$15 is a great price for that oil cooler. I will probably be coming up the 18th so if you need some help just let me know. If we can get both your car and Zens car in the same place we can make sure that both of them are ready for the show. :D
Check out the brakes also. They have some very nice 4 piston calipers on them. You might want to grab them if they will sell them to you cheap enough. |
I don't think Zen will be ready to stuff his engine by the weekend. Jake is still waiting for DTM shroud blank so he can cut it for 2L heads. If you want to stop by the south side and finish up the Black car we can do it. I will be working tonght thu Thurs night so I will not have time for much untill Fri.
|
I'd be happy to help :) just let me know if you're going to need extra help.
Mike |
dave, i took friday off. so barring having to play Mr. Mom (which i don't think i have to), i can come down there and help too.
as dave said, i am out of the race. the engine is sitting on hold until a shroud shows up. it got lost in shipping. :bawling: sucks, but the 951 ain't a bad back up. just have to change my rims back out and clean her up. |
I finished pulling the cooler from the RX7 this morning (got rained out and couldn't finish Mon.)
Got 2 days (have to work both days too) to clean it up so I can get it mounted on Fri and get a little drive time with it. I have Fri. Sat nights off. |
Dave, good luck with the install, hope it is ready for Saturday. :agree:
|
I got it apart and cleaned when I woke up today. I will have to pick up some bracket material for the fans and mounting brackets. I also need to test the thermostat.
|
I picked up some bracket stock and tested the RX7 cooler thermostat(checks good). I also took apart the old fan brackets so when I get up tomorrow I will start the fab./installation/electrical. Then try to get some road time to test it all. Then I still have to clean the car up, it is kind-a nasty right now.
|
Glad to hear everything sounds to be working out. :agree:
Mike |
Dave,
Your car kinda nasty looks better than most at their best |
Well the cooler is in and it seems to be cooling great. As we(Boygenius and I) were driving thru Stockbridge we lubricated the aft drivers underside of the car and a short section of hwy 138 when the line to the cooler blew off. The lines to the RX7 cooler are slightly larger than 1/2" so after a trip to the 24 hr. Auto Zone with no joy we will try to find a pair of 5/8 barbed fittings to properly connect the RX7 lines to the rest of the system at Home Depot in the morning. If I can't find then I will be up in the Beater Bug.
|
Dave, after I made that post about coming over I didn't check for your response, I went to bed. and I didn't realize how far you were from the show or I would have planned to leave sooner, like thursday morning  The Wellesley Inn was great. fridge, stove, dishes... like a mini apartment, for the night. I would have liked to come help. I'll plan better next time, hopefully you won't be needing the help. but if so, I'll be there. :agree:
Mike |
Don't worry about it Mike. I had plenty of help. Just needed the right parts. I could have had 50 people here and the out come would have been the same. I should have had the thing in a day earlyer but I had to work.
|
did you have any RUDE neighbors asking you to stop all the loud noise after midnight? :D if not great neighbor hood! ;) Zen needs to get into a place like that!
|
I understand you needed the right parts, to do the job right, but I still would have liked to help, and hang out too. Maybe next time.

Nope, no bitchy nieghbors. But the "High Pressure Line and Fitting Ferry" didn't visit us either. I like out in the sticks compared to Zen.
You are welcome to come by and help out any time Mike. I had plenty of Brats, chips, beer and 10W40 to go around. |

The Volvo coolers blew! Jess, how much oil pressure are you running there?
Dang, sorry about that. I thought those coolers were the cats meow for a Beetle install. I wonder if the Volvos have some pressure limiter before the cooler that I am unaware of, or thermovalve where they do not get a jolt of cold thick oil? The RX-7 coolers are great. I got my adapters from www.mazdatrix.com for the 10AN lines. Not cheap fittings but the only game in town that I know of. The problem is mounting the huge thing in a Beetle. Good Luck Dave! |

I didn't think $9.50 each is bad if you figure out what it would cost to get some fittings TIG welded in place. |
Well Hello Pillow. I have tried to call you several times to see whats up.
Most engines regulate the oil pressure at the pump but a VW engine uses the press. relief pistons/springs in the case so if you full flow out of the pump to the filter, cooler, etc, the pressure is unregulated from the pump. A tight fresh engine and 30mm pump pushing 20x50 was too much for the Volvo coolers. they lasted about 20 sec. each. I found some 90 deg. AN fittings at AeroQuip in Forest Park for $17 ea. with a sealing jam-nut to seal against the cooler. I will have to AN the rest of the system. |
With the oil cooling system in a holding pattern I got around to mounting the $30 yard sale MSD Soft Touch. I had no room in the engine bay to mount it so I mounted it on the subwoofer cabinet behind the back seat and routed the wires thru the fire wall with a gromet to seal it off.
|
I forgot to mention that with the Mazdatrix adapters (never figured out the real manufacturer - Earls or Areoquip) but they are steal and narrow... So I hogged them out to 1/2" myself :)
True AN seems to be the only way to go even though it adds up $ :( I usually go to Kennesaw to a place called Fast Lane that specializes in dirt track cars. A mailorder warehouse that carries most all the Aeroquip stuff on the rack. Dave (or anybody interested) give me a call straight to my cell at 703-609-2642 as I am never home to get any messages. Take Care, |
The AeroQuip Express place in Forest Part is close to me and they make lines, I found the BPT fittings for the Volvo coolers there $10 ea. If anyone needs a set for a Volvo cooler I got some (cheap). The AeroQuip 18mmX1.5 to AN fittings for the RX7 cooler are steel 90 deg. and have a sealing jam nut that seals to the cooler with an "O" ring and packing/washer. They have them in -8 and -10. I just need to save up some $$ to get all the stuff. They have reusable AN hose end fittings with the thread on collar so you can make your own lines and replace the hose if you need to so you only buy the ends once. Let's see, 6 of those, 2 of the 90 deg. 18mm to -10 AN's, 4 3/8 npt to -10 AN's and hope the 1/2 inch WeatherHead hose I have will work with the hose end AN fittings. :bawling:
I have driven the car twice and have the craving to spank a pimped-out Ricer or 5L Stang like a cheap Ho on Role-Play night, "SMACK"----Who's-Yo-Daddy-----"SMACK"----WHOOOOOOOO's-YO-DAAAAADDY. Oh.....Uh......Sorry bout that. Did I mention how hard this engine pulls and how sweet the Dells sound back there, whistling out their tune when you crack the taps open. GRRRRRRRR I want to drive it. |
I do denote withdrawl symptoms Dave. Better do some burn-outs pretty quick.
...cheap ho on role-play night... Damn! |
No oil plumbing = No burn-outs = No Role Play Night.

I fully agree with that. :D |
Dave check out the Aeroquip "Push-Loc" line of hoses and fittings. Just as good (for our needs at least) and is less money. Granted every 5 years or so I would recommend replacing the lines as they are rubber (or whatever fancy words they try to make it out to be) inside instead of teflon.
For the record I have seen the teflon core ones start to leak after many years use as well. You are so close... Just buy the stuff! Credit or home equity or sell a child! Just do it! Burn outs that is :) Good Luck! |
I am letting it sit for a week or two. My wife started working last week(well school for her new job). It will take a while to build our savings back up and such. We didn't think it would take this long for her to find a good job.
