Check out this clip, Sabine in the Ring Taxi:

I've driven the Ring in a rental. Nothing fancy, Toyota turbo diesel as it was used on a 6week trip. I can't remember the time, i believe it was 11m6s or maybe 12m6s.

Nürburgring Nordschleife Germanlook meet would really be very cool. One of the things I want to do when my bug is finished is to run it on the Nordschleife. Doing that with say another 50 bugs.... WOW!!!
Would give me a good deadline for my build too.... (for next year maybe)

SoCalGL

this is exactly what I was thinking when my build was done... A dream to ship my car (I'm in los angeles) to germany to run the ring with a big group of other VWs.

Hi

that's my plan when I win the lottery, do tour of all the UK and European shows, visit Wolfsburg then ship the car to the US and do all the VW shows, you gotta have a dream.

Do lap times on Forza count?

Yeah, I've got that the other way around. Doing Laguna Seca with my bug. Would probably end upsidedown at the bottom of the corkscrew but hey.... Fun none the less. However, Nürberg is only a few hours drive for me so that's a little bit more of a realistic dream. :)

BTW, this is a bug on the nordschleife (so google says) Not much info though, almost got carsick from the camera :lmao:

I'm the other way around :lmao: Laguna Seca is about an hour from my house but I too want to drive the ring. If everything pans out I'll be over there next summer but my race car will probably stay home. Btw, I've been told that the corkscrew at laguna seca is like turning left into an elevator shaft, dropping 3 floors and then turning right. I haven't driven it yet but I will soon.

Good post Socal!

Obviously I would like to run one day too, but all must be in top notch then, like a roll cage.
I think Matt would like to be there too

CU there (one day),

Hé Humble, please take a video cam with you when you run laguna and post it here. I would love to see a bug take on the corkscrew.
About the ring... how serious could a nordslcheife meet be. Not being pushy, just being very enthusiastic.
Ok, I'll tone down now, being a newby and all.....

From the Nurburgring it is only one hour driving to Bitburg. Maybe we should consider the idea of combining the Nurburgring Nordschleife with for instance DasDragDay @ Bitburg with a couple of guys. Friday, on our way to Bitburg, some runs at the Nordschleife and saturday and sunday at the dragrace track in Bitburg. That would be one hell of a weekend!

Not sure if it would be possible for me this year already, but the combined action could make it more viable for those that come from abroad and/or need to travel further to get there

I've done it in a mk5 GTi (my mate took some footage on my camera phone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hN5VAha8RU )and saw a couple of superbugs in the car park too. I didn't get a chance to talk to the bug owners, so no idea on lap times.

I will be going back there sometime next year (am thinking april or may at this stage) but if a group of you guys are going to be there I will definitely work my trip around it :D

That's a great idea! I'd be up for that. Combining the Nordschleife, with a show, and possibly the new Porsche museum that will be completed soon. :D

What are the big VW shows in Europe?
Do you have any dates?

We can get a "feeler" going to see who's interested.

That's a great idea, Pete. Let's get some '09 dates for EU shows down and start the ball rolling on this. Once we have a good idea on dates we can also hit some other forums, really try and make it an aircooled invasion

Also, don't forget Project 2009 at the 'ring :D, which includes the worlds fastest accelerating roller coaster  YEAH:angry:
There is also Autostadt http://www.autostadt.de which is just near Wolfsburg, on the way to Berlin (coolest city in the world, imho), I haven't had the chance to get there personally, but heard it's a Must See for VW and car fans alike.

September 20th and 21st 2008 is the first time we can combine (http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=d&hl=nl&geocode=&saddr=Houten&daddr=Nurburgring+to:Bitburg&mra=pi&mrcr=1&sll=51.19956,6.176925&sspn=3.104693,6.811523&ie=UTF8&z=7) DasDragDay (Bitburg) and the Nordschleife: http://www.autobahn.be/

More dates of shows in Europe can be found at http://www.vwshows.info/shows.php?year=2008

If you want to see a lot of GermanStyle vw's, you can also combine the VWBugshow (http://www.vwbugshow.be/) (Brustem, Belgium (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=Brustem,+Sint-Truiden,+Belgium&ie=UTF8&ll=50.809189,5.219193&spn=0.048922,0.10643&z=13)) with the Nordschleife (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=nurburgring,+germany&sll=51.559997,5.982056&sspn=1.540167,3.405762&ie=UTF8&ll=50.361233,6.967049&spn=0.098778,0.21286&z=12) (and probably Spa-Francorchamps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=spa-francorchamps&sll=50.361233,6.967049&sspn=0.098778,0.21286&ie=UTF8&ll=50.435587,5.973387&spn=0.024656,0.053215&t=h&z=14)) or Mai-Käfer-Treffen (http://www.kaefertreffen.de/) (Hannover, Germany (http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=hannover&ie=UTF8&ll=52.401162,9.735947&spn=0.188942,0.42572&t=h&z=11)) with Autostadt (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=autostadt,+wolfsburg&sll=50.435587,5.973387&sspn=0.024656,0.053215&ie=UTF8&ll=52.438955,10.791922&spn=0.023598,0.053215&t=h&z=14) and Berlin (http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=berlin&ie=UTF8&ll=52.581357,13.41156&spn=0.376338,0.85144&z=10&iwloc=addr). haha, I think just about every member on this board has a desire to get to the 'ring at one time or another :-D

September sounds good, I can't make it this year, but 2009 I'm DEFINITELY THERE!!!
I've already confirmed it with my Girlfriend, she's up for it as long as there is someone in Nurburg (or nearby village) who can rent her a motorbike... Anyone on here able to find us someone?

I doubt it would take much more than word of mouth to make this an annual post Bitburg Run To The 'ring! :D

Ye-up! She's wicked :-D We also have a couple of race karts that we take out every now and again. Pretty much, anything fast or competitive tends to attract our collective interest.

Thanks for the maps, Aartjan.
I also found the calendar of events for the 'ring for 2008 http://www.nuerburgring.de/events.286.0.html anything listed as touristenfahrten means the Nordschleife (21km northern loop) is open for public use, which is when we would want to go.

Do any of you European guys want to start posting the idea around your EU forums and clubs to see if anyone local is interested?
I'm sure there are plenty of VW owners who don't just want to drive fast in a straight line ;)

Hi,
I did a few laps in the last year. Unfortunately I'm running only 50HP, and a passenger joined my ride, so that it was really hard going uphill ;(
I did something around 11:40mins... Wasn't too fast, but it also wasn't too slow, when you see some guys running their 911's and Ford Focus ST not much faster. With a bit more power I'd caught them :D
What you have to care about: When there are tourist-drives on the Nordschleife, there are rules like on a normal road. So please drive carefully and considerately.
And please excuse my bad english^^
P.S: I'm living about 60 miles away form the Nordschleife :p But the prices which are 21 euros for a single lap keep me off the track

As far as this year goes, I may just try to make a run (or two:D ) on friday 19th september, which is the day before the DasDragDay weekend in Bitburg.
All depending on my schedule and if the engine is holding up through DDD6

Well yes, I've got plans, although my money doesn't like these^^
I think I'm getting for a 80-90HP 1600ccm motor when I can afford it.
Until then the car will be lightened, kind of race style ;)
And there are several other investments on the car which keep me away from having more power :(

Small update and to hope some others join as well.
Friday 19th september from 14:15 hours is still on as far as I am concerned. Hopefully it doesn't rain as that will keep me off the track.
I have the boost turned down to 0.7 bar. Probably still making close to 200 hp which is very enough.
Coming friday shakedown of the endurance of the turbomotor on a trackday at Zandvoort circuit. Fingers crossed.

September 9th 2008, 20:44
Sounds good Wally, you should have heaps of fun!!!
Don't let the rain deter you. It's worth getting out on the track, even if just for a casual tourist drive. The 'ring is like no other road or track in the world, it certainly has it's own spirit & atmosphere that all fans of driving HAVE to experience at least once in their lifetime.
Wish I could be over there to do some laps with you :( I will definately be there in 09 tho!

I want to go back!!!

It was the first long trip with my just finished bug and first time ever that I have driven a car myself on a racetrack. I can tell you, this experience is truly amazing!!

Just like Walter, I did two laps. First lap was mostly driving on the right half of the road, because I am 'slow-traffic' with only a 1600 engine and overtaking only allowed on the left side. I used this lap to explore the track and just enjoy driving on the largest racetrack of this planet. Almost every corner has some slope in it and on some hills I had to run a shorter gear in order to stay climbing. :) Second lap I drove much faster. Roadholding of my bug was quite surprising; on some coupled corners with no straights I even managed to stay after a 911 and circuit-prepared BMW. It was also surprising to see the bodyroll and jumping on the outer wheels of many fast factory cars and driving my bug about the same speed through the corner with only little tyre-screaming.

It's an experience I won't forget. I definately will be there again next year, hopefully with bigger brakes and engine!

Humble: in-car videos are strictly forbidden there, as is keeping running timers in the car and right hand side overtaking.
They have these 'rules' as there are very many accidents with quite some casualties. The Ring authorities are very scared that the many accidents may lead to closure of the Nürburgring by the politicians if accidents and especially casualties go up any further...

So, I didn't intend to give any other cars any run for their money as acting tough can cost you your car, big fines and damage costs to the track (closure because of your oil spillage of your own stupid accident costs up to 1500 euros per hour...) and ultimately lives to yourself and motorists falling by your oil loss.

Having said all that....the track is SOOO unbelievebly nice and some curves are soooo tempting to be taken at some speed/acceleration that I could not resist to push the pedal down where I could see where I went and no traffic was ahead of me. Because of the trackday at Zandvoort the weekend before I knew the engine and car were in great shape and all felt very reliable
And yes, some Audi S6 behind me could hardly gain up on me, but I let him pass anyways and kept behind him the rest of the remaining of the 20 km's track :D Track knowledge is EVERYTHING there, as a lot of the corners cannot be seen untill your almost halfway through it. This is because most are just over the hill when they turn...
The differences in heights is what makes this track so unique imo. At some points the entire car was pushed hard into the shock bump stops on all 4 wheels when going downwards and hard uphill again. You could feel it in your stumich (sp?) and ears.
The carroussel was very special as well, but very bumpy!
I short, the car stuck to the track like glue due to all the mods and wide sticky tires and our 3 beetles had more spectators in the car park than all the GT2,3 RS's Lotus's and whatever had :D

Wow!!! :D

Those pictures came out really well. How did your cars handle The 'ring?
Any memorable on-track moments?

Yeah, unfortunately, I had a 'moment' nevertheless my 'carefull' (not) driving: In the famous 'Adenauer Frost' curve my speed was still way too high and I needed to steer over the rather steep curb sides there :( Luckily, no harm was done and we drove over the side and onto the track again.. pfft.
And this was after the frst lap where I could just brake for this corner and thought to be more carefull for this one next time... That is how dangerous my enthousiasm for 'spirited' driving can be.. Preparation is therefore also very important and if I would have timed the curves or distance for this curve, I would have better anticipated it.
Upside is that all other corners are less threathorous (sp?) and were ultimately fun to drive through.
Pity we couldn't do a WOT down the straight, although a certain new 911 did try to pass me coming up the straight. Well, that was untill I saw him wanting to pass this little bug..hehe, so it was open road, no bends and he didn't pass and had to arrange behind me to exit the Ring halfway the straight :D
Yeah, I was very carefull....:o

While aiting for the TouristenFahren to open, we thought this was a Nissan Skyline, but later i heard it was the new Honda NSX...the sound of it running at topspeed down the straight was breathtaking!:
Turn the sound to max and listen to it:

Thanks Pete, but since you've been there yourself, you know it is not allowed to run a timer in the car as it is to film during driving in order to avoid bravoury.
I really wasn't concerned about a time on a very dangerous track with 73 corners, a lot of them blind over a crest... Add to the fact that your coming onto the track and driving off on the same straight, and you may understand that timing is a bit pointless imho.
There was an olderly gentleman at the car park that had a lot of experience with porsches, even worked on 917's back in the days and did hundreds of laps himself there that said my car could do under 10 minutes...;)

Its just the driver that has no experience...;)

Hard evidence in the form of pictures :D
Well, a low-milage NSX is a very cool car, despite the manufactorer ;)

LOL, unfortunately it must be another Cam that you're thinking of. No NSX's in my driveway.

Then I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding :o

Another TIV engine and replicar enthousiast imported his speedster into Australia in a container he shared with a certain....Cam.

I thought 'how many aussie Cams that are aquinted with another VW/type 4/german enthousiast can there possibly be? Well, there you have it...:o

Sorry mate.
PS I really was a very nice car though!

haha, that's cool. I know the thread that you're talking about. My understanding is that those cars are actually in Dubai - still owned by Australian's (the spyder atleast) though.

Hi to all GL people.

I'm glad this forum works again :D

Nurburgring is 1200 km's from me. I went there few times. The most legendary track in the world.

That's the reason why it's sticker is a first thing I've put on My project car... The Ring' trip will be the first thing I will drive with My car :)

Well, there's two version. You have modern with track path, and this old design they've used before.

Fits Bug nicely :p

I even saw metal plate in the same design (perfect when you place it instead KARMANN sign). Costed 120 euro on ebay

That's a great sticker! I didn't see them when I was there either, although I did get the metal plate version that you mentioned (for when my ghia eventually gets done), 120 euro seems way too much for one though.

I picked up a couple of stickers when I was over there and finally got to use the red one

Here's mine on the Nordschleife. I've got some more pictures, but I think one should be enough ;)
It was made back in 2007, the car looks quite a bit different now :)

^what those guys said... your car looks fantastic.

It seems there are so many great VW's out there that we all have no idea about, it would be cool to organise some way of getting them all together.

I wish you hadn't asked me about my engine... It's a normal 1600 50hp.
If it's ok for you and the mods I will post some more pics here. But I can't do it now, I've got to go to work in a few minutes :(
And thanks to all of you for your nice words, also with the few modifications I've done the car was expensive enough
At the moment it doesnt look as it's shown on the pictures. The "de-chroming process" is running :D and I hope to get some carbon parts over the winter.
When I come back from work I will immediately post a few pics :)

Sweet! How many laps have you done at the Ring?

Not enough :D
Well all in all it should be only about 20 laps. As a student I couldn't do much more  But I watched really many onboard-vids so I know the line a bit. And since I have a job I can hopefully do some more.
The "best" thing is that you aren't the slowest one on the track, also with such low power, if you know the line. I remember a Porsche 911 driver who came to me after I could follow him until "Breidscheid" (which is the lowest part of the Nordschleife). He asked me how much power I have in my VW. When I told him it's only a standard 50hp he stared unbelieving and went away quite quick :D But don't ask me about the following uphill part...

Does anyone have any more info on this beast? Looks very intriguing, he needs to be a GL member!!!
