I'm to the point where I need to get a trans for my project, and I'm not sure if the 915 will be strong enough.

Engine will be 300-400 hp turbo 2275(depending on max boost I can get out of it) Car will be full weight, and I want to be able to drive from OR down to Sacramento and dragrace and make it back.

Will I need to go G50 or will a 915 box be ok in an abused application?

Just my opinion, maybe 930 (four speed) is more suited for your application, can handle massive amounts of torque, and is a lot shorter than the 5-speeds as well, just a thought..

Cheers,

Good point about the length...

This car is going to be driven daily, so I kinda want a 5spd. I'm not worried about cutting into the torsion housing to make it fit.

Then the G50 would be my choice, it will allow much faster shifting, but it is big though.. more expensive, hard to find, it is very popular among Porsche owners as well. Another good candidate would be a 923 transmission out of a '75/'76 912E .. that comes with the correct throwout arm etc ..

Is the 923 a 4 or 5spd?

The 923 is in fact a 5-speed 915 which is adapted for use with the Type4 engine of the 912E

the problem is tha the 915 gearbox is more heavy than the original gearbox, and the G50 is more heavy than the 915....

Then again, if your engine is so strong that it will break a certain model gearbox, the extra weight of a stronger one might be the only logical choise...

Engine is similar to turbobug56's (blue choptop) setup on shoptalk, and he puts out 450hp at the wheels on race gas. Iv'e decided I'm definitely going at least a 5spd g50..........

Please let the ebay awd 6spd stay in my price range
