Keith Seume mentions "phone dials" specifically in the German Look chapter of his Custom Volkswagen book. They may not be the latest, but their existence is still post-German production of Beetles.

Just found a 56 oval window sitting on a B/J pan.
Has Ghia disc brakes up front and Phone-Dials on all 4 corners, and a 1776 for go power....
