MX67 Project

OK, it's time to show some pics of my long going project. Hope you'll like it, because I'll keep it all original 1967 body with trim, but will germanlook it

The 67' can't do what 1303 can in handling world, so I decided to make a German Look Grantourer rather that Racing German look...

So, it will be a German Look GT

Here are some pictures, and You can see the rest here on Croatian forum:

http://www.vwbuba.hr/forum/Itemid,0/...asc/start,150/

Some info...

1967' pan with IRS alu arms 944, rear 944 brakes
Puma front beam with 944 brakes conversion running 305 mm racing Alcon discs and Brembo 4 pot calipers
Bilstein dampers all round
915 gearbox
Heavy 911 Turbo seats, full electric, heated, Alcantara and 997 cocoa leather (original from Porsche supplier factory), original Alcantara sunroof gasket, all made by myself, from one piece, no joint's here! Alcantara wings beading.
Nardi steering wheel, 993 white tach with OBD (will show speed, temp etc., all in one instrument for clean look)

Engine:
Typ4 914 1.8 85PS, stock (for now), 80.000 km (lucky find!)

Wally, you won! Has been thinking alot, and I will go your route of turbocharging Aircooled rather then use waterpumper! Sorry for beeing rude in Your mythbuster topic... Allready got GT25 turbo (used), Mitsubishi EVO VIII ECU and software and someone who know how to use it all. Plan is 150 PS for now. Typ1 cooling on Typ4.

Hope You'll all like it.

germanlook.net was perfect inspiration, thank You all!

vdubzack February 6th 2010 12:49

The bar just broke itself and jumped in the fireplace!

al_kaholik February 6th 2010 17:21

Love the sunroof detail. How functional is it, or is this a dry weather car?

Very high quality else where.

Xellex February 6th 2010 18:25

wow nice project, the quality and detail work looks impressive! Thanks for sharing it with us, and keep the pics coming!
Love the Hertz trash-can also :)) Is it setup for SoundQuality or plain bass power? :P

MX67 February 6th 2010 18:38

Thank You folks :)

@alkaholik: It's all weather car. Alcantara can withstand much more than original sunroof gasket. Can be used outside... I've made much improvements on sunroof, no leaks etc., tryed with high press water... Few months working on sunroof, time consuming, but now I'm satisfied!

@vdubzack: I don't get that fireplace trown in the bar whatsoever, please explain, my english is limited and not used often :D

@ Xellex: Trash can is not mine, that's coachtrimmers workshop and his head on the photo :D

volkdent February 7th 2010 00:26

Gorgeous, keep us updated please.

dub_crazee February 7th 2010 05:28

lovely car there :)

Jim February 7th 2010 11:17

Very Very detailed bug!!! Awesome job mate!!!

Wally February 7th 2010 16:53

Very beautifull car!

BTW, its not about who won over who, we all make our own choices of course and I am fine with either, but when asked for opinions, of course I have one as we all do ;-)

I really like the racing disks!! They should be very light compared to OEM big stuff.

MX67 February 7th 2010 17:04

They ARE much less weight. And very expensive. But they should perform great.

Center is made out of steel and zinc plated, but I will make dur-alu ones as soon as I get top quality material over here, which is not so easy...

Even with steel centers, much lighter then OEM. Discs are 24 mm thick, 305 mm big. Just gave 4-pot's to friend who will work on them for me, paint them and make all needed :)

MX67 September 28th 2010 04:13

Long time no see...

I tought it would be cool to see the color of the Bug on daylight. Those pics up there are not so real cause they've made in neon light. This is the real color of the car...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/quote]

Also, I'm with the brake problem now, I had to machine new pistons for the 4pot Brembos because old was damaged. After that I was trying to buy repair kit with new rubber parts, and in the meantime found out those are Brembos from F40

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4366/02052010.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Well, I don't know about that, but somehow managed to find info: Nissan 350Z have same piston diameters (38mm and 42 mm), so I bought repair set locally. guess what: IT FITS! :D

Now some money came to my pockets, so I'm spending it on my Bug again

x_hodhoo September 30th 2010 13:15

Very nice!!

In my opinion, I think standard beetle look better than superbeetle, but I prefer handling of superbeetle. So, I swap my 1969 standard beetle pan with 1974 superbeetle pan and make a frame for front suspention and rack & pinion from 1975 superbeetle.

This is my project for now, it is 90% done.

:-)

Xellex September 30th 2010 14:38

wow x_hodhoo, nice project! I think it desirves it's own topic here, in the germanlook forums. I'm sure you have more pictures and stuff to share with us, so please do! :D

MX67 October 1st 2010 04:21

Yeah x_hodhoo!

Make topic, Your car sure look interesting! :)

I was thinking of making front subframe to house miata double wishbone suspension, in some ways, that's very similar to Your project ;)

evilC October 1st 2010 06:37

Hi x_hodhoo,
You cannot leave that sample of your car dangling on MX67's thread. Create your own build thread and please let us have all the info on your car as it looks very interesting.

I've put some Dynamat sheets last night. I have to do some more tonight. It's interesting how body sounds if You try knocking on parts which have some Dynamat on the other side.

wrenchnride247 November 5th 2010 19:47

Man thats some nice work! If I had that interior I would spill something on it within two weeks though.

volkdent November 6th 2010 01:04

Absolutely gorgeous! Amazing craftsmanship.

Bug@5speed(US) November 6th 2010 11:45

Wow awesome work and the details are beautiful

NO_H2O November 7th 2010 09:10

Very nice work. That interior is going to look amazing when it is done.

MX67 November 11th 2010 06:37

Thanks guys.

I was working on it for 10 months. Bought leather from factory in Austria that delivers OEM to Porsche. This is Cocoa Brown from Porsche 911 997 series, and Alcantara is also bought from the factory that makes roof liners for Mercedes C, E and S class. I've put some time into this, it was not easy to persuade someone to make exemption, because they do OEM.

The guy that does the stitching is best over here, but laizy and slow. Now we became friends, so I can say this without offensing him :D

I was with him every moment in "making of", so I've learned alot about all this and even made one black leather-red stitch steering wheel for my old Subaru.

Now we're moving on to roof liner made of same color of Alcantara material, same color as this.

I want this car to be Bentley-like inside. This is not pure German look, but I'm here because I'm closest to this style. hope You all agree :)

evilC November 11th 2010 13:52

Don't worry about it being Bentley like because Bentley is now (unfortunately) a part of VW! Also the latest Bentleys have an engineering excellence that fits with Germanlook philosophies.

This is how it looks done, I've put Alcantara inserts inside leather trimmed cardboard and glued it. Sniffed some, but now I'm OK :D

Front wheel is too deep inside, that's because there's no bearing mounted on the inside, only outside :)

dub_crazee February 6th 2011 05:31

i love every part of this car so far - nice project!

German68Air August 17th 2011 16:18

MX67, great looking build you have there. Awesome!

70Turbobug August 19th 2011 06:22

MX67 September 6th 2011 10:37

Done some more stuff, sorry but I have no pics with me now...

Tried Bilsteins and put wheel bearings.

Made some parts so I can use Type 1 cooling on Type 4 engine. All is Alu CNC machined, middle part of the alternator pulley is stainless steel, and pulley is aluminum. This is how set looks like :D

Nice machine work. One thing I noticed though...you need to broach the fan pulley hub for the woodruff key on the ALT shaft. ;)

Good eye my friend. GOOD eye ;)

wrenchnride247 September 7th 2011 20:34

I would hate to see that nice hub "friction weld" itself to the ALT shaft. Or, not let the cooling fan spin fast enough to cool the motor. ;)
