In '74 VW changed the steering shaft from the large splined to the narrow splined. Now what does all this mean, you ask? Simple if you want a Porsche steering wheel in your Supa and it's a '73 or earlier then you have two options, 1) drill out the rivets in the hubs of both a Porsche wheel and a stock '73 earlier wheel and swap hubs(when I did it the wheel was never centered properly), or 2) install a '74 1303's steering shaft, and then simply bolt a Porsche, or '74 on steering wheel on and your done. The horn and blinker turn off will work normal as well. I was going to write a tech article but the procedure is very simple.
You'll have to use a '74 only steering shaft because in '75 VW went to rack and pinnion.

Yep, I swapped the shaft in my car and then went with another wheel so I swapped it back to the original shaft. So i have a 74 shaft for a Super(ior) if anyone needs one.

The early Porsche 911, up to around 1985 has the same spline as the early Super and the later Super has the same spline size as the water-cooled VW. Also, take note that the change over in the 1974 shaft was done mid year production.

Is the early '03 upper shaft the same as that of an '02?
