I have been spending my Thanksgiving researching suspension setups that easily swap to the IRS pan. Here is what I have found and the applicable references.

Bruce Anderson from the 911 Performance Handbook says this for the early 911, which is what I think is the best reference for our T1 cars:

Torsion Bars: Front 21mm, Rear 26-27mm (stock F 18.8mm, R 24.1mm, Late R 25mm, Turbo R all 26mm)

Sway Bars: 22mm F & R (no clue what stock is)

Now for some 924/944 Rear info:

924 Front Sway Bar:
76-77 Opt: 20mm
78 Opt: 22mm
79 Opt: 23mm
80 on Std: 21mm
80 Opt: 23mm

Rear Sway Bar:
76-77 Opt: 18 mm
78-on 14mm (std w/ 23.5 mm t-bars)
14mm (option w/ 22mm t-bars)

Torsion Bar:
76-79 Std: 22mm
78-79 Opt: 23.5 mm
80+ Std 23.5 mm

931 Front Sway Bar: 80 on = 23mm
Rear Sway Bar: 14mm
Torsion Bar: 23.5mm

944 Front Sway Bar:
Std: 20mm
Opt: 21.5 solid, 23 mm tubular
1989:Std: 23mm Opt: 25.5mm

Rear Sway Bar:
Std: None
Opt: 14mm until 86
Opt: 18mm after
M030: 20mm

Torsion Bars:
Std: 23.5mm,
M030: 24.5mm until 86, 25.5mm onwards

944 S Front Sway Bar:
Std: 20mm
Opt: 21.5 solid, 23mm tubular, 25.5 tubular

Rear Sway Bar:
Std: None
Opt: 18mm
Opt M030/M637 25.5mm

Torsion Bar:
Std: 23.5mm?

944 S2 Front Sway Bar:
89 Std: 20mm
89 Opt: 26.8mm
90+ Std 26.8mm

Rear Sway Bar:
89 Std: 18 mm
90+ std: 16mm

Torsion Bar:
Std: 24mm
M030/1: 25.5mm

944 Turbo Front Sway Bar:
Std 22.5mm, 25.5mm MY' 87
Opt: 24mm, 25mm
M030: 26.8mm

Rear Sway Bar:
Std: 18mm

Torsion Bar:
Std: 23.5mm solid
M030: 25.5 mm

944 Turbo S Front Sway Bar:
Std 26.8 mm

Rear Sway Bar:
88/ 89 18mm
89-? 16mm

Torsion Bar:
Std 25.5mm solid

VW aftermarket bars 26 9/16" long are a direct fit. Available in 22-30mm rear torsion sizes from SAW.

VW T3 Heavy Duty rear torsion bar = 23.5mm

I *think* VW SAW front and rear sway bars F&R are available in 7/8" and 3/4" diameters.
3/4" = 19.04mm
7/8" = 22.23mm

So the perfect setup is... :)

Front Sway Bar: 22mm from SAW
Rear Sway Bar: 18mm from 944 Turbo (or SAW 7/8"=22mm)
Rear Torsion Bar: 25.5mm from 944 M030/1 option. Or SAW.

Still unknown to me is what options are available for the front torsion beams, but from my experiences the stock ones are more than enough.

Hope this helps and puts some light on the options available. Again my bias is to set it up like an early 911 due to the F/R weight biases.

Take Care,

Great info.

You should put it into a Word Document with some pics and we could post it up to the tech article section.

Over achiever :>)
Yep! this is good stuff.

This is just the info I need to help out my friend who wants to upgrade the rear torsion bars on his T3 wagon.
