That's right. The title of this thread is the same as the title of a tech article by NO_H2O.

I came here today to lurk and learn, and what do I see? The above mentioned tech article.

Now, your humble servant, Capt. Technoklutz, is in a panic-induced cold sweat.

Y'see, your dear captain is meeting with a mechanic from the shop he's been frequenting the past 17 or so years next weekend to install some MaXX struts (and other stuff) on his '71 Super. (Okay, I will stop referring to myself in the third person.)

Do I need such a tool? Will my shop -- not my like I own it -- have a proper tool for the install, or are they likely to have what you shouldn't use?

What should I do?

(At this time, I have not been able to contact the mechanic. He has yet to see the MaXX strut in person; only the installation literature.)

If you are going to be at a shop with a strut comp. tool you will be able to do it with that. When I first put mine on the shop I went to put the strut together in the middle setting. I needed to put it at the highest setting, rather than take the struts back out and go back to the shop again to change the setting, I made the tool so I could make changes to them without removing the struts. If I were you I would have the shop set them(MaxxStuts) at the highest setting. This will give you a 2 1/2 inch drop and then drive it and see how much it settles. If yours was like mine it will be just right at the top notch.

Excellent. That was what I was hoping to read. Your feelings about the first setting is the same as mine. We'll see soon enough. Thanks!
