View Full Version : What sort of rear shocks?

Can anyone put me in the right direction with regaurds to rear shocks for my 1303.I have fitted adjustable swayaways to the rear,but am a bit concerned about the rear arches catching when someone is sitting in the back.By the way the rear arches are not stock but are from a kit.I also forgot to mention I have Minilite Supersports 7 x 14 rims shoed with 235x60x14 on the rear.
The tires used to catch when I had the stock 1600 engine in it,but now there is even more weight in the rear because of the type 4 2.4L plus Porsche 901 box in the rear.
So my question is what do you recommend in the way of adjustable coil shocks for the rear.If this is possible is there any clearance difficulties with the A arm around the bottom shock mount.
Any suggestions on the way to go? or makes of shock that can get me over this problem

I'd like to see a pic of your ride with minilites. I bought some koni yellow adjustables from a 85 944. Not coilovers, but worth it.

Try some stiffer rear torsion bars. I think the stock ones are 22mm, try some porsche 944 torsion bars. They are a direct replacement but they are thicker than your VW ones. you get probably find a set on ebay for $40 to $60 USD. I have a set of I think 25mm ones and the rear of my car is very stiff. Although I haven't driven it yet. :)

How hard will the ride be if I where to replace the torsion bars?I don't want to be in the state where the back end of the car starts to bounch around the road, due the back end being to ridgid.
So will coil over shocks not be a better option so they can be adjusted to suit easier than the torsion bars and adjustable spring plates.
Thanks for your replies and will give it some thought to which way to go

Not sure how hard the ride will be as my car is still sitting on stands.

Coilovers are the choice with the most adjustability with the least amount of work.

To keep your car from bouncing you might want to install stiffer rear shocks with the stiffer rear torsion bars.
