Hey guys I have decided to start work on a 3d model of my bug. I am going to be using it to work out some ideas i have for my real project. This will give me a cheap way ie free way, to work out some of the crazer ideas i have. I will be posting pics and animations of the model as it comes along. I may from time to time ask you guys if it looks right.

to start with i used a blueprint i found on the net for referance then had to decide where to start so i started on the front fender on the passengers side.

I have a short animation to show you what the outline looks like you can start to see the fender taking shape.

I will upload that file soon. I would like a bit of feed back are you guys interested in watching the progress of a 3d model being built?

starmember where did you get that model? I looked around for one on the net but the only good looking ones were for sale at a very high price. Did you model that?

I did not completely model it I remodel it. I wanted to build a little game but I did not have the time to finish it. I also have a karmangia. The picture is an old picture.

Hey star could you send me the 3d model you have of that bug? This could save me a lot of time. I have some ideas i am trying to work out with my hood to extract the heat from the rads I am still working on my model but if i had one that was mostly complete it would save me a ton of time.

Thanks

slow progress finaly got the outline of the hood done. now i will start on the inside part of the hood. You model the car only one half at a time then copy it and flip it sence cars are mirrored. here is what the outline looks like so far.

hey Vincent how did you make the out lines? what program are you using?

beetle1303,

Vincent

I am using 3d studio Max I am modeling the car you have to do it one vertex at a time the way i am doing it so you line up the side view and draw a line then you move the vertex's to line up in the front and top view when you are done you have a 3d line of the shape. the next part for the hood will be to make the indent on the hood then to make a mesh that will define the 3d surface. I will post a pic when i get that part done.

I can offer assistance too should you care for any. I work with Max 6 w/ Brazil, as well as several variations of the AutoCad platform, photoshp etc. I do architectural visualizations for a living, so if you'd like any help let me know....................i was planning on building a bug model for planning reasons as well, just have never got around to it. Maybe we could share some modeling work - basically cut eachothers workload in half. What are you planning on modelling beyond the basic stock vw setup?

That would be great to work with you. I have done up some photoshoped versions of what i am looking to do with the body. you can find them under paint and body.

Hey Vincent,

Where did you get the bp drawings from, I can only seem to find ones for the new beetle.
What units are you working with, and also.....when you get beyond the spline cage, are you going to use editable poly, mesh, etc.?

i would love to pull a gallery section together of this type of work as you guys get to results. i will even consider a download section for others to leverage the raw 3D wireframe files. any other ideas in this area? i would love to see this blossom as a useable tool for all. i know just using photoshop techniques helped me greatly in making design choices on my car.

I think thats a great idea man! I could use something like that for my 72! i think it would help out a ton!

I would also like to get my hands on a Fridolin, what a crazy GL that would make, are they even GL worthy! O well I think they look crazy man

You bet they are, I think the Frid has something about it that makes it...... the only word I can think of is beautiful :o

Just imagine a twin turbo 996 powered Frid sat on a set of GT3 wheels, ceramic brakes :D

As you all may have seen I'm quite handy w/ photoshop...
I also happen to know 3ds max and currently working on a 1303 on Maya.
Gotta say...I just eyeball the stuff but it's comin along.

It'd be sweet to be able to have access to these as references!

I got the idea after messing w/ bug selecta and thought, "Man, it'd be great if I had a full 3d model to test out my ideas on!

If we get enough materials together....maybe we can make a GL 3d "selecta" of our own and stick it in flash so we can do all that crazy rotate and modify stuff
that the modern car manufacturer websites have!

just my 2cents! =P

A purley selfish request ;) if it were possible it would be great if someone could do a 3D version of an early baywindow bus.
I would try and do it myself but I have enough problems with paint, the thought of a cad system frightens the life out of me

Actually the thing im trying to do is a 935 K3 replica, more of a lookalike i would say...

Three good reasons:

1 better aerodynamics
2 different
3 I believe its one of the sexiest lines for a Porsche/beetle

I started on a 1303 in 3DS Max a few weeks ago, but my skill in the software is pretty basic right now.... I am going to keep attempting it in the near future.....

I have the physics model for a 4WD Beetle for Richard Burns Rally working here on my computer. Makes a change sometimes from the Subaru's extreme understeery characteristics, and it's noticeably more better balanced & poised when pushed hard into corners. Definitely more fun to drive.

Only problem is that I gave up trying to make the 3D model for it on Z-modeler

In any case somebody already made a 3D 1303S for the Rally Trophy computer sim on PC.
With z-modeler (or Max) you can manipulate that model to look however you wish (obviously). Huge whaletail took a few hours to morph.
Only problem with the model is the guy who made it wont let you do what you want with it. As far as he's concerned the model is his intellectual property, so i can't even post pictures here of it here. Or use it for my Beetle in Richard Burns Rally

But here's a link to the original car in action

http://www.no-grip.net/filedisplay.php?filenr=47&imageid=5

There was a video of this 1303 on the Nurbergring but I cant find it anymore.
