Really? I thought they were H4s for the regular head lamps, H3s for the fog lights (Cabrio only), and something else for the high beams. Very interesting.

A Sealed Beam HID upgrade kit should fit fine in a stock bucket. Mine fit fine in my 58 beetle. My HID bulbs sit in a little black box, that reflects off the back of the sealed unit, then through the front lens then my Bosch lenses. I'm lucky to get a kit that utilizes sealed beam technology. I couldn't imagine making my own out of projectors like some of the guys on here...good job :agree:

I had H4 HID converstion on my 1999 Galant attached are pics. I also asked the question Projector vs My regular headlight housing I was told by my sponser there is not much of a difference just the consentration of the beam is stronger for a projections housing. The benefits are still there for an HID regeardless of the housing.

Time to bring back a nice issue:

I just saw the pics of Hugo's beetle (yeah the one getting the rorty's chassis and v8 powerplant) and from what i saw he is running HIDs. If Im wrong correct me.

I didnt want to ruin your thread so i believe that it would be nice if you could enlighten us a bit on this thread. Im asking this since you re the only one ive seen with HIDs in upright headlamps

hugovw1976 July 8th 2005 15:38

Yes I have HID with hi/low.

I am taking from BMW 330i.

I put all in the unit. hi/low beam, turn signal (blue), side marker (amber)

But I have to cut the fender, for the projector.

some pics.

Those turned out great, I love the black background.

Hi

I was moving some stuff around in my dungeon today so I dragged my headlight box out and did a mockup. This is what the Xenon lights should look like under early Beetle headlight glasses.

HID - on a 85er Jubi

Hey Guys!

I use the new clear headlights with H4 - and I wanna give my bug XENON - does anybody know a Internetadress, where I can get these changeable sets from H4 - on XENON??

Thanks a lot.

Yours 1200jubi

Quik February 18th 2006 03:35

hey guys, newbie here, but I found this a while back while searching for HID's for my early fenders...

7 in HID lights

no offense to you guys who've done it the hard way, but as I've noticed that all the VW lights are 7 in sealed beams, why not just grab a pair of these and install them like stock lights? They're actually made for police motorcycles, but I don't see why they can't be used on our VWs... :agree:

ricola February 18th 2006 05:31

$1000 for a pair and they aren't even bi-xenons. Projectors also change the looks. I prefer the quality aspect of fitting OEM parts that you will be able to get replacement parts for in the future too..

Rich

Quik February 18th 2006 14:43

I found them on the manufacturer's website for less...

J.W. Speaker site

How hard would it be to convert it to bi-xenon?
just a thought...

ricola February 18th 2006 14:52

Bi-xenons have a seperate solenoid operated flapper in front of the light so too complicated to DIY.

Lazarus February 19th 2006 00:41

also from what i can see thats just the price of the light assembly. thats not counting the balast/ starter. which is another $280. that seems steep for a bright light.

Quik February 19th 2006 02:18

"The Model 8100 is more than just a headlight replacement. It is a whole new lighting system that includes the headlight, bulbs, starter, ballast, wires and waterproof control module."

straight from the product spec sheet from their website... Hey, I'm not tryin' to force it on anybody, I was only tryin' to help out other guys who perhaps aren't as savvy as SteveC and Hugovw1976...

honestly, I think what Hugo's got = amazing and Steve's setup l00ks like it's gonna be totally sweet. And if they'd be willing to, at some point I'd ask 'em if they'd be interested in doin' a set for my bug when it's at that stage... but until I found germanlook.com last night, I hadn't heard hide or hair about anyone VW tryin' to go the HID route. I don't consider myself tech savvy enough with that type of electronics to tackle a job like that, so it seemed the logical route to me... sry if I stepped on anybody's toes by finding the "easy way out"... :bashful:

Lazarus February 19th 2006 14:31

no way dude. i had no idea that was a complete kit. in that case thats a good price. i was looking for the balast and other stuff on thier site and all i found was the 12v and 24v balast so i thought you had to purchase those seperatly. i may actually look into that for my 1303. i love the way those look at night. and youre right about stevec and hugo those setups are awesome. :agree: so what im trying to say is it was my mistake and i was wrong. :bawling:

Hi

I saw Hyosung motorcycle on the road today, it looked like it had HID headlights that may be suitable to fit into a Beetle headliht.

Steve

FeralBug December 25th 2006 15:13

Ive seen 7" HID replacement units for H2 Hummers. They are expensive but may work.

http://www.h2source.com/del-hid.htm

Steve C December 26th 2006 09:15

Hi

Those Hummers units are pricey. I was under the impression that HIDs didn't like to be switched on for short periods of time, that's why most cars only have HIDs on low beam.

is that liquid acrylic you used to flatten the headlight surface and to mount the projector?

FeralBug January 2nd 2007 18:55

I have also seen that Saleen sells an HID upgrade for about $899 for the new Ford Mustangs.

They are a 7" unit, but they are not sealed....I don't know if that is something that can be modified by putting a lense cover on the front.

I was trying to figure out if it could work...any one know anything about non sealed units and if they can be modified to work?

http://www.saleen.com/hid.htm

the actual light fixture and housing are separate pieces, so only the 7" unit will be used.

I worked with a good friend of mine on a setup for his oval. He designed the bezels and I machined them from 8" aluminum. He used Bora golf MK4 projectors with phillips ballasts and 4100k bulbs. All the goodies fit inside the headlight bucket, so you can keep the luggage area clean. The light cut-off is really clean and straight.

Absolutely! I love bullet turn signals on a bug already but that ride is extra nice.

The incorporation of the headlights is stunningly clean. Just beautiful.

defcon May 16th 2007 17:35

will these fit on a 1303 79 vert?

if so, i plan to do HID projectors and black housing

I don't see why not. A 1303 'vert uses a seven-inch headlamp.

Chris Percival May 17th 2007 09:40

Demon Tweeks here in the UK do HID kits where the bulb fits any H4 lamp socket.

Panelfantastic May 17th 2007 15:00

Hey Lanner, who's bus is that in the background?;)

I would be curious to see how the HIDs look down the road through the fluted lenses? I guess you're saying it has a decent pattern?

My alternative

Not HID, but something similar. I got these 7' sealed beam replacement projector headlights with a halo ring for AU$150 a pair. I think they use a H$ bulb. They will fit into a standard US Spec headlight housing:-

HID Lights

Steve,

Someone on AVD posted up a link to them on ebay:-

The seller has listed another set too at AU$150

Flintstones August 10th 2008 08:52

I spoke to the guy that's selling these as I was interested in buying these myself and the problem with those lights is that there is no provision for Hi-beam and for a beetle renders these useless unfortunately.......
have you got them as yet? does it look like you can make them work for Hi-beam??
Cheers

tkdstud August 10th 2008 20:39

I have been looking at one of these kits dont know much about them but they look decent. http://kbrowncustoms.bigcartel.com/p...it-single-beam
