Ok guys. I got a big one for ya!! Ive looked around and haven’t found much on this but that’s because I’m new to the vw scene. I’m looking for info on re-drilling my drums to 4x100mm so that I can run some 17”x7” Honda wheels on my standard bug with stock finders!!! I would get wider finders but I just painted my bug, so I don’t want to try and match up the paint. I know this can be done, ive seen pics before but I couldn’t get any response out of the person who did it. punk… I’m wanting yall to post some pics of the ones yall have found with the specs, such as wheel size, off set, front beam narrowed or not, drop spindles. I’m sure I’m not the only one on this forum who is looking for these answers.

Not much response on this. So I’m guessing we’ll just have to figure this one out the hard way!! Ok. Well my wheels on my bug right now are 5.5” wide and they have a back spacing of 3.75” according to www.CIP1.com . Now this doesn’t make much since to me!!! If the back spacing starts from the center line of the wheel to the bolt face this would put the bolt face 1” out from the edge of the wheel!!! Now 3.75” is 95mm that’s a heck of a lot of back spacing. This can’t be right.

Here is the part number on that site, they wouldn’t let me copy and past the picture. Maybe they are saying its 3.75” from the inner edge of the wheel to the bolt face. That would make it +25mm back spacing. Now that sounds more like it. What do yall think about that???

In the past when dropping my bug all the way down in the front with the adjustable beam the tires will scrub the edges of the finders when I hit bumps in the road. So I’m assuming that if I plan on sticking a wheel that is 1.5” bigger I’m going to have to keep the back spacing the same and put that extra 1.5” on the inside of my wheel!!! No but wait the back spacing wouldn’t be the same. It would change to +45mm back spacing. Somebody check these numbers. And does any body know if you have enough room under there to put 1.5” on the inside of a wheel????

Breeze,
Nobody has replied because this sort of question has been asked a million times before. Use the search button above!

Backspacing IS measured from the inside face of the wheel, offset (ET) is measured from the centreline, so you are right in your assumptions.

When fitting wider wheels, be aware that you will have to adjust your steering stops and will end up with reduced lock...

hello breeze, the setup you are looking for sounds similair to my bug, 2"narrowed beam, dropped spindles 7.5x 17 et50 , with standard spindles 20mm spacers were required, this gave an adequate lock and fitted under stock fenders. As i have now fitted dropped spindles and they move your track out i will require less spacer when the car is put back together , only around 10mm of spacer.Using the above figures as a guide you sould be able to work out any wheel spacer combo ie 7.5 17 et50 =20mm spacer
7.5 17 et70=40mm spacer
7.5 17 et 30=0mm spacer
this is just a rough guide but you get the idea :D

I made a spacer block of 40mm which is all most how much wider the wheel will be on the inside and checked the clearance with it and with the steering wheel turn all the way there isn’t enough room. I could run these wheels but I would have to bump stop them after one full rotation of the steering wheel. I may go with the 42et and run them until summer. Then get me some wider finders and get spacers so I can have my turning radius back!! You know what they say wider is better. Who makes wider finders?? I want to go with the pre67 style!!
