I think i'm going to go with a 091 tranny, since alot of people have pointed out the fact that it can take a beating and come back for more. How involved is installing an 091 into a standard 70 beetle? The most that i've heard is that you have to widen the tunnel where the shift cable goes, because the little dildo (can't think of a better word) at the end of the tranny that points to the front of the car is bigger on the 091 than on the stock type 1 trans.

Any more info would be great!!
Thanx

I think you have to change the clutch cable/arm to push instead of pull as on the beetle (maybe flip it over? not sure) Also you have to use the porsche lever so there is a bit of cutting and fabbing up of the trans tunnel and a bit of banging of the frame horns to get it in, oh and if you happen to live in the UK like me you also need to convert it to IRS. have a look at the how to articles.

Also you have to use the porsche lever

you can use the bugs lever. you only need a special spacer.

There's some confusion here, 091 is a type 2 bus transmission, 901 is an early Porsche 911 transmission. Which one did you mean? Both can be made to fit...

I was looking at a 901 conversion, just don't fancy cutting up the tunnel for the Porsche shifter.

Any help?

Is that a new thing? I was looking at doing this swap a while back and all the info said you would have to fit the porsche lever. This was one of the things apart from the irs bit that put me off. now I might reconsider!!......

now if you use the spacer you dont have to mod. the tunnel or install a porsche shifter sorry for the confusion. :(

What about joining the vw shift rod to the porsche or is there something that can go in between? Getting interested again now cos I found out the other day that the irs swap is not the nightmare it seems also.
