Steering wheel size

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this has been done before,I tried searching and couldn't find anything.
I have a 1974 1303 and want to put a non-stock steering wheel in. However the temporary sports steering wheel that is in there at the moment is too small in diameter and blocks some of my speedo. I know this is a common problem in 1303's. What size steering wheel is big enough to stop this problem? And what different makes of steering wheel offer one in the correct size?

It shouldnt make a difference but this is for a RHD car in Australia.

well I also have a 74 and I have changed my wheel I have a Sparco wheel and you can use a Momo adapter or you can just use any momo wheel too.

The steering hub size had a mid-year change in 1974. The earlier ones are the same as an '85 911. Same goes for 1971-73. The later ones are the same an A2 flatformed Golf (1985-92). Same goes for 1975-79.

I have a 74 1303 as well. I'm using a 350 mm Momo wheel. I'm a little over 6 foot and I cant see the top of the wheel, but when I had my speedo out, I had the lines extended at each 10kph marking towards the centre, it helps. My car uses the later style splines on the hub, fine spline with a taper.

I've thought of several different ways to combat this, lower the seats, lower the speedo in the dash, fit a smaller speedo in the same hole that can sit lower down or fit a 2 inch speedo where the clock would sit. Like these ones http://egauges.com/vdo_mult3.asp?Type=Speedometer&Series=Cyber_Red

Thanks for posting this request. I am in the process of replacing my steering wheel on my '73 standard Type 1. I want to go with a Momo and they have adapters for early and later models but am not sure of the depth or dish that would work best. The 350mm size seems about right. The Monte Carlo looks like it might work and a friend has the Mod 07 (?) but the dish may be too deep.

To me those momo and sparco steering wheels remind me to much of the movies The Fast And The Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift HAHA!
I like the oldschool Grant GT slotted steering wheel, of course those Momos wouldnt look right in my car because they wouldnt match my window cranks which are slotted also.

i got a momo copy wheel that has an offset hub so it sits just right to see the speedo
however ive just swapped for a new momo one and back to the same old prob

just want to share my steering wheel, it's a Classic Nardi suede steering wheel, 13.5 i think, I think it'll do good on a 1303-S.:)

Bugluv its just the TypeR kind of ebay cost me $40 and the boss kit was from one of my other bugs but u can also get them on ebay easy enough as well

I wasn't bagging your car, I just meant that it was looking fully sik maate. Are you going real carbon fibre? I bought some carbon fibre look contact paper from a sign writing supply place.

im going the same way as u, just some CF styling film
real CF here in aus would cost half the national debt
im tossing up whether to do my running boards as well
the stuff ive got is for motorbike bodywork so is weather proof

The stuff that I used was very thin, it was very easy mould around curves but the surface would have to be very smooth. It was meant for outside signs so it would be weather proof.

So the standard 72 beetles steering hub size would be the same as a 85 911, or would mine be the same as the 85-92 golf platform?If so, I can just get a steering wheel for these applications?kinda confused, or am i out of luck and your talking about the super beetles?
