Nurburgring Lap Times!
after watching this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dcw7MqsGbE
I started wondering if anyone here has ever run the ring with there bug and what kind of lap times they got? if you have run your bug or know anyone who has post it up! I wanna see how good our GL's are doing on this infamous track! |
Check out this clip, Sabine in the Ring Taxi:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BeDK...eature=related I've driven the Ring in a rental. Nothing fancy, Toyota turbo diesel as it was used on a 6week trip. I can't remember the time, i believe it was 11m6s or maybe 12m6s. The car: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...5.jpg~original The track: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...1.jpg~original The 16euro a lap "ATM" :D http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...3.jpg~original Fun: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...5.jpg~original http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...8.jpg~original http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...7.jpg~original http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...1.jpg~original http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...3.jpg~original http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/...0.jpg~original I'd love to go back! Nurburgring Norschleife, Germanlook meet? Pete |
Nürburgring Nordschleife Germanlook meet would really be very cool. One of the things I want to do when my bug is finished is to run it on the Nordschleife. Doing that with say another 50 bugs.... WOW!!!
Would give me a good deadline for my build too.... (for next year maybe) |
this is exactly what I was thinking when my build was done... A dream to ship my car (I'm in los angeles) to germany to run the ring with a big group of other VWs.
|

that's my plan when I win the lottery, do tour of all the UK and European shows, visit Wolfsburg then ship the car to the US and do all the VW shows, you gotta have a dream. Do lap times on Forza count? Steve |

BTW, this is a bug on the nordschleife (so google says) Not much info though, almost got carsick from the camera :lmao: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dp68...eature=related |
I'm the other way around :lmao: Laguna Seca is about an hour from my house but I too want to drive the ring. If everything pans out I'll be over there next summer but my race car will probably stay home. Btw, I've been told that the corkscrew at laguna seca is like turning left into an elevator shaft, dropping 3 floors and then turning right. I haven't driven it yet but I will soon.
|
Good post Socal!
Obviously I would like to run one day too, but all must be in top notch then, like a roll cage. I think Matt would like to be there too  CU there (one day), Walter |
Hé Humble, please take a video cam with you when you run laguna and post it here. I would love to see a bug take on the corkscrew.
About the ring... how serious could a nordslcheife meet be. Not being pushy, just being very enthusiastic. Ok, I'll tone down now, being a newby and all..... |
Hi
I just heard that Racetaxi is running there on the 1st weekend in August. Steve |

Not sure if it would be possible for me this year already, but the combined action could make it more viable for those that come from abroad and/or need to travel further to get there  |
I've done it in a mk5 GTi (my mate took some footage on my camera phone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hN5VAha8RU )and saw a couple of superbugs in the car park too. I didn't get a chance to talk to the bug owners, so no idea on lap times.
I will be going back there sometime next year (am thinking april or may at this stage) but if a group of you guys are going to be there I will definitely work my trip around it :D |

What are the big VW shows in Europe? Do you have any dates? We can get a "feeler" going to see who's interested. Pete |
Quote:
Also, don't forget Project 2009 at the 'ring :D, which includes the worlds fastest accelerating roller coaster  YEAH:angry: There is also Autostadt http://www.autostadt.de which is just near Wolfsburg, on the way to Berlin (coolest city in the world, imho), I haven't had the chance to get there personally, but heard it's a Must See for VW and car fans alike. Cam |

More dates of shows in Europe can be found at http://www.vwshows.info/shows.php?year=2008 If you want to see a lot of GermanStyle vw's, you can also combine the VWBugshow (Brustem, Belgium) with the Nordschleife (and probably Spa-Francorchamps) or Mai-Käfer-Treffen (Hannover, Germany) with Autostadt and Berlin. The European Bug-In is another big show, but mostly cal-look orientated. |
Wow!
Damn what did i start... i have a feeling in a couple month the ring is gonna be over run with VW's ....this is awesome!!! lets make it happen guys ...again im in Los angeles so for me its a bit different but it'd be awesome to see all of you representing GL for the world there!..make us proud boys..make ..us..proud!
|
haha, I think just about every member on this board has a desire to get to the 'ring at one time or another :-D
September sounds good, I can't make it this year, but 2009 I'm DEFINITELY THERE!!! I've already confirmed it with my Girlfriend, she's up for it as long as there is someone in Nurburg (or nearby village) who can rent her a motorbike... Anyone on here able to find us someone? I doubt it would take much more than word of mouth to make this an annual post Bitburg Run To The 'ring! :D |
lucky bastard
wait so ur girl rides a bike!...O i am so going to australia to find a girl for some reason every girl in LA that I know can't even get her fricken liscense!
hell i just had my ex call me 6 months after we broke to tell me she's getting her permit cuz she knew i was just sick of driving her! |
Ye-up! She's wicked :-D We also have a couple of race karts that we take out every now and again. Pretty much, anything fast or competitive tends to attract our collective interest.
Thanks for the maps, Aartjan. I also found the calendar of events for the 'ring for 2008 http://www.nuerburgring.de/events.286.0.html anything listed as touristenfahrten means the Nordschleife (21km northern loop) is open for public use, which is when we would want to go. Do any of you European guys want to start posting the idea around your EU forums and clubs to see if anyone local is interested? I'm sure there are plenty of VW owners who don't just want to drive fast in a straight line ;) |
He doesn't drive in a straight line...:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=YlqaUt...eature=related Sorry for the OT, but the above is whats its all about fro me. Totally wicked and stealth looking superbeetle driving the doors of a track-911 :D |
Hi,
I did a few laps in the last year. Unfortunately I'm running only 50HP, and a passenger joined my ride, so that it was really hard going uphill ;( I did something around 11:40mins... Wasn't too fast, but it also wasn't too slow, when you see some guys running their 911's and Ford Focus ST not much faster. With a bit more power I'd caught them :D What you have to care about: When there are tourist-drives on the Nordschleife, there are rules like on a normal road. So please drive carefully and considerately. And please excuse my bad english^^ P.S: I'm living about 60 miles away form the Nordschleife :p But the prices which are 21 euros for a single lap keep me off the track  |
That's a really good time for a 50hp car! Have you got plans for more power?
|
As far as this year goes, I may just try to make a run (or two:D ) on friday 19th september, which is the day before the DasDragDay weekend in Bitburg.
All depending on my schedule and if the engine is holding up through DDD6  |
Quote:
Well yes, I've got plans, although my money doesn't like these^^ I think I'm getting for a 80-90HP 1600ccm motor when I can afford it. Until then the car will be lightened, kind of race style ;) And there are several other investments on the car which keep me away from having more power :( |
Small update and to hope some others join as well.
Friday 19th september from 14:15 hours is still on as far as I am concerned. Hopefully it doesn't rain as that will keep me off the track. I have the boost turned down to 0.7 bar. Probably still making close to 200 hp which is very enough. Coming friday shakedown of the endurance of the turbomotor on a trackday at Zandvoort circuit. Fingers crossed. |
Sounds good Wally, you should have heaps of fun!!!
Don't let the rain deter you. It's worth getting out on the track, even if just for a casual tourist drive. The 'ring is like no other road or track in the world, it certainly has it's own spirit & atmosphere that all fans of driving HAVE to experience at least once in their lifetime. Wish I could be over there to do some laps with you :( I will definately be there in 09 tho! |
Will join!
|
Cool! Yours, together with Nigel (1303) and Marnix with his 1303 Gelb Schwarzem Renner (maybe) there will at least be 3 nice bugs on the Ring, maybe even 4 :D
|
Come on kids! How was it? :D

Beautifull weather, excellent company, I met a long lost friend who now runs a small pension at the Ring (met him at the filling station in Adenau, how unbelievable is that!) and did over a 1000 rounds himself... Well, I let the fotos speak for themselves: Meeting point at a petrol station near the border Netherlands-Germany: http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...3/100_2555.jpg Marnix in his awesome GSR: http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...3/100_2557.jpg AJ bug just finished and looking VERY good: http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...3/100_2559.jpg http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...3/100_2560.jpg |

|
Wow, you guys are living out a dream of mine!!!! Great shots, she looks beautiful.
Jason |
Wow!!! :D
Those pictures came out really well. How did your cars handle The 'ring? Any memorable on-track moments? |
Gawd I love that GSR! I've been extremely tempted to put the same paint job on the sports bug and race bug when it's done. Even got porsche wheels on it :D Now if only there was some in car video.
Wally, how did the turbo setup do at the ring? Give any quick cars a run for their money? |
I want to go back!!!
It was the first long trip with my just finished bug and first time ever that I have driven a car myself on a racetrack. I can tell you, this experience is truly amazing!! Just like Walter, I did two laps. First lap was mostly driving on the right half of the road, because I am 'slow-traffic' with only a 1600 engine and overtaking only allowed on the left side. I used this lap to explore the track and just enjoy driving on the largest racetrack of this planet. Almost every corner has some slope in it and on some hills I had to run a shorter gear in order to stay climbing. :) Second lap I drove much faster. Roadholding of my bug was quite surprising; on some coupled corners with no straights I even managed to stay after a 911 and circuit-prepared BMW. It was also surprising to see the bodyroll and jumping on the outer wheels of many fast factory cars and driving my bug about the same speed through the corner with only little tyre-screaming. It's an experience I won't forget. I definately will be there again next year, hopefully with bigger brakes and engine! http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/72636.jpg |
Humble: in-car videos are strictly forbidden there, as is keeping running timers in the car and right hand side overtaking.
They have these 'rules' as there are very many accidents with quite some casualties. The Ring authorities are very scared that the many accidents may lead to closure of the Nürburgring by the politicians if accidents and especially casualties go up any further... So, I didn't intend to give any other cars any run for their money as acting tough can cost you your car, big fines and damage costs to the track (closure because of your oil spillage of your own stupid accident costs up to 1500 euros per hour...) and ultimately lives to yourself and motorists falling by your oil loss. Having said all that....the track is SOOO unbelievebly nice and some curves are soooo tempting to be taken at some speed/acceleration that I could not resist to push the pedal down where I could see where I went and no traffic was ahead of me. Because of the trackday at Zandvoort the weekend before I knew the engine and car were in great shape and all felt very reliable And yes, some Audi S6 behind me could hardly gain up on me, but I let him pass anyways and kept behind him the rest of the remaining of the 20 km's track :D Track knowledge is EVERYTHING there, as a lot of the corners cannot be seen untill your almost halfway through it. This is because most are just over the hill when they turn... The differences in heights is what makes this track so unique imo. At some points the entire car was pushed hard into the shock bump stops on all 4 wheels when going downwards and hard uphill again. You could feel it in your stumich (sp?) and ears. The carroussel was very special as well, but very bumpy! I short, the car stuck to the track like glue due to all the mods and wide sticky tires and our 3 beetles had more spectators in the car park than all the GT2,3 RS's Lotus's and whatever had :D Quote:
And this was after the frst lap where I could just brake for this corner and thought to be more carefull for this one next time... That is how dangerous my enthousiasm for 'spirited' driving can be.. Preparation is therefore also very important and if I would have timed the curves or distance for this curve, I would have better anticipated it. Upside is that all other corners are less threathorous (sp?) and were ultimately fun to drive through. Pity we couldn't do a WOT down the straight, although a certain new 911 did try to pass me coming up the straight. Well, that was untill I saw him wanting to pass this little bug..hehe, so it was open road, no bends and he didn't pass and had to arrange behind me to exit the Ring halfway the straight :D Yeah, I was very carefull....:o While aiting for the TouristenFahren to open, we thought this was a Nissan Skyline, but later i heard it was the new Honda NSX...the sound of it running at topspeed down the straight was breathtaking!: Turn the sound to max and listen to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s1-Z5xWKGI |
This is our second lap driving through the gate. Just ignore the last part ;)
