Strut upper mount Problem ? (picture)

I have my '74 super lowered
empi adj. struts pass the lowest "setting",stock springs and oil filled empi incerts

anyhow I was getting gas and noticed both my struts upper mounts look like this under the hood (notice the gap)...I've No unusual sounds or shaking of any kind at any speed...
What would cause this and what is needed to be done/replaced to fix it.... I'm sure it can't be safe

As far as I'm concerned that's natural for a top mount of that style. It may be a little old/worn but I don't think there's much to worry about. You may want to replace them at some point, I replaced mine with the earlier style because they seemed firmer.
