Michigan Vintage - May 17th, 2009

Hey all,

We'll be cruising to the Vintage show next weekend. Probably head about about lunch on Saturday (May 16th). It's about a 5 hr road from 'sauga. The plan is to hit the show in the Sunday and head back in the early afternoon.

Let me know by this Saturday (May 9th) if you're coming and I'll make the lodging reservations. One more thing, drive the dub or stay home..:D

fast Ed May 7th 2009 16:44

I'd like to come down, but will be looking to hitch a ride with someone in their VDub, as my 73 is to be sold very shortly. Certainly would split the fuel costs of course. :)

cheers

Wish I could, but previous commitments.

Enjoy the trip gents!

Sounding like a broken record here: to make this trip, i will need to swap out the close ratio trans from the super.

Anyone have a 2-bolt nosecone, for my stock late trans?

Pete

gonebuggy May 7th 2009 21:36

Pete I may have one. I'll give you a call tomorrow to discuss that and your Remmele parts.

Alex

petevw May 7th 2009 23:04

Call me anytime. I'm off all day. :)

Have a couple days now to source parts and get it back in for the weekend.

Lanner, who's going down to the show?

Pete

CLKWRK May 11th 2009 06:50

Hey Lanner,

"drive the dub or stay home" nice touch Lanner :P, clearly aimed at me potentially driving the 911

I'm in for next weekend (hope its not too late to get in on lodging deals)
Anyways I am happy with the way the new engine has been running so I think I will drive the gold ghia.
I have no passenger, so if you need a ride ED you are welcome to ride along with me

flat May 11th 2009 11:49

Alright, so we have:
Me
Steve B
Andy B
Sean (Steve's buddy)
Pete
Mariano
Bryan
Ed

I got 2 rooms, so that should cover the lodging. Let me know if anyone else is down.

L

CLKWRK May 11th 2009 13:11

Isn't that kinda crowded for two rooms?
Guess they are big rooms

flat May 11th 2009 13:25

2 double beds per room. Cosy yes. It's up to you. I've got 2 rooms now, set yourself up...

fast Ed May 11th 2009 14:24

Bryan, thanks for the offer of a ride. That would give me a good opportunity to really get a feel for the Ghia, it's still a purchase candidate for me. Guy that is buying my Sports Bug is supposed to be picking it up within the next week.

So do we have a designated meeting point and time for the trip down?

Are we coming back Sunday night, or staying over to come home on Monday?

cheers

Ed, plan is to drive back Sunday after the show.

Meet at the Tim's on the north side of the 401 and Hwy 25 (Milton)? Time?

Boy am i having a hard time getting this super back together with the stock trans. :banghead:

The EMPI drive flanges for beetle trans --> T2 CV's aren't working out.

1-drive flanges have 3/8-24 thread instead of M8
2-3/8-24 cap screw doesn't fit in the T2 CV

Can i drill out the CV's bolt holes to 3/8? How hard is the CV?

I can't use the setup from the close ratio box because: 10 tooth spider gear conversion, 091 output shafts (super spline drives), 091 flanges

Pete

gonebuggy May 14th 2009 06:50

Pete,

Empi in fact makes two different styles of drive flanges. The ones with the "HD" bolts (3/8) and ones with stock (M8) I went through this myself. I eventually got a pair with the M8 thread. I think Greg got mine through Rancho. I know Cip1 only lists the 3/8.

You should be able to drill out the CVs if that's the route you go. In a drill press, use a slow rpm (200 or slower) and a fast feed on the handle. To my recollection CVs are case hardened on the wear surfaces for about 1/32 or so. So you shouldn't have to worry about contacting that. If in fact there are a few hard spots, you may need to sharpen the drill a few times. Just sucks that you'll have to clean and repack each one to ensure no chips get lodged in there! Best of luck!

Alex

PS I have stock axles/cvs and flanges you can borrow for the trip if that helps.

fast Ed May 14th 2009 09:42

3/8" is closer in size to 10 mm, so you should have enough meat there to drill them out and rethread. What a biotch that is ... good luck with it.

Sounds good. 2pm? What about Bryan? Meet you further down the road at a service center?

CLKWRK May 15th 2009 14:14

Yeah I can meet up at hwy 25,
ED - where do you live?

It is possible that I have the gold car sold tonite, if that is the case then I might be breaking the "dubs only rule" ;)

fast Ed May 15th 2009 15:15

Bryan, I'm up in Caledon. I've sent a p.m. to Lanner, to find out if I can maybe leave my car at his place, and get a ride down to Milton from there.

thx,
Ed N.

CLKWRK May 15th 2009 15:36

yeah i pick up the porsche tonight from steve at MPS, he had to tear down the entire left bank to get all the bottom studs out.
Turns out that engine has never been torn down since it was built in 1980 and still has a hone!
Cost more than I expected, but its done right .... now I'm poor :(

petevw May 15th 2009 23:00

Drilled out the CV's last night. Went well with a carbide drill bit.

Today got the driveshafts, trans, and engine back in. All solo. Boy am i sore!

Snapped a 12pt socket on the CV bolts, so the passenger side is finger tight untill i get another at CT in the morning. Pulled the shifter out as it wasn't shifting properly(hopefully its not the trans :( ). Hope to get it all working by noon tommorrow.

If not, i'll be rolling in the other dub, the TDI.

Weather is calling for rain all day.......

So.... 2pm at the Tim's on Hwy 25, north of the 401.

Pete

TunedPerfection May 15th 2009 23:05

Good luck getting the 12 pt at crappy tire. At my location they had no clue what I meant. I could meet you in Oakville with mine at 10:30am tomorrow. Let me know.

petevw May 16th 2009 00:39

Thanks Greg, i'll let you know.

CLKWRK May 16th 2009 02:49

Ok heres the deal, gold car is gone, porsche is not finished yet
I am officially car-less
I will try to get the audi

petevw May 16th 2009 03:36

Terrible, 3:30am and just put the tools down. It better be good to go.

petevw May 16th 2009 11:47

Throwing in the towel.

Can't get the trans to neutral. Can get what i think is R-2-4 but no neutral-1-3. Tried 2 shifters, and a pair of vice grips on the trans shaft. Something's not right. Need to pull the nosecone and see what's up.

It'll all come out again on Monday. :banghead:

See'ya later.

Pete

petevw May 19th 2009 01:20

Was a good weekend. :D

Time to post some pics............

fast Ed May 19th 2009 08:57

I had fun, that was my first ride ever in a Split Bus. Thanks everyone for putting up with my newbie questions and comments. :p

Will post up some photos once I get them unloaded from my camera.

gonebuggy May 19th 2009 11:40

Tell me about the trip boys! Wish I could of been there!

I have been rockin' my bug all weekend though. Damn I'm starting to miss my stroker motor:(

Alex

CLKWRK May 19th 2009 17:04

Went pretty smooth,
5 car caravan, golf, audi, bus, two bugs
Two minor breakdowns:

Mariano - plugged gas tank pickup tube ... again
Lanner - popped remote oil filter line

Both repaired roadside.
The show was at the Karmann facility at Plymouth, Michigan.
There was a swap meet, lots of cars and we got treated to a tour of their R&D facilities.
Hopefully someone will post some pics as I forgot my camera :(

fast Ed May 20th 2009 09:34

I took a bunch of pics, just need to get them unloaded from my camera.

Bryan, Lanner had another issue with his Bus a bit further along ... he can explain. :p
