Spare for Porsche Rims

Hey guys...

72' SB is lowered and front end rebuilt! I have purchased Twists...7's for the front and 9's for the back. And I will have discs all the way around.

My question is in re. to a spare. For those of you with the different width rims...

Are you all purchasing a genuine porsche spare tire? Or are you actually purchasing an extra 7 and 9" tire? or just purchasing a 7" and using for the rear incase of a rear flat?

Porsche pattern space savers come up on Ebay often, they are the type that needs to be inflated, but they give you more space in your boot or you could have a Porsche pattern centre welded into and existing VW wheel new. You could also find a skinny Fuchs wheel for a spare but they can get expensive.

For my daily driver 1303 I have a 16 inch space saver wheel from some sort of jap car, I had a steel plate made up and welded in the centre, it has 3 stud patterns in it. 4x130, 5x130 and 5x100. Its the pre inflated type but is very skinny so it fit in the stock spare wheel hole nicely.

For my other 1303 I have a alloy Porsche space saver.

I hear the collapsable spare will fit in the "boot" (front trunk) if your car is the kind where the spare sits flat..not upright.

I'm using one of these Porsche "skinny" spares on my '69 Standard. It's a 17" rim, but matches the overall height of my 16" Fuchs and tires -- and it fits in the spare tire well. Mine is brand new. I paid $75 for it on eBay...

This is what I'm using as well. It fits in the spare tray with a little room to move. I also got the jack and handle that mounts to it from the inside. BTW, it came out of a Boxster or 996 if you want to look for one.

I have the collapsible type from a 944 in my 61' it fits just fine.

I have a collapsible 944 one, in my balljoint '73, I would have to SHOVE it in. I will be doing a little fetteling with a car jack before I get the car painted.

I have been told that if I remove the tyre from the Porsche space saver that it is possible to fit a standard 15" radial tyre..( Original tyre wont stay inflated)...But the local Porsche dealership says "not possible" please pay us $800 (AUD) for a new one! Any advice ?9Beetle is fitted with Porsche 5 stud pattern...

I don't see why not. The dealer is probably saying that for liability reasons. The collapsible tires that are mounted on them are 165's so I would assume you could fit "regular" 165's, 145's, or maybe even 135's on them. I have no personal experiance with them so don't hold me to it.;)

Is there any difference between the 944, 928 and later 996 or Boxter spare rim? I see alot of 944/928 rims on Ebay cheap, but not many 996/Boxter as mentioned above. I'm looking for a spare for a 5-lug converion on both a 914 and a Karmann Ghia... smaller the better...

You can fit standard 15" tyres to the 15" spare steel rim for sure. In the UK there is a guy who runs these all around on a bus
