Looks great Dave! |

I am looking at your head cc information and i am seeing 59cc for one head and 56cc for the other is this correct, isn't this going to pose a problem for you when you try to tune it. By the way nice setup this engine should be nice. Saw on jake's site where he did a 2.4ltr also with a 84mm crank and some 5.9inch rods. The engine made 220HP. Are you using 5.5inch rods on your 82mm crank. |
the final camber volume was 54cc for all 4. The sharpie notes were left on along the way. I should have hit them with some brake part cleaner. My rods are 5.7 with chevy main journals.
|
O.k. great, your rod ratio is 1.76 : 1, good. How wide is the engine? I know for a stock type 1 engine the measurement from the crank center to connecting rod pin center is 211mm. I can't remember if the type 4 is 207mm or 209mm.
So is your engine wider than a stock t4 engine. |
Yes it is wider than stock. I forget how much shim I have under each cylinder. I have it writen in my notes but I am at work right now. It is somewere close to .100" per jug. There is no step in the heads so that ads to the shim size too.

I was able to modify a Scat linkage kit and fab a bracket to mount the center bellcrank to. It looks like it should function better than the other dog legged center pull linkage I have and look cleaner than the hex bar set I have.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...3.jpg~original I also relocated my center console and fitted the new Bug Tech shifter. http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...0.jpg~original I got the engine up on the test stand but when I went to mount the exhaust, it hits the stand frame. I will have to pull the engine back off and re-engineer the test stand frame. That will have to wait as I am back to work tomorrow and then off to Mexico again for a relaxing week in the lap of luxury before Herbie X comes back to us for some upgrades. |
Looks great Dave,
Have a great time in Mexico. Pete |
I like the center console setup, looks sharp. Hows the feel of that shifter?
Herbie X and upgrade are two words I never thought I'd hear together. |
Dont forget! Bottled water and no ice in the drink!
|
The shifter is the bomb. I really like it. Too bad I had just bought a CSP before Markus talked to me about them.
Herbie X comes to visit us on a regular basis. This time it will be for some bigger brakes, a Bug Tech shifter and I think he wants some more horsepower. |

Well I fired it up today and went thru the first 30 minute nail chewing break-in run. the right side carb needs some work but I was not going to stop the break-in for it. I just shut it down and it is cooling off. I will have a look at the lifters after it is good and cooled down. Might bolt on another good set of 45 dells I have before running it again.
It was one of the longest 30 minutes I have been thru. |
I hear you about the nail-biting....
I just broke in my 1915, with straight-cuts and dual springs. And some really sketchy/questionable 1.4 roller rockers. The racket this thing makes is amazing! Especially inside the garage... Hearing all of these rattles and clanks and knocks makes you want to shut it down... But you can't. It needs to break in(!):lmao: |
Hellooooooo :sleep::sleep:
|
Well It has an hour of run time so far. I was pulling the lifters to inspect them and got 2 pair done. I cut my left thumb while doing it. I finished that cylinder, washed the cut out, put some triple antibiotic cream on it and a band-aid on it and went to work that night. The next day it woke me up. Thumb was throbbing and swollen about twice its normal size. Went to the Dr., got a big shot of antibiotic in the a$$ and sent to a hand specialist because it was nasty red from the tip of the thumb well into the hand. It is much better now and I am going for my last (I hope) follow up today at 3:15. You hand is not worth much without a usable thumb.
Moral of the story. Break-in oil with all that ZDDP in a small cut can turn ugly quick. |
sorry double post
|
PICS hehehehe

Thumb is still with me. I has stopped draining so as soon as it has closed up I can get back to it.
|
Good luck with the thumb, hopefully it heals up okay
|
hey Dave , nice to see you are still busy, the car is looking very nice , I am going to start on mine (dry sump ) in the new year
Jonathan |
Last follow up was today and I have a green light to start back. Might get back to it this afternoon.
Jonathan, I hope you dry sump project goes well. Did you get your new ECU sorted out? |

Any news from the holidays?

I need some more shims for the pushrod tubes. When the engine is warmed up, the "O"rings on the outboard ends start to show and oil starts to seep from them. I ordered another set of .132" shims but they are a bit too much so I ordered what I hope will be a set of .040" shims that should do the job. I have over a hour of run time on it and have pulled the lifters after each 30 minutes and they look good. After I get the shims in, I will up my idle jets and get that dialed in and get another hour of run time done before I stab it in the car.

your on.

Cool deal! :woohoo:
|
I did not get PR tube shims in time for this weekend so I did the disc brake upgrade to my son's 73 GL. Also di the front sway bar upgrade. Got everything finished and was putting my tools in my car and had Ryan throw the wheels on so he could try out his new stuff. The wheels hit the calipers so we were done. They are the early wide lip style Riviera's that you see on a few 914's. I guess they are earlier than I thought. I do have a set of 8 spokes that he can run untill he finds a set of 2L Fuchs.
Anyway, I got the PR tube shims in the mail today. My next set of off days should bring some progress. |
To bad the Rivieras don't fit on you son's bug now (I hate eight spokes).
Glad you got the shims already...not long now.:) |
Got a chance to get some more run time on it today. I will inspect the lifters one more time and get some more 93 octane fuel and do a final tune on it, fit the sealing tin and pull it off the test stand.

I moved this to the build section. Thought I would throw in a pic of my transaxle. Its from Rancho and has all the tricks. 3.88 R/P and an 0.82 4th.
|
:woohoo: stab that thing in there, and get it on the road!
|
Good for you, Dave.
|
great car, congratulations! That nakamichi is one of the best units ever :) also lke the shifter, I have the same but haven't tried yet (there is no engine in the car at the moment)
|
Thanks. I picked up the Nakamichi a few years back. I hear that the company has changed ownership. We had a Nakamichi tape deck for years and it was great.
I too love the BugTech shifters and very happy to be selling them here. |

I have been working on tax stuff the last 2 days. But in between, I got my oil lines that will go to the front mounted oil cooler bent and flared. They are heavy walled -8 stainless so I had to take them to Aeroquip Express to have them flared.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...5.jpg~original http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...6.jpg~original I swapped out my carbs for another set of 45 Dells that fixed my remaining carb issues. I put another 30 minutes of run time on the engine and pull the lifters one more time to inspect them for proper break-in ware. 2 hours of run time on the test stand and 3 lifter inspections later and i am ready to fit some sealing tin to it and get it ready to stab in the car. |
Sounds good so far, get some video of the motor once you get it in :)
