So after an "vacation" (worked 40-45 hours a week) and after some time spend in France I got going on the car again monday and yesterday.

It's now on his own (rear)tires.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/37716.jpg

And so is how the pedals, handbrake, etc. looks like.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/37715.jpg

Now the welding on the body can go further (yesssssssss still more to weld :twisted: ) and finally bodywork can begin.

Wiebrand,

Some nice progress on your car. Wish I could make progress as quick as you can. At the moment there is just way too much stuff that keeps me away from my car!:bawling: :mad:

Anyway, I meant to ask about that ebrake of yours. Now that you have gone hydraulic with it, why do you still need the cables?(or am I just being REALY daft here!?):confused: :laugh:

@ajsyrup;
Here's an link of the picturealbum with all the pictures I got from the handbrake. It's al welded together by ourself. And I use an 22mm HRC for it. If I make it the next time and have more money to spend I would use an smaller HRC that is maked for use on hydraulic handbrakes (needs less room then this one).

@Lurv;
There are verry verry much hours in it, don't know how much. But I worked on it for more then 4 years now. (I work on it almost every sunday (an half day) and 1 evening every week)

I still think it's going verry slow, but I don have so much time for it. :( Otherwise I was much further after 4 years, but yeah.

Anyway, I meant to ask about that ebrake of yours. Now that you have gone hydraulic with it, why do you still need the cables?(or am I just being REALY daft here!?):confused: :laugh: I need the cables for the yearly OT here in Holland. The handbrake have to be an undepended, lose system.

Is more for cutting and turning brake "corners" in the future (maybe some histo-rallys), but it can also be used as daily e-brake.

another stupid question i just thought for safety purposes an e brake should be cable driven not hydraulic just curious cause i am in the progress of my brake setup and i tell would be hell of a lot easier to do hydraulics then cables just curious

thanks for answering all the stupid questions :D

Racelook
September 18th 2006, 18:09
No thanks mate..

See my answer on 24 augustus. For safety and OT the e-brakes have to be seperatly and not dependent of each other. Mine are not seperatly, so that's why I have to use the cables ones a year. For only e-brake use it doesn't matter if it is hydraulic or cable. Cable is much easier.

So there some update again.

The sparetire-platework and the strenghtening bar is in. Also checkes several previous weldings (some cut out and welded in again). I also started with welding close almost every hole in the dashboard-platework.
The backplate (where the exhaust goes through)didn't fit quite good, so had to hammer verry much, but now it finally fits good.

I have some pics of it and will post it soon.

After a lot of days with short time, I finally had some time last sunday to work on my car.

We started with making an airscoop for the enginelid. TO first have an cleaned lid, we welded some holes closed, and cut out al the represt pieces, maked some new plates and welded them in. After that the hammering begun to make the sides of the airscoop. They're both finished and one already welded on the lid=> see the pictures.

Had it verry verry bussy with school, so there was no time for my car. BUT this last weekend I finally worked at it.

Much grinding and welding and again changed my minds about some things. AT first welded some holes close in the pillars, channels and dashboard) (there's only an couple of meters left to do :eek: ).
Some pic of closed holes;
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/thumbs/42611.jpg (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/42611.jpg)
After that I also maked the choiche to ditch the 911-look dashboard (what I picked up two or three years ago for much money and long riding).
I'm now sticking with the original dashboard, only not as boring as the standard one (this is the nude starting).
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/thumbs/42612.jpg (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/42612.jpg)
Unfortunally this also means that I have to buy new gauges at this point .

And we also got further with the airscoop in the rearlid, we ordered some small stuff and by checking the fitting of the hoodlid it seems that there's something realy not straight :mad: . But we keep the welder warm and have the grinders ready to make it nice again.

Why stick to the stock dash? its abit of an ugly thing to me... if you already had the 911dash aswell?
I don't stick with the stock one, but use it as an basepanel for my custom dashboard. The 911-style dash, had an too bad shape that doesn't follow the windowrounding verry good. And it was too small. But the meanreason why I kicked it overboard is that I found the tellerhousing too wide. The tellers are almost over 60% off the dash. And that's too wide and ugly for this small bug.

I had it verry busy with school last weeks, hope to put some updates on soon.

Wiebrand

ANd yes I realy want to finish this project soon. But I ratter take some more time to do it good, than to finish it ****ty.

This is an update from wednesday from an week ago.
I had then finally some time to get something done. At first started with putting on the (i don't know how they're called in English) fast-clips?? on the engine lid. And I can say now; hinges are SOOOOO much easier on an round decklid :eek: It took me almost an hole day to get them straight and nice on the lid.
After I got started with making brackets for the removable rear valance.

This is how it looks now;

NOW:D

Last week thuesday I had maked some plates for the dash and for welding close an ventilationgab in the heater channels. I then also unscrewed the steering pilar. And get on search for good hammer and dollies. Because mine are now verry cheap ones, which are $hitty.

Last friday I cut away the border of the engine lid and welded that close.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/thumbs/47172.jpg
Also last saturday I had worked on the car (before I got partying) for 1,5 hour. I begin with installing the 2 lowest hoodpins; i say it again; WHAT AN PAIN in the *** are that hoodpins on an round decklid :mad: .
I "finished" that tonight=> see pic

To keep it on topic: is it possible the decklid warped because of the welding ?

Racelook
March 15th 2007, 10:34
you talking about the gap?
I'm talking about the differents in round form on the left and right end of the decklid. It has not the same form as the body. If I set the pins higher, the form is alsmost okay, but then there will be an gab on the underside, between body en decklid (where the rubber will be).

Kafer_Mike
March 15th 2007, 11:37
Part of the issue may be warping of the deckild as a result of all the welding. Are you going to install the rubber seal? If not, I'd split the difference on the center vs. edge gap using rubber spacers (doughnuts) on the pins to set the height...

Racelook
March 20th 2007, 19:04
So far I could see today it's definatelly the rear panel that is more "round" then the original one. Will be banging it straight soon:mad:

Today received the ordered hammer and dollies. I used it today a couple of times, and I must say quality is just so much better then the cheap ****.

looks like you are making some good progress, even if frustrating. i too am getting ready to tackle hood pins for the c/f decklid i have. my plan is to just fab some brackets that will mount to the stock hinge and latch locations and tie the hood pins in there. so i can flip back to stock at any point needed (with the stock decklid with no holes of course).

i'm not sure how much easier that is really going to be, but will let you know.

keep up the good work. if you make it down to Atlanta, let me know so we can hook up.

Last saturday i was free from work (because of an good party on friday), so I could work on the bug.

At first maked the hoodpins for the front lid on the car.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/66497.jpg

I had an feeling upfront that the lowest hoodpin wouldn't work, and yes I was right. Because of the curf in the hood this can't work with an hoodpin, so I will solve this on an other way.

I also have mounted several things on the bug (front and rear lid, all the fenders, rear panel and the "step-up bords"). Everything fits good except the step-up-bords this will need some work with poly to get it fit right.

do u do the welding work first then blast? or the other way around??

Racelook
August 25th 2008, 11:40
I've done both. But I prefer first blasting and then welding. Than you have some nice cleaned metal and you know for sure that you replaced all the rotten stuff on that place.

Most of the time I first blast all the bad spots alone (that I can see) repair them or spray some epoxy over it and repair it later.

I blasted the hole body a year ago or so. And now only want to blast the spots I didn't reached good enough or the repairs I maked so I can be sure there's a good starting point for the epoxy.
