Can anyone recommend a good electric sander? Something that will conform well the the curves of the beetle body.

medium density pad and your arm is the best one out there. the beetle curves are pretty tough to get anything else to conform to.

there is an italian power tool manf called fellisatti (mis spelt maybe) that does a really good random orbit dual action sander. use a soft interface pad between it and the sanding disc. i used one on my ghia resto.

I would agree....although you can use an orbital on the broader surfaces where there are no nooks and crannies.
All my sanding is done by hand with flexible sanding blocks! :D
