Kreis = German Sportsdriver Community) "freies fahren" (Free driving) at the Hockenheimring, Nürburgring Grand Prix Race Track or the Nordschleife. The event "freies fahren" is for private drivers, everybody can attend and show his/her skills... This year I saw 2 bugs and 1 VW Bus with 993 engine driving.

Maybe the German company "MPS-Medien Post Shop, 45678 Herten" sells Käfer-Cup Videos, BUT I don't know if this company still exists. They advertised in a magazine called "VW Scene".

At May 1st, there will be the "Maikäfer Treffen", with about 1000 cars, a really big swap meet, many dealers (GWD, Knuf, CSP) and the VW Speed, VW Scene & WOB magazine - may be I find there videos or meet Klaus Moorhammer, Hubert Hottinger or someone of the German VW press...

I have a video where three T3 VW busses with Porsche engines (993, 996) race against each other at the Hockenheimring, but it is 370 MB Mpeg big...

Yes, you heard it right! The Porsche busses are really fast up to 230km/h and sometimes even more. Last year I had the opportunity to drive the silver one on the pictures attached on the autobahn (motorway?), you have to concentrate very much. You are from the UK right? Maybe you have seen us at the Volkworld Show 2002, where we were invited by Ian McCuttcheon. On the way back to Germany, my friend got a speeding ticket in Belgium, he drove 100km/h more than allowed :(
I could burn the video on CD and send it to you, but may be someone have got the time and know how to put this video on this web site, I also have a lot of pictures from some european VW shows...

I also scanned an old article from 1992 which was printed in a magazine called VW Scene...

There is a connection to Claer: The silver one was build by Heinz Heymann, he is owner of a body shop and does the paintwork on the Claer busses. They know each other well. The white bus from Switzerland, I`ve forgotten the name of the owner, is completely build without the help of Claer, but it was a former Oettinger WBX6 3,6 I think the owner runs a VW dealership. The red camper was build by the owner himself, a pilot at Lufthansa, but at the Claer's workshop.
I think, but I don't really know, the camper has got the 996 Tiptronic, maybe the swiss one too, but I never drove with them. In summer I might see them again, then I will ask and if you want, I do some detail pictures.
CD is no problem, inside Europe I can afford the price for postage, just send me your address.

-zen
If you like I can send you a CD, better DVD, with the Mpeg Movie and lots of pictures from European and German car shows, you can use it for the gallery. I think I've got some more very short movies which I've taken with my photocamera. Maybe you can shorten the movies to make them downloadable. Just write me a mail with your address.

-cs01_510
The easiest way, I think, would be to put the little movie on a web page. If zen likes my idea of sending him a CD/DVD he might put it on the germanlook.com page. ´

I have had alook online for some more Claer buses, WOW his latest creations Clear CT/4 993 (http://www.autobild.de/test/neuwagen/artikel.php?artikel_id=3255&artikel_seite=0&A_SESS=074e7e7b2150ae7642bc9a1bd9a7eea4) is unbleavable & probably THE ULTIMATE GERMAN LOOKER the world has ever seen.

I want one, now wheres that loto ticket

p.s. the page is in Dutch and can be translated HERE (http://world.altavista.com/tr)

Hi!

If it is the same bus we are talking about, then it is R.I.P! The first built T4 with rear Porsche engine crashed and rolled over... I don't know whether it is repaired or a new one was build.
A friend of mine told me that there is another bus being build: A T4 crewcab with VW Phaeton V10TDI with the engine in the middle (Sorry I don't know the exact english word, but the engine is placed between the front and the rear axle). I don't know if it is Claer, but someone in this area. What I have heard is, that they having the problem finding a gearbox that is strong enough for the torque of nearly 1000Nm... I wished I had such problems and the money of course :D
Today, I will visit the post office, maybe have something to watch at the end of the week... :)

The English is ... mid-engined, just like a Porsche Boxter.

I have a video where three T3 VW busses with Porsche engines (993, 996) race against each other at the Hockenheimring, but it is 370 MB Mpeg big...

I friend of mine has this on DVD, its pretty cool.. He actually went to Hockenhiem to see them...

Does your friend went to Hockenheim with a dark blue T3? We talked to two guys from England. There is a 2nd video which was filmed out of the red camper with videocamera, but it was even bigger than mine!

Bit OT, but on www.luftboxers.com are - at the bottom on the link page - a few video's with one of the former Kaefer Cup cars (amongst them Kurt Hassmann's car) doing a 240 km/h pass at a Austrian circuit.
Very cool.

just put them up there. unfortunately it is not a trivial task to format pics to the right size and get them posted...much less finding any spare time. :D

These may be of interest if your into circuit racing.

From the Big Boys Toys Beetle Cup in the UK, cars were only 1641cc not the fastest but excellent racing.

Think i'm in there some where.

Hello friends,

you're asking for videos from Käfer-Cup (the race-series has become a new name: boxerpokal) ?
Her they are (sorry page is only in german):

Boxerpokal-Page (http://www.boxerpokal.de)

look for
'Bilder/Videos' /Videos von den Rennen for Videos;
'Bilder/Videos' /Bilder Saison 2005 for Pictures;
or in The Archive /Saison 2004/Bilder/Videos.

Enjoy them.

Hello Frank,

I saw it before :D ; you guys have a very cool site (although the music is very ennoying :p ) and very inspiring race-cup!
Thanks for sharing!

Does one of the participants still drive an 'old' Overfly engine from Holzapfel? I would love to see one up close someday.

Herzlichen Grüss,
Walter

Hi Walter,

Thomas Wöhr has a 2.9l Holzapfel engine in his white 1303 Superbeetle.

See his white bug Nr. 493 on www.boxerpokal.de at 'Bilder Saison 2005 /Bergrennen Schleiz/'
or in season 2004 in Monza
