Hi guys...

I'm here now for a small time but never really introduced myself, so here I go;

I'm Wiebrand Bunt an 21 year student from Holland. I'm now for almost 2,5 years busy on my car. It's in full resto and still lays apart till the last bolt.
My car is a 1303 S with an original 1600 engine.
In the 2,5 years till now all the rust of the car is gone and is replaced with imitation or self-made platework. There are Remmele-look airintakes in the sides of the car. There are boxes welded on the back for mounting an aluminium highwing. There will be no interior except of 2 seats, an dash, and AN ROLL CAGE!!

And about that rollcage I want to show you some pics of the progress of it.

At first I picked up the 6 meter lengths of tube.

So another update...

This afternoon I finally was free form school so I could work on my car.. Lot's of the prepwork was done on sundayafternoon (in an cold garage -> the heater was dead)

At first we welded up the right box on the rear wheelarce.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/24012005221434.jpg

At the other side an backplate was welded in.. An yet another piece of foam was burned out
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/24012005221714.jpg
The sideplate of this boxe is also made right and will be welded in tomorrow

Also we welded the tubes from a-to b-pilar on there "footplates"
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/24012005222916.jpg

Also the left side is welded on the "footplates"
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/24012005223036.jpg

And the last thing that we did today was beginning at the making of our strutbrace. On every plate will be attached 3 tubes (if everything goes as planned)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/24012005223122.jpg

I hope ya like it!!

Your making it look so easy! Yeah look easy...but I can tell it's not  The real making is quite simple... But the thinking of where you want to put that, what is the point when I make that there, which form, how should I make that.. that cost a lot of thinking and time..

But hell yeah.. in dutch: Met gezond verstand kom je een heel eind! (With healthy thinking you come an hole end)

Hey mates.. It's been an long time but here's an other update.

At first we had drawn where the tubes will go trough the "dashboardmetal" and cut that out.

At this point I was lucky that I already had removed the "freshairbox" that is hanging in the boot under the frontwindow because otherwise the cage couldn't be coupled to the frontstruts.

I also was obliged to remove the trunkhangs (do you call them so??). Tja The cage didn't fitted otherwise so hell yeah than the hangs has to get lost

Racelook
February 1st 2005, 17:58
I use 42,4mm diameter tube with an thickness of 3,25mm. The tubes are "offglowed" after the bending/mold proces in the fabric so that there are no stressreflexes left in the tube. (I hope that you understand what I'm telling in my bad english)

I know what you mean but I was thinking about the pump nozzels with the benzen (sp?) extractors(I think that's what there called), they have to fit all the way in the filler neck before dispensing the fuel.

I hope I'm wrong :(

So as you can see that the bracket is not ready welded on the plate. And also there is a little bend in the tube so that it clears the tankinlet and that it don't stuck to the sidepanel (the sidepanel goes some to the innerside as you go to the front).

Yep you have to think of everything, but that the nice thing of it.

Mwhaa Ben.
There's only an verry little update of the cage. The "fixingtubes" are widered (uitgedraaid in het nederlands) for the right diameter and are drilled so that the several pieces of the cage can be bolted together at the end.

The next update will be over a couple of weeks I'm afraid because I'm now verry busy with the chassis (new fuellines 2*12mm and new brakelines). When I've fixed that I will paint the chassis and the cage at the same time.

So the cage weight about 68 a 70 kg thats heavy. BUT IT IS SO COOL. I am planning to build one out of aluminium.

Your correct. The tube weights 3,09 kilogram the meter. So the total weight of the cage stays at the weight of an heavy child.
But hell yeah you've got to have left something for your safety.

Please do research.. I know that aluminium is not allowed on some ways of racing.

Lot's of suc6

sorry, an unrelated question...

The side vents that you intend on fitting, are they home made by you or did you purchase them from an on-line supplier?

I've buyed them from www.frankys.nl or www.kevertuning.nl (there 10km away from me). I think they also ship to foreign countries.

They are kind of look-a-like Remelle air-scoops

how much paid you for the meter of Cr-Mo?
e which the diameter of the used pipes?
which the used weld? TIG? MIG?
here in Brazil this material little is used, in the truth we is that we do not use in street cars, therefore the price is high.

I didn't use chroommolybdeen because there's almost not to get here in Holland. For what I understand from several Americans it is much easier to get in America.

The tubes have an diamtere of 42,4mm and an thicknes of 3,25mm.
All the welds are MIG-welds.

Has anyone heard of these guys, http://autoweldchassis.com/rbc.ivnu. They have a full funny style 14 point cage for supers and Std. beetles. Really cheap prices. 12 point for 299.95

I don't have.

But I find it to cheap to be good (just speculating). I want to see an installed one before I even should think of buying that one.

Ok, i'll let you take a look at mine once it's installed, I just bought the 12 point version with the "M" style door bars so its a little easier for the girls to get into ;) (I'll have my girlfriend until she realizes how much money I'm putting into this thing [i've hidden my 14'' rotors and 6 pot calipers for too long, I want to show everybody i know!]).

AutoWeld said it would be done in a week to my specs. $518 shipped with the extra options. ($299 for the cage, $50 for the bent door bars, 150 shipped, and tax)

Whats cool about them is that they have an optional hinged door bar that "swings" out by pulling a pin so its really easy to jump in (good for all you guys with wives).

Wish me luck

 If only my girlfriend knew how much I've spent already. And how much I have left to buy!

That doesn't sound like a bad price, but I'd like to see it too before I would want to take the plunge.

Goodluck...

For sure let us see how it turns out, im interested in buying one of there 10 points if the quality and fitment is good. Would sure be easier then bending your own tube if all is well.

I cancelled the order which sucks, i'm ordering a 993 rear end first thing tomorrow morning, once i get that i'll order the cage in 2 weeks. 518 shipped isn't bad for a 12 point cage with all of the options.

I'm trying to decide whether i should make my own or order one. 518 shipped.

How much would you say you spent on the materials not including your tools?

I think around 500 Euro.

If it was an welded one it would be almost the half less.

Wiebrand (p.s. I can't convince you for an Heigo ;) ?? hahaha)

Good luck
