I have started SB hunting and would like to know what would be the best year to buy. I've have seen that in some posts people like more the 73. What are your thoughts?

Hi

I've had both types, I now prefer the 73 or later with the curved windscreen. Couple of reasons, I feel that they are more aerodynamic than a flat screen car, they have much bigger area between the hood edge an the A pillar which has got to help with rigidity.

A rack & pinion model I feel is best but all of the suspension systems can be swapped around between models.

Thanks Steve C.

Is it pretty easy to fit a 73 super with a rack and pinion system?

Hi

I fitted a rack & pinion from a 75 into 72 (flat screen bug), its not easy but it can be done.

I personally own a 1973 Superbug and prefer it (over the '74 and later) simply because of the smaller bumpers; however, anything can be changed (within reason and with some effort) on these cars so essentially you can buy any year and make it what you want it to be. The cars earlier than '74 will benefit from the late front suspension being retrofitted to them. The '75 and later rack and pinion, although nice, isn't such a great benefit to warrant all the work necessary (in my opinion); in fact, I've read that the German Kafer Cup racers said that the early steering box turned quicker than the rack.
