View Full Version : 993 multilink rear suspension with 6 speed G50

I've decided after spending close to $3500 on my cayenne turbo brakes, to go with the suspension setup from a 993 (please let the caliper mount be similar to a 944 :rolleyes: ). Since i'm planning on using the 6 speed g50 the frame horns are trimmed to next to nothing left, in fact the bader ghia took like 12" off of them entirely. So after looking at "total 911" the magazine dedicated to 911's, I decided to go with the rear suspension from a 993 and mate it up with the transmission and mount it to the torsion housing, frame horns (or whats left of them), shock mounts, and full funny car style cage. If any of you have any info on this crazy ordeal, let me know. I thought I saw a rear A arm setup in the picture gallery.

The cool thing about the rear of the 993 that was hugely improved over the 964 chassis is the multilink rear suspension setup. The entire rear suspension unit is carried by the subframe, which helps insulate the car from noise, and the system utilises soft rubber bushes placed where the lower wishbone pivots on the subframe. When cornering and experiencing lateral forces, the rubber is compressed, which causes the hub to move inwards. This, in turn, causes the track control arm to induce 'toe-in'. This movement is inverted on the opposite side and the result is a kind of rear-wheel-steering which translates into more stable, more predictable handleing characteristics, particularly when cornering and braking hard. Only the rear suspension was given this treatment because there wasn't enough room for it up front, but it was enough. The benefits were enormous and the new 911 now handled more fluidly, had more body control and was less harsh than ever. Understeer was reduced and road noise was vastly improved.

Check out the picture and it "seems" easier to fit the whole shabangabang into the back of a T1 compared to makeing my own custom setup.

Another plus is that it is entirely made from aluminum so it's light as well.

The negative thing is that I just bought trailing arms from a late 944 and shipped them across the country to me two days ago. And I already have my front suspension built with a puma beam, through rods, and coil overs.

Now that I decided to go with the rear, I HAVE to go with the front with rack and pinion steering. I'M NEVER GOING TO BE DONE AT THIS RATE! AND I'M PUTTING A MINIMUM OF $2000 DOLLARS A MONTH INTO THIS REDICULOUS PROJECT!

Weren't beetles 1800 dollars new?...wow. :drunk:

Umm...if you decide to part on those front brake pieces from a 993(since you already have the Cayenne turbo ones)....you know how to reach me.... :cool:

Yeah, it's really easy to spend mucho dinero when it all needs to be "custom"!

I was planning on the C4 setup but the C2 is a far better track car (and funner aka over steer) and that is what this car is going to be used for. With 500 hp, 6 speeds, C2 suspension, and the most rediculous brakes ever put on a beetle, (Lanner is having a hard time finding a master big enough to push enough fluid to 24 pistons) this little beetle should'nt have any problems on the track. I imagine the car will be around 1900 lbs when i'm finished. Who knows, I might change my mind again tommorow. I think that's why this is getting so expensive :whoops: .

By the way Volkdent, I never understood how anyone could spend so much money on "just metal and bolts" until I started down the custom path.

My only concern is getting the angles right for the macpherson struts front and rear, I'll do my homework.

I've spent my life savings on this car when I was planning on using it to go to racing school.

This'll be one hell of a car when i'm done though. Porsche's handleing, VW's weight advantage and nimbleness and my heavy foot will be a lot of fun (I hope I don't have to make use of the roll cage)!

Have a word with Mike Ghia and Marco Mansi. Mike is planning to use this set-up and Marco was initially, he changed his mind as the suspension got in the way of the exhaust manifold (wasser) once it was narrowed to fit...

I'm not worried about it getting in the way of exhaust because i'm using an inline 4.

He got a little ahead of himself and had to sell it off, but apparently he was working on a full tube chassis.
