And now for something completely different...

No, I'm not trying to get into a remake of Mad Max! These are the high tech forms I used (4" ABS pipe LOL) to create the sleeves that will be holders for the fog lights. I've purchased some 4" HID lights that will be finished with fender contour yellow lexan. http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/625582.jpg These holes are drilled for high output white LEDs a la Audi, Merc, and Porsche. The output of each LED is 250,000 MCD! I hope they are bright enough, I've checked out the Porsches LED DLRs and they are actually each in their own reflector and the LED actually shines down and then is reflected forward. http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/625583.jpg I moved the exhaust cutouts to straddle the seam between the fenders and the apron. The exhaust diameter will be 2 x 2.5" but I will be sleeving with tips made out of 2.75" to add a heat shield and that will fill in the 3" cutouts quite well I hope. I fiberglassed the fenders and added sheetmetal to the apron. http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/625584.jpg |
hahahahah at first look i thought you were putting in some grenade launchers, you know for those crappy drivers :D
|
wow, looks like you've been busy! I can't wait to see how the leds come out:D
|
Would be cool if its turn signals and they are sequential! (like the old tailights on the Cougars)
|
I'm thinking I might make a row of maybe 6 or 7 yellow LEDs inside the headlight bucket to act as the turnsignals, maybe I can put a couple of cougar modules together to make 6 work in sequence!

Window Scoops
I finally got the set of rough bucks made up for the quarter window scoops. I've used 5 layers of .5" MDF glued together. Once they set I'll carve it all down and smooth it out. They'll become the forms I use to vacuum mold the scoops. This set is for scoops in new quarter pop-outs, so if anyone wants a set for early standard windows I think they will need to be larger than this, but I don't have standard windows to compare to.

Sweet, what kind of fogs are you going to use?

I've gutted them and they'll be attached to the ends of the tubes. Then I've got some yellow Lexan covers I've made that will give this sort of effect with the HID behind them: http://images.thesamba.com/vw/classi...ix/2644668.jpg Jason |
More work on the bucks today, I bondo'd them together so they'll be symetrical at least at the opening. I'll let my body guy fine tune these and paint them for the vacuum molding in Lexan.

I know you've already created the bucks for scoops, but a NACA duct will actually pull more airflow then the scoops will.
-Dave |
That might be the case, but I'm not really sure. If you look at any current supercar, they are using ducts that are similar, so it can't be that bad. I had originally thought it would be very simple to go NACA, but it would also look messy, and part of this is to maintain the subtle looks too. I've seen plenty with NACAs, never seen one with a scoop. This will keep the one off feel I've been ending up going for. If it doesn't work it will be easy to do NACA, this is a experiment all the way. Thanks for the suggestions though, alway appreciated.

The buck looks great so far...but I'm interested in how many cans of raid one person needs :lmao::D

Love the LED's and exhaust positioning Jason. The LED idea is right up there with today's modern thinking, I'm surprised no-one has tried that before. Keep up the good work!

Looks GOOD jason. Keep the pics comming !!

My rally car has what we call "dumbo's ears" for cooling off driver/co-driver in hot weather and on track days. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/64/19...d11ad91ed3.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1367/...d7bf09501c.jpg Below 45km/h you don't feel any airflow through them, 45-70kph shows some light flow and above 80kph they're fairly effective. Some tests with NACA ducts on the actual window show much better flow, but for packaging reasons I have to do the scoops so we can open and close the rear doors. -Dave |
I just finished watching the '10 Dakar rally. I kept a lookout at all the cars for what they were using for air intakes. There was only ONE NACA style duct, and that was on top of the front fenders of the VW Race Touaregs. All the rest had scoops, and the Mitsubishi entries actually had scoops that looked almost identical to the scoops I've made, and in the same location, and they need to function at lower speeds in the desert, so I don't know that I'm too far off. I suspect the main advantage of the NACA is its decreased effect on aerodynamics and less to do with flow. I'm not going to be worrying about how many tenths I'll be able to shave, so I think the scoops might be a nice look. Again, I can always very easily convert to NACA later if I need to.

sorry, I'm not trying to argue with you...but I can see how it comes across that way.

Dave, I know your not arguing, no worries! Just trying to give me info and I really appreciate, thank you. Ha Ha, when it rains we used to have ant issues, and now with the little guy cruising around, we took them outside so he couldn't raid himself! Jason |
Any updates on the LED marker lights ?
|
Jason any updates ?
