Tried a little search but no luck...

So: what is the big advantage swapping the early 3-bolt to the 2-bolt strut?
As far as I can read, VW did this to improve safety. Can anyone explain this issue a bit better? I think it is similiar to rolling a wheel with it leaning to the inside vs the outside = more stable

Are there any more issues? Clearance with larger wheels?

And lastly: are there any good kits to lower the 3 bolt design? Don`t need coilovers, looking for a about 50mm lowering. At what point do I need to change the shocks?

The 3 bolt spindles are the strongest, 2bolt tend to break around the lower balljoint.

2 bolt give you more tuning options

CSP has lowering springs to get your wanted 50mm

Give a search over at SBO! for "negative roll radius" and you'll get the info you're seeking.

Hi

I've had modified version of both.

The biggest disappointment with the 2 bolt is that you cant go as low as a 3 bolt car and on my 2 bolt car the nuts on the drag link touch lower control arm when negotiating something like steep driveway where the suspension goes through a large movement. I don't think that this would be a problem on a rack & pinion car.

I'm not sure how the negative roll radius is affected when running different offset wheels.

But I'm still very happy with way my 2 bolt car handles.
