How is that power with the EJ20 NA? I have the same motor in my standard, but I'm just getting the car together and haven't had a chance to unleash the ponies. Did you use the stock ECU or an aftermarket? I'm using Megasquirt. I'm interested in how your progress is going, good work!

I can chime in on the power..

I drove Martin's (Bugat5speed) car, with a 1.8 lt and a 5 speed, and was very impressed on the roads we drove. Very easy drive on public roads, with power to pass.

Not sure what your plans are, but I would think the 2 lt would be a little more torque than the 1.8. If its a DD, and part time fun car, definitely enjoyable and powerful.

If full out track, then you may need something more powerful than 140-150 Hp.

For some reason I can only see half of the pics when I click on them.

Did you move the transmission forward to make the motor fit ?

Hi

Nice work, is your motor DOHC or SOHC?

Rob,You need to scroll across on photos, I did the same thing.

Thanks guys for your kind words, this gives me the motive to keep the hard work!!

cfordyce05 ..I can't tell you how is the feeling of driving the car because i've to wait in order to install the exhaust system.
At the moment i use the stock ECU but I'm planning to install a paraller ECU (called Dastek).

Rob..when you load the picture, hit a click on it and then you will be able to see the picture fit on screen.
No,I didn't have to move the transmission forward(everything remain on stock location).

Steve..The motor is the SOHC one and it is perfectly fitted on stock engine area.

Hey Jim, hows your project going? I finally got my car with the EJ20 NA on the road. It's turning into a pretty fun car to drive as I get "bugs", no pun intended, worked out. So far my main concern is airflow to my radiator. I have mine mounted on the firewall drawing air from the louvers under the rear window. At highway speeds, I think the airflow over the car is creating too much of a low pressure zone and not allowing the fans to suck as they should. I was thinking about trying a small spoiler over the rear window to break up airflow over the car and create a high pressure area to help the fans out. As soon as I slow down, it starts to cool off. So far it has gotten up to 214 degrees, and that was with 45 degree weather! With the deck lid off I have never had it that high while driving. I plan on starting a car profile to document my conversion, but haven't had time with school and marriage. Good luck with your conversion! Once I get my fuel tuned up pretty good, I'm going to take the car to a dyno and tune my spark. I'll let you know what kind of numbers I get.

Hi Casey,

Keep going with your project I think it deserves the money and time we have spend!

You can see in the following link were is the last update in my project.
I have had some troubles with the VSS sensor but this already belongs in the past!!! http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=67945

Now from what i have heard from other forums the best way to manage the airflow in the radiator is to place it at the front of your car(if it is a super, you have more space to use).
Mine is placed at the front with an extra fabricated sheet of metal between the front halls and the radiator and after many hours of driving the water temp was never pass the 80 degrees:D .
If you want more advice in your current setup then why you shouldnt try to search in the above forum such also in Germanlook...i think both sites have the knowledge & answers in your concerns.

Do not forget me with the Dyno results:D :D :D

Cheers,
Jim

Hey, Your car is looking good from what I saw on the other thread. I have taken a big step towards my cooling issue. Just by adding a scoop over the rear window vents, I am now down to about 182-186 cruising and 189-191 under load going up hills and hard driving. This was at 60 degrees out instead of 45 degrees. That is a great improvement over 214! My dyno run should be fairly soon because I have my fuel pretty much sorted out.

Jim,

Thanks for asking.. Its going a little slow, had some serious pan head issues over the summer, finally decided to get a new chassis, but after removing paint discovered that it was equally damaged. Then I decided get some proffesional help to repair the existing chassis, that went slow do to sourcing a new pan head, and some work overlow at their shop..

Good news is that my pan head should have arrived today, so no my chassis will get full attention, which means blasting, spot repairs, pan head replacement, new pans, some AN fittings for fuel through the tunnel, and a new paint job..

Hopefully after that I can turn my attention to the suspension, my 5 speed box, and brakes that have been sitting around so now I have clean all that up..

Once that is done, I am sending the body off for repair and paint.. hopefully that won't be as much of an issue..

Other than that, going ok ;)

Well,

After lot of time thinking of which is the best strut insert for my setup, finally decided and ordered 2 pairs of Gaz adjustable inserts. These units can be built in various open and closed lengths and will adjust bump and rebound off a single control knob.

The rear end has been droped 3cm,new 944 (23.5mm) torsion bars were introduced and also a pair of wheel spacers were bolt in the rear brakes for extending the length of each side for 5.5cm!

I have also in mind to buy a new lamda sensor (universal bosch) for my suby as this one is passed away.

More pics to come when the new inserts arrived and install.

Yesterday we got together with some other beetle enthusiasts in a track in order to see how our beetle handles.

It was a lot of fun driving without anticipation but only for pleasure!!!

I was very pleased from the way my beetle handles in the track and how smoothly the engine helps me to drive as fast i can.
Adjustments and some good parts needs to be introduced in the car in order to finish it.

Update...........

after looooong time in hybernation and some engine problems the time has come for me to proceed!

I new i was having an oil leak when i first bought the engine and first run it but this doesnt bother me to join drives and adding oil.....but.....in the truck the mistakes were payed and payed heavily.
After of 15 minutes pushing the bugaru hard in the corners i've heard a noice tickling from inside the engine deck:eek::eek::eek:
I check the oil and found that more than one ltr missing:(:(
A raf estimation was that one of the set of bearings inside the connecting rod was scratched but the engine must be open first!

I stop over and took the car back to home until i get ready for rebuilding
and here we are..

The problem is concerning the bearing inside the connecting rod and nothing more:cool:, so we choose to change some of the engine component parts and rebuild it such as:

New oil pump
New set of bearings
New gaskets kit
New piston rings and more...

Expected to be ready by the end of the month here are some photos in random

Thanks Scott!!

Well a few hours before end of the year last unexpected thing happened..
An old lady hit me with her car in the bumper but for my good luck my mechanic was there and with my insurance all the legal staff were arranged.

So, new polyester bumper will be introduced plus the painting job.

here are the evidence...

so, its time again for engine update..

The block painted in silver colour and three more things that need to be painted is the water tube, valve covers and timing belt cover all in anthracite colour.
We will also re-locate the water tube in the back of the intake manifold so to achive better look from in front.

At last... after 9 months without driving my beetle, finally the first ride take place this saturday in the road but now totally different then before.........rebuilded and painted:no:

The assembly of the engine is done and after painted is taking place back in to the engine bay and i must say that i am very pleased from the result.
Everything is in the right position as it has to be!!

The first 200km after the rebulid came very smooth and easy, the rev's didnt pass the 3500rpm.I have checked the oil and water level until the first change in 1000km.

GAZ struts in combination with bigger rear torsion bars provide better handling and gives you the feeling that it "reads" very well the road.

After the bumper will be replaced and painted by end of the next week some things may left to be introduced:

1.oil pressure gauge
2.bosch universal lamda
3.throttle reversed cable.

and a few photos from the first ride... ::)

Hi, if you shorten the frame horns and move the engine/trans forward, is it possible to install the 6 cylinder in a super beetle? Sand Sport mag showed a story on the mods that can be done. The four and six cylinder shows great pormise?

Guys..advice need it..

I've noticed that this intake solenoid is tapped after the rebuild but before the rebuild was leading somewhere..

Do you know were or maybe someone can provide a diagram for all the NA solenoids?

Thanks & regards,
Jimmy

Jim,
see pic below. It hooks up to a tube that goes to the controller/sensor on the right with the green sticker on top. Not sure what it is for though :o

Thanks a lot for the pic and the compliment Rob!

Luckilly a guy from the aussies explain me that this solenoid is acquired if i have a subaru charcoal canister which i did not:D and advice me to block it.

The strange is that the solenoid it was plugged before the rebuild somewhere(i dont know were) but for some reason now it's tapped but the engine runs fine.

Anyway i will ask my engineer!

Small update...

Finally I have changed the old lamda with a new Japanese one NTK.

The old one has been damaged and the engine was running to rich.
Now the mixture is stabilized in stock conditions and maybe a dyno will show us the new results.

With half of tank I have made approx. 230km and if you consider the very short ratio transaxle and the 2.0lt engine I think it's a very good result for me.

and 2 photos from my baby!

In future plans these instruments will light up my interior and who knows what else.......

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5384/mrtgaugesc15.jpg

Now lets get back to business....

During the past days i have encounter an oil pressure problem and after the fact i've changed the oil pressure sender with new one the problem still persists.

New semisynthetic oil 15w50 and nipon oil filter introduced but the only change is to see higher pressure at cold 6.7bar and at hot idle around 0.9bar.

I have noticed some oil leak from this solenoid (i dont know how this called) and I strapped it.

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/6943/imag0815.jpg

Through my plans it was to cut my intake "Injen style" manifold and add the air filter as closer as i can to maf sensor.I dont know if this has a better efficiency but i like the result!

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/2807/imag0798.jpg[/img]

After the cut and after reset the ECU some times the idle plays from 400rpm to 700rpm and i was wondering if the time has come to clean the idle control valve & MAF but i cant locate the valve!

Also does anyone reverse the oil tube succesfully?

Any info would be appreciated guys!

Rgrds,
Jimmy

The radiator is on the front of the car in the spare tyre location and you need some metal trimming in order to fit it down there..

Merry Christmas to all!!

In the last few days some minor problems came up.

1.When the engine warm up and during the ride i have instantly three or four stall, it's like that someone to cut the power or the petrol.

This only happens(dont' know if this is by accident) in winter time and i've noticed when the humidity is up.
So first came in my mind to check the fuel pump and i have in idle 2.5 bar and in full rpms 3.5bar with regular flow.

Next i thought the MAF sensor because i dont have a knock sensor.

So i buy a CRC MAF cleaner and with carefull i sprayed the MAF and let it to vaporized (like photo). Then i bolt it back and i think i have gain some power.
Till today i have done 3 rides with no hesitation at all.

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/421/p1021500.jpg

Next step( if it aint MAF) is to change the spark plugs or the coil.

Do you suggest anything else that might be checked???

2. I tapped one oil evaporasation leak and change also a handbrake cable because it brokes.

3. I re-assembly the MAF and intake air filter.

http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/9825/imag1512.jpg

4.Change one brake hose line cause it was worn out!!!
New oil 10W-40 castrol magnatec + oil & fuel filter introduced.

5.From next week i will finally make some progress in interior(new dashboard & central console)

more photos from the progress next week.

update..:D

After raised this thread on aussies http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=87474 i have realized that the dimming lights were the source of the problem.
The driving distance is every day the same, home-work-home so back to home in the afternoon i need to open the lights and that cause the stall.
The fuse is overloaded with power and is gets really hot with result of losing power somewhere and instantly cut me off.

So the simplest test was to open the lights during the day and see if the problem comes up.

And guess..... Yes it stalls once more so it has something to do with the dim lights. I'm thinking tol bypass the big scale and send it directly to battery or tol add a relay.:lol:

Jim
