Hugo,

OMG, you've gone and done it! Now you officially have the hottest VW Bug EVER. I'm not joking here. When this is finished ABSOLUTELY NOTHING will be as amazing. Thanks so much for doing this, you've established the highest of bars to reach!

If I'm not mistaken that IS Bob Frost-Stevenson's design (rorty-design). He's designed my front end as well.

Sincerely,

Jason Ford

Yeah, SOME modification! Those are Audi front control arms? How are you setting up the geometry? I like the idea of cast aluminum arms, less momentum during travel.

Are you doing the fabrication yourself or having a shop do it?

How much time do you have into it at the point of your pics?

Are the bars that tie the rear-most subframe to the main hoop removeable to allow removing the engine?

Any idea what the balance of the chassis will be with that sexy lump out back?

Thanks in advance.

DORIGTT

I spoke/e-mailed the guy at Rorty-design and the only thing that needs modification is the sections that attach to the heater channels. As you may know, the Ghia's pan is wider. That's the only difference.

C'mon! Let's do it.

Hugo, you can put a 12" up front in the passenger foot well. A small box is built just big enough for the woofer to sit in that seals against the top of the footwell. Then, a hole is cut above and is sealed to the box air volume box residing in the hood area. Helps with weight balance as well. A fiberglass box would work better because it would weigh less and keep the center of gravity lower, but I wanted to make sure it worked well first.

Thanks for the pics, it is and will be a beautiful AND mean car!

I forgot to ask you, how much wider are your fenders than stock? And are those Porsche pattern BBS wheels? What are the offsets and what car where they intended for?

Looks grate thanks for the pics.

the fenders are 2.5" wider (front) and 3" wider (rear) from Creative Car Craft like yours. actually they say me that the fender are the first they sell for mexico.

the bolt pattern are 5 x 120 (BMW)

originally are for BMW M3 (E46)
front 19 x 8.5 +35mm offset,
rear 19 x 10 +20mm offset.

Hi Hugo, Great job!
That's a really nice looking conversion you've started there and a good choice of engine and powertrain too!
I particularly like the substitution of the Corvette front suspension components (if a little heavy though IMHO) which really look the mutt's nuts.
I will be following your build closely, along with everyone else here! Good luck with it all and please keep us posted!

I might be wrong but isn't that v8 watercooled? I dont know much about AUDI. Where do you plan on putting your radiator? Thats the problem I kept running into when I thought about mid-mounting a v8. I thought about doing like Ferrari and putting them just under the back window infront of the rear fender. I dont like the idea of cutting louvers in my hood or deck lid.

I just wondered why not design it so the whole drivetrain could drop out of the bottom? It looks like the engine may be too wide, but if not, you could design a cradle that bolted to the engine/transaxle and then to the frame... just an idea.

You know, I think that is the rear rotor. I don't think I unpacked the front rotors, but they were in the same size box and had the same diameter. I'm guessing they are going with the fact that more braking torque can be applied the farther you get from the center of rotation. The rear caliper is much smaller, so that is probably the rotor for them. Whatever the case, Hugo's going to have some serious braking.

Nice car Hugo. I'm currently collecting parts to build a SBC 283 front engine Super Beetle with either a custom chassis or a modified Chevy S-10 chassis.

Also, everyone, this isn't the first V8 bug, there are dozens out there, but Hugo's is still unique. Most I've seen have front mounted engines. Here's are a couple of links to some V8 bug chassis as well as a forum that features some cool V8 bugs!!!

V8 Bugs Forum (follow the link to the forum):
http://www.V8bugs.com/

You'll find BBC bugs here as well as SBC bugs. One of the BB bugs runs mid 9's in the 1/4 mile.

Here's another link to chassis plans for a V8 front mounted engine.
http://www.prostreetbug.com/

Here's some one actually building these plans:

That's not really competition is the thing, those front mount V8 bugs are pigs to drive, only fast in a straight line and scary at that. The mid-mount is what makes these cars unique, and makes for a whole lot more difficulty to pull off well. The mid-mounts are designed for speed AND handling, the main difference.

Penno,
Nice looking build! What's that transaxle you're using - Renault?
That lightweight Rover engine should make a good performing "Bug" when you're finished. I understand they can make up into the 300hp+ range with a little work (and lots of $$$). The low weight though is the real winner, IMO.

Will the Rorty chassis require wider fenders?

There was an old article in (I think) VW Greats waaaay back when, with a Bug body sitting down on a Mid-Engineering chassis - mid mounted small block Chevy and Corvair tranny, which was pretty standard fare for their chassis' back then. Supposedly made a real rocket ship, with super wide BBS wheels and low profile tires. Sure looked neat!

The length also depend in the position of the tie rod on spindle, in the case of the Corvette C4 spindle the position is far away of the imaginary line between uper and lower ball joint.

I hope this illustration help to explain.

With the general sophistication of your suspension don't confine yourself to the standard bent bar with holes in the end. This cries out for a hollow bar and blade adjustment at the front and a very short roll bar activated by the rockers at the rear.

Whats the rates for the rear suspension units?

Right now have 400 lbs in front 600 lbs rear but I need to ride my car to know if this are the correct rates. ( remember the principal purpose of the car is road race no street).

I want to install a bar with adjustable arms like this:

The springrates will of course be determined by the wheel rate, weight and the desired frequency. The prinicple being to keep the springing soft and the damping firm (Chapman principle).

I had a look at the Nascar units but I would have thought that with a development car that the blade type anti-roll bar would give a greater range of adjustment. The Nascar units might be far to stiff for a lightweight bug especially as they are very heavy and circulate on banked ovals at 200+mph. The roll force must be particularly high.

Yes,he´s a very good friend of mine. The car handles very well.He didn´t build it as a strict drag racer,it can corner just as good as most sports cars.Right now he´s pushing around 600-650hp and hasn´t reached full boost yet.The twin turbos spool up to about 1.2-1.4 bar and he´s finally able to get 0,8-1,0 bar without pulverising the transmission. He estimates it will do about 700-750hp.The tiptronic seems to hold up well even though it was a nightmare to programm. He has done everything himself except the engine and mapping. He´s not an engine buff, but he is an expert in fabricating. It looks like a 1200 beetle, but it´s actually a 1302 - the body has been modified to look like a 1200.The wheelbase is still 1302.It is brutal and incredibly stable.

I like Hugo´s rear suspension arrangement better than El Loco´s,actually. What is your target weight? El Loco´s bug weighs just under 1100kg with a full tank of gas.The fenders are steel also.

I want 500-600 hp.

You will get that easily..My friend's 3.6 audi V8 twin turbo put out just under 500 hp with only 0,3 bar boost. Now he's running around 750 with 1,2 bar.The dynos he has been on so far don't like his tiptronic transmission, they abort the run when it shifts,so we don't really know how much hp he actually has.

Hello, question, is this vehicle for the track only? The reason for my question is the road height. Wonderful project, professional work, impeccable.

The main purpose of the project it's for track, but eventually I take the car to street (for show events or some meetings), that's why I have two sets of wheels and the coilovers suspension to adjust the road height.

How is the build going?

Sorry very very slow update , Most work is on electronics an software for the car, I plan to controll all with electronic modules and wireless or touch panel, no mechanicals switches or relays. so I design a can bus network to comunicate all modules and have less wires around car.
In the car I work very slow because I have a column injury and it's dificult to work long periods of time.

Here are some pics.

Wow steering wheel is incredible. Where did you learn to the electronics knowledge to assemble something like that?

It's nothing more than arduino with NRF24L01 for wireless.
You literally can find thousands of tutorials for arduino on web.
I made the first steering wheel with arduino pro mini, nrf24l01 and lipo charger modules.
but I don't like it the wires, box and I need to charge occasionally. After some search I found great tutorials about low power arduino, and once all work fine with a coin cell (must work for about 2 years on CR2032) I decide to go furter and made my own board, so I found great tutorials for EAGLE to design schematics and boards.

And I made my own reflow oven with a chaeap toaster ($15) and arduino uno and reflow oven controller shield http://www.rocketscream.com/blog/product/reflow-oven-controller-shield-arduino-compatible/

Here some tutorial for arduino low power:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urLSDi7SD8M&t=12s&index=31&list=LLXdqRwLul9fGT8BdjRZSZpA

Here how you can build and arduino minimal board (just I made with different chip package):

http://www.gammon.com.au/breadboard

Here how tu burn 1Mhz bootloader for very low power consumption:

After some search I found great tutorials about low power arduino, and once all work fine with a coin cell (must work for about 2 years on CR2032) I decide to go furter and made my own board, so I found great tutorials for EAGLE to design schematics and boards.

And I made my own reflow oven with a chaeap toaster ($15) and arduino uno and reflow oven controller shield http://www.rocketscream.com/blog/product/reflow-oven-controller-shield-arduino-compatible/

Here some tutorial for arduino low power:

Here how you can build and arduino minimal board (just I made with different chip package):

Here how tu burn 1Mhz bootloader for very low power consumption:

Arduino NRF24L01 tutorial:

Thank you! Awesome, Im going to have to look into integrating this into my build.

Sorry to hear about your back, updates are awesome.
I greatly support the canbus idea. Currently working on rewiring calculations to update the original full wiring loom in order to compare it with a canbus layout

Keep it going. It doesn't matter if you work slowly, take your time and get well...

Some pics of the last work.
Front part of Body is instaled (welded to roll cage) and the interior is painted and headliner instaled.

Also working in suicide hinges for doors, the main reason for this setup is:
First I want to quit the original hinges because at high speed can hear the wind making noise, so I want a flat surface in this area.
And second it's easier to get in and out of the car because the roll cage and side bars are very obstructive.

Its all business on the inside! :)
I did the same with the hinges and drip rail on my Oval also.
Cleans the look of the beetle when looking down the side.
Cheers
