After the headliner, the windows, rubbers and scrapers were put in place. Trims are genuine aluminium and not the common aluminium look-a-like plastic ones. Hope they will last for years.

I had a little issue with the spacer that was included in the kit. The pads didn't allowed them to fit well so some machining was required. Not a big deal but surprising in case of such a nice and expensive kit, that should be 100% plug and play. Can't find the pics of this, but will upload asap. http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/12/f%C3%A9k1.jpg http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/12/f%C3%A9k2.jpg Fills out nicely the 16" wheel but not too fancy from outside. http://sleepair.freeblog.hu/files/2012/12/f%C3%A9k3.jpg |
Worked an other weekend on the car..
installed 4 of the 6 gauges http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...c.jpg~original as well as the Bug-Tech shifter http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...8.jpg~original http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...8.jpg~original Shift knob looks good on it. The same logo can be found in centre of my steering wheel. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...4.jpg~original |
Having access to the battery area and back seats is not easy if you have bucket seats. These mounts are based on a Weichers frame (oiginally for Opel Corsa A) that required some fabrication to fit.

I managed to find a set of 25.5mm torsion bars from a 944 M030, I hope they will be fine with the "heavy" type4 in the back. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...c.jpg~original http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...b.jpg~original Berg-style mid mount: http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...6.jpg~original http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...d.jpg~original Would be better to put in front, but the previous owner used a similar mount, thus he has already changed the bolts to longer ones, but this way :-/ So I need the rubber mounts to be releasable otherwise tranny can't be taken out. |
Installed the cup brace as well. 3 braces weight 1 kg together, while the 6 little ears weight nearly 2 kgs! Due to weight reduction and aestetichs the ears were cut a bit.

However the Rancho unit is already machined to accept a bigger flywheel, the 228mm is still too big, so we had no choice...it is still not OK, when all the screws are tightened the engine won't turn around  next time I'll figure it out.

Has any of you ever changed the pilot bearing in the type4 crankshaft to accept better the input shaft of the type1 tranny? It seems just too short for me..thanks
|
i just left mine in the crank. i drilled out my flywheel to accept a new pilot bearing.

Hi
Just buy a new pilot bearing from any air cooled VW, there all the same size and have the flywheel centre turned to accept it. Steve |

An other how to question, this time about the front oil cooler. Tubes will go under the chassis, but still not sure about the front area. I want to put them as high as possible without interfering with the suspension parts. Any ideas are welcome (picture worth more than thousand words). Thanks |

Original Porsche fabric is $$$ and none of them is for my taste, but tons of other colors are available. Finally I chose the original "Royal tartan", this package arrived from the UK a few days ago. Can't wait to see it. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...5.jpg~original http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...6.jpg~original |
A bit off topic, but you might be interested in. A local oldtimer show with very different cars. Will upload my pics as will.

An other weekend passed without working on the car, but we had great fun on a local trackday. I was co-driver in the Z4 and we were chasing friend's 1303  Both cars are daily drivers, the bug performed very well!

Got the seats back, I really like how they turned out:

A lot lighter than other oprions :D |
I figured out the pilot bearing and the bell house issue as well, it was time to put the enigne back to it's place

Didn't like it on the roll, but it looks very Golf GTI on the seats. Going to look really smart when done

Very nice! Seats and wheels came out great :)

Wheels came out awesome!
|
Hi
The wheels look great. What is your car colour called? With those seats you should get a Scottish ringtone LOL They look really good and go with the car colour. Steve |
Thank you guys for the comments!
Sorry for the crappy phone pictures, I'll make better ones next time. The seats looks more vivid in real, and I feel this tartan theme period correct as not just the GTI but also Porsche used plaid fabric in the '70s (bigger checks would be even better) http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZHOLsQsz8a...aid-fabric.png http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3PIekOgngX...1236783840.jpg Steve, you were just kidding but not my girlfriend  :D http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--e5i128D82...0/P4160013.JPG Btw, colour is Kasan Red (L30B), an original one for '71-'72 or '72-'73. It will be fully polished when fenders are on. |
car has really turned out steller so far. i love the plaid on the seats. so much that i now need to recover my seats...lol. keep up the awesome work man.

I gave up with plastic fenders and started to make my owns from metal. They weight a lot more than fiberglass, but at least can be custom widened.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EHU24mt8sc...801_170204.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OJWHBXFv22...801_170215.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1IzGbGMdTX...801_170157.jpg With current wheels it needs +2 cm in front, +5 in rear. Thanks for Ricola for the useful infos on his website, it helped a lot. |
To make it as strong as possible the extra piece was hammered to a "hat shape" so it attaches under the fender's edge on both side. The outer side of the rear fender had to be shorten to keep the original shape and to line up with the running board.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Mmv7j5g_d9...829_165158.jpg Btw the +5 cm should be over on the limit where stock running boards can be used, at least mine looked awful (no pictures). The front section of the fender was sliced up again and got a "V" shape so the bottom edge is near to stock now and it looks ok to me. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L4vHcGzKEM...916_163956.jpg After the second test fit it was good enough to go ahead, time to extend the bumper brackets (30mm) to clear the fenders. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mTFoftTBPe...920_134025.jpg This is it for now, I hope I get them back from the painter in a few days/weeks. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SycgJEhreg...920_133912.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P0e2ykv6VI...920_140708.jpg I will have to relocate the rear lights once the fenders are ready |
