Seems this is a indeed rare item.

Anyone used one/ seen one in Europe? Or is it an American item?

It is an American item for sure but I don't know if it is an American only item. That is the one item on that page my dad did not have on his '66. He had the walnut one instead.

Whether it was rare or not may not be as important as it is now probably rare in decent condition. I see the walnut one from time to time but usually in fair to poor condition. I can only imagine what a 35-plus year old leather one might look like.

One will turn up some day for you.

Its basically like a Hurst Shifter. As I understand it, they're quite expensive for the original VW option, BUT you could make one using a shifter stick from Hurst.

It would be incredibly easy to make using a stock assembly and modifying it. All the cuts and welds (or bolts) would be covered by an aftermarket shift boot. You could put whatever you want for the shiftknob.

Its just a kind of obsession with the original :)

Otherwise I guess I`d just buy a new one from CSP.

You are focused on what you want. Sounds like a good kind of obsession to me. If I see one in my surf-abouts, I'll let you know.

I do like my CSP though.

Up to the top.

Also: do all agree that the CSP shifter is as nice as I have the impression it is? Want the ball style knob.- But what type of lockout? Does other shift-knobs fit straight on?

I am unanimous in liking mine.

Want the ball style knob.- But what type of lockout?
Here (http://www.csp-shifter.com/shifter.php?wkid=90776831769&sprache=en&shop=shop2) is the link for selecting the shifter you want through CSP. You will notice the butterfly is the only choice with a ball knob.

Does other shift-knobs fit straight on?
I have not tried to remove the ball knob so I don't know about thread size or anything like that.
