Hi, I have just bought a complete front and rear set from a 1986 944 turbo, however the rears wont work because the beetle stub axles have a courser groove thread than the porsche hubs....my question is...

can i use 944 stub axles (are they the same length?) and change the cv one the drive shaft one end or will i need to change both ends? therefore changing the trans end.

Are using the alu trailing arms from the 86 944 turbo? If so, you just retain the stub axles, CV joints and axles from the same 944 turbo you obtained the trailing arms. You need to change the CV flanges on the T1 gearbox to the "Things" CVs

Thing flange has the same CV bolt pattern as the type 2 and porsche 944. However you need the Thing flanges to bolt on the beetle gearbox. Type 2 flanges won't fit beetle T1 box. I think there is an US company selling used parts for Things but I can't remember the name. You may try to search it on the internet. Alternatively you may buy aftermarket CV flanges with T2 bolt pattern for beetle gearbox. Search some online shops.

If a pair of Type 181 differential flanges aren't obtainable, you can use what you have with +'87 944 S CV axles. They're the ones with the finer spline that's same as a Type I CV axle. Use the Porsche CV joint on the stub-axle end of the shaft, and the VW CV joint on the differential end of the shaft.
