I just ran across this thread.

Looks promising .... hoping to find a rear coilover to use with relaxed stock springplates and stock steel arms.

I'd suggest to get the ones from Gerd Weiser.
They are Bilstein dampers with a main and tender spring from Eibach (ERS), IMHO basically the best shocks and springs you can get (for a reasonable price).

And PeteVW uses them, but he can't turn them down all the way since he is using 944 Aluminium trailing arms :)

What do you mean with relaxed springplates?
You want to keep the torsion bars?

I've heard from at least 2 people that they didn't like the combination of torsion bars with a regular spring.
As far as I can remeber this was with KW rear coilovers at 924's.

Yes, I want to keep the torsion bars ... but only to solidify the springplates so they don't deform while driving.

I need to keep the stock steel trailing arms due to my brake system and wheel offset / fender combo.

I don't need to adjust toe in (with 935 style spring plates) ... too much cost for limited functionality. Once the toe is set, you don't need to change it again.

I'd prefer to source things out of North America because the $ to Euro/Pound ratio is not in my favor, even though the products out of Europe are amazing.

just looking over this forum and where do I buy the coil over shocks from and how much do they run and the spring plate replacement any info will be fantastic.:cool:

The springs used on the GWD coilover can be ordered at Eibach USA and I guess if you call Bilstein USA they can supply you with some coilover dampers.

I guess 935 style springplates are the best solution.
There are cheaper versions available, mainly from sandrail/buggy companies, like here:

Alternatively both Tafel and GWD sell a torsion bar cover with some sort of bearing in it, which allows for removal of the torsion bars.

Awesome. Do you have to contact GWD direct to purchase the coilover set? Do they ship worldwide?

Their webshop doesn't work yet, so you'd have to call or e-mail him.
And he'd be more than happy to ship it anywhere you want :)

I made some spacers to clear the arms and properly fasten the shocks. The way it was, the bolt was right up against the bottom bearing mount. Seizing it all up, and interfering with the arm.

I hope to have a motor in it soon. Wonder how it will sit with some weight.

Here is another fellow, who gave me the idea to use the same QA-1 coilovers, not sure you have seen his post on Rennlist.

Very similiar, but gives more detail in some areas, that may not be apparent on the first link. He did not have a good way to attach the top of the coilover.

I've got the QA1's to fit upside down by drilling a new lower cup mounting hole, higher than the original hole. Make sure you check that the shock does not bottom out before you drill.

I'm now using the DDR4855P model, but still deciding on the spring rate before ordering the springs.

300# will be pretty damn close based on Clive's calculation, depending on rear axle weight you might go as high as 350-375

Hi Sandeep,
Why not junk the bump stop on the trailing arm and fit one on the damper? That'll have two effects:
1) The bump stop then relates specifically to the damper as it should without relying on a remote location and possible miscalculation (and zip ties!).
2) The bump stop would act as a cleaner/scrapper on the damper rod adding to the cleaning seals and minimising the possibility of ingesting dirt.
QA should be able to recommend some bumpstops.

For bumpstops go with the vw/audi marshmellow bumpstops. they are a favorite of racers because of their progressive nature. You can trip them down as needed.
