Ok its been ages since Iposted any pics life's been HECTIC to say the least.

Some pics are old but this is how the build has roughly progressed.

After this pic was taken the car went off to have the subaru engine conversion bodged up and thrown in by the UK's so called Subaru Engine Conversion Specialists:angry::angry::angry:.Fast forward and after the interior was fitted and the car was road tested the gremiln's started to raise their ugly heads. And trust me there where tons of them..:angry::angry::angry:......Fast forward again and after some successful legal action and money back my way the engine has been pulled. And all the other crap they fitted has been removed from the car.

looks impressive so far. you have done a ton of work. some of the build pics remind me of my build. you will definitely keep us up to date on the scooby conversion. i have a personal interest in that as i am currently considering either that or a 2056 type 4 for my daughters 62 Germanlook

Hi there a lots of scooby conversions out there, also some on this site have been done extremely well, check out Ricola,Steve c and Vw 1303 all builds on this site. Also VWKD website has lots of info.

Another part I have been dreaming of owning for ages arrived a few months ago my G50 Porsche box :D:D:D:D:D:D.I brought this off a Porsche breaker here in the UK.Two weeks after buying it the guy calls me back to tell me a friend of his has a brand new Quaife Diff sitting in his garage. After a quick call I whizz over to his place and almost pulled his arm off for it @ £500 one of the best bargains I have had so far for the build :D:D:D:D.Few months later and the box was dropped off to a friend of a friend at a well known Rally Car builders and the diff is fitted.

Steve C October 26th 2013 05:29

Hi

I have a Quaife in my G50 as well, very happy with it. The Porsche guy that fitted it said that the Porsche guys don't like them.

Steve

spannermanager October 26th 2013 13:06

Torsen diffs have no over run locking or pre load, generally true but not quite , as the very latest Motorsport quaifes do have adjustable pre load pads, not sure if they are for sale yet tho, all plate type diffs have over run locking ramps, preferred by many for racing, all lsd's have pros and cons whatever the type.

graham October 28th 2013 21:07

Ive heard good reports on the quaife lsd for street use, some people saying its one of the best mods for drivability.Others sware by the diff made by a company called Guard but apparently these are better for track use and even more money than the quaife one:shocked:.Anyways hopefully the diff will be worth the extra expense.I gave the box a good scrub and a bit of a polish :D

Steve C October 28th 2013 23:41

Hi

The guy that fitted my Quaife reckons a normal plate type LSD would be too vicious in a bug, plus they cost a lot more. He prepares Porsche cup cars so he knows a bit about them

I figure that they are stronger than an open diff that my G50 had.

Steve

ricola October 29th 2013 15:38

I have to say the locking up on over-run is the best bit of the plate LSD on my bug, it's has transformed it from scarey on lift off to a car that stays stable..

graham October 31st 2013 03:07

The diff I have fitted is the ATB torque biasing type that has no plates.I am not sure it will be as useful as a plate type diff when you lift off the gas but it does have other benefits. This is quite a complex subject with many pros and cons.http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...p/t-72684.html

Hopefully though it will be a better car all round than just having the standard diff.

Thanks for your comments fellas.

Steve C October 31st 2013 18:36

Hi Rich

What sort of speeds did you find the benefits?, I've only run up to about 164 kmh on race track and the car seemed very stable.

Steve

ricola November 1st 2013 09:06

It wasn't about the speed, it was all to do with the rate of deceleration, might have been worse with mine as it is relatively softly sprung..

Ok so I am getting geared up again to get started on the car again.I thought I would post up some pics to get some help and advice on what should ideally happen for the engine gearbox install.I currently have the torsion tube in place but his is going to need cutting to fit the long nose g50.I am thinking about building a cradle/frame over the long nose end like Steve C's build on here with possibly a box type frame tying into the cage at the front of the frame horns and then adding a rear engine cradle mount for the Subaru engine mounts like Ricola's (blatantly copying there designs but there cleverer then me :D ).I want to tie the whole lot to the cage so any suggestions on designs would be apreciated. Also I am thinking about using a bell housing strap ? like Wallys copy copy, again sorry fellas but I like all the mods that you've done on your cars and I think a combination of your designs would be a great way to install the engine and gearbox.Another thought is a brace under the torsion tube to strengthen it all up ? Also I have a rear anti roll bar fitted, would this be in the way or would the gearbox over sail this ?

What do ya reckon fellas any additional input advice or suggestions are really welcome ? Once again sorry for the copy cat approach here but I think this seems the best way as these are kind of tried and tested methods.
I will be fitting the better racers edge lower shock bolts than those in the pics.

If anyone is reading this who've I have mentioned above would you have done anything different ? I will have to have this work done professionally as I don't have the skills myself so I want to get it right.Once again thanks for all the inspirational builds that exist on this site they do keep me keen and motivated. Not sure if anyone is reading this but if you are thanks in advance Graham.

Any thoughts ???

ricola July 6th 2014 17:01

I thought about having some sort of frame over the trans which also tied in to the top damper mounts but space was very tight, turns out my design is very rigid as it is so that's how I would do it again! In a saloon you may be able to do it in thinner gauge and add the bracing as a more weight efficient solution...

a few mods I managed to get done before I went away on holiday.
I removed the fuel tank corners as it had taken a wack and I thought they would look neater shaped before
after
http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/...e.jpg~original
added some holes prior to welding in plate for added fuel capacity and a 12 mm fuel outlet

I managed to give the tank a good clean with marine clean, next step is metal ready and then the inside of the tank is having a coat of Por 15 tank sealer.Shortened oil pick up with added section just in case the sump takes a hit

modified sump.cant take the credit for this design as I copied Ricloas idea [IMG]

The car is with Jim Smith at www.cotsweld.co.uk he is fitting the Porsche G50 along with a few other bits.

Here is Jim's race car that he stuck in the wall at Santa Pod  its now having having a tweakhttp://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/...p.jpg~original

graham August 23rd 2015 05:12

Jim at Cotsweld fitted the cage in my car and is well known in the UK for his roll cage work and fabrication. The cage in my car is like a work of art :D.Here's another pic of Jim's Race car.

After I dropped the car off at Cotsweld I took the engine and a ton parts to Darren at Dccustoms.co.uk.
Darrens going to fit the engine and finish it all off :D

Here is Darren's 650 bhp scooby powered race car.I will let the pictures do the talking.

Jim has also fabricated some sturdier seat mounts as the ones from the trimmers where not up to scratch.

graham October 2nd 2015 03:57

Progress continues as Jim at Cotsweld works his magic and gets the G50 in place.

He has really put some thought into this and I am Chuffed with how its going

The pictures show how he has overcome the long nose cone, I thought this would of been a real pain but as you can see its pretty trick.

In addition to this I now have a nice access panel underneath, a solid mounted front mount and some extra bracing off the body/cage :D

Why solid mount, isn't this a street car? Even when people solid mount a lot of the time they won't do the front as there is much less flex in the mountings which leads to cracked nosecones...

effvee October 2nd 2015 10:52

Good morning, was the torsion bar/housing cut away? Was your engine/trans raised any. Will you be using a lessor poundage torsion bar, along with coil overs?. I think your model of G-50 may be longer than Walter's, from the look of your tailshaft housing. Have you seen Walter's picture of comparison and measurement of his 915 verses the G50. How much more in length will your engine be rearward than its original location. The reason for my questions are,I am toying with the idea of a subaru EZ30. By it being a 6 cylinder, rear apron clearances I need to be mindful of.

Very nice work.

I say solid mounted more as a figure of speech rather than it is actually solid mounted, so i have retained the large front bushing and the Porsche cross member thats welded to the frame horns mount will have some bushings added.Do you think this could still present problems Rich ?

Yes torsion housing was cut.
Trans was moved 70 mm forward and 50 mm up.
no torsion bar, coilers in the region of 450-500 lbs and a uniball kit made by member a on here, Alex.
My g50 will sit rearwood in the same position as the original gearbox.

From memory Walter has a short nose g50, so that plus the fact that he has had the first rib of his g50 machined off enabled him to get the g50 in without cutting the torsion tube. Also walter obviously has a wild air-cooled lump and the suggestion of putting a subaru engine in his car would send his blood pressure through the roof :lmao::lmao:.Thats my basic understanding on his instal but please check as my knowledge on most things is very limited and only gained from hours of reading on forums wich can lead to confusion as there are so many differing opions/projects.I am pretty sure as well that on the face of it the h6 looks like a great swap but the 2 or 2.5 litre ej20 engines are a better bet. They are more widely available have tons more tuning options and i think they are marginally shorter. As I say these are my basic understandings so do your own research.Check out other forum members rides inc Ricola's, Steve c and obviously Walter's, all these guys are helpful, approachable, knowledgeable and millions of times better placed to advise than me.
Unfortunately my knowledge and experience of building cars is limited to just this one and for the most part I'm stumbling around in the dark most of the time with my build and get pointed in the right direction by other members who kindly tolerate me

ricola October 3rd 2015 05:13

Sounds fine Graham.. Yours is in the same position as mine if what we discussed has been followed through, ie bellhousing about 70 and 50mm up from VW position. The H6 is -.7" longer than a 4 so depending exactly where that length is (height wise) you could juggle how much the trans is moved to get it to fit easily enough. There's no way it will go in without cutting the torsion housing

That gearbox is mohoooosive!!! Nice work though getting it in there. Your car is coming along well. Obviously I'm more partial to a Ty754 as its loads smaller then that G50 and probably cost half as much. Although I did spank a lot of money changing my 915 out. I'm much happier now with mine.

Keep up the good work and we need more pictures!!!

Yeah Kai, the g50 is a bit of a beast but I was lucky enough pick it up with 70 k on it with a brand new Quaife diff for £2250 :D. The diff alone is around £1200. I know thats a lot of dosh but it's also a lot of kit. A built bus box from bears was coming out at £3000  but obviously the fitting for me has been pricey as I haven't done the work myself. Also there is the adapter plate etc to factor in. If I where to do it again I would of considered the reversed Suabru r/p.Having said that I am more than pleased with what I have chosen and It will easily handle any future power upgrades if I ever plan them. Also Judging buy other peoples experiences with the G50 I am confident that its going to be a great choice, I just can't wait to use it :D

Hows your Notchback Kai ???

The full conversion from 915 to Subaru gearbox cost me £3000. But that was to supply everything needed to swap them out plus all the Gucci frills such as the quaiffe diff, lightened flywheel, of course the new ring and pinion but also a starter motor and clutch slave. It cost me £550 for a supplied gearbox fitted with the subarugears kit. I had my 944 shafts shortens. Had them friction welded which was interesting to learn about. They're lasted a few burn outs and I'm confident they're strong enough for the time being. I'm aiming for 320bhp with the scooby as that's a sensible figure with a stock engine. Can't be bothered to build an engine as they cost loads of money. Used ones are £400. No brainier really haha.

Generally the notch has not done much this year. My front beam has way too much play in it for me to bother MOTing it. And type 3 beams, the parts are not as readily available as a type 1 beam. Also I lowered the front end which makes the car look awesome but it's been a pig to drive. Rear shocks are buggered also. I'm gonna inject some cash into it over winter and get it up and running for next season. I'm also having the usual wheel dilemma going on also lol. I want to get it to the stage I'm happy to drive it as my daily driver. I didn't touch it for 5 months, went at it with the key and it chugged into life instantly. Well Chuffed with my Subaru conversion.

The work your getting done it looking lovely. How do you estimate
Until It's back on the road?
