56 Oval

Hi
I just bought this 56 Oval, I found it in a driveway abut 10 ks from my house, I used to see it under a tarp but a few weeks ago the tarp blew of so I saw it was an Oval. Not sure what colour to paint it, thinking a US colour Capri Blue. So I will get it back on the road some nice wheels and a little bit lower. I also have a SC12 Toyota supercharger that I might fit It has been modified a little, 1600 single port motor I think, its an early Type 3 case later synchro trans adjustable front beam caster shims KMac front sway bar 4 stud Beetle front disc brakes and Type 3 rear drums the dash has holes in for gauges, a tacho and fuel gauge, not sure if I will fill this in or not My son has donated some Southern Ways wheels from his Jap wheel collection, he has about 60 pairs, all in 15 inch. I will get the bolt pattern on the Beetle changed to 4x114.3 and have suitable sized lips put on the centres. |
Nice Steve!! I just wonder at the ultimate level of performance this car will end up with.

nice!!

Thanks guys, I will keep it under control I think, I already have one stupid car. We are still building an 2332 Oxy Boxer for my sons 1303 so his 1904 might go into the oval
|
What a find so close by! Congrats!
|
I dig that you like oxyboxers, Steve. Don't ask me why as I don't really know. Oxyboxers always make me think of the last of the aircooled 911 engine, like, they're the penultimate aircooled VW(even though they don't start out that way). Makes no semse to me either.

Hi
OK, car is stripped, panels are at the panel beater, just waiting on the blaster now as I want him to blast the area around the brake master cylinder reservoir and the inside the grills under the back window, I'm pretty sure I will paint it a US colour Capri Blue I went for a drive up and down the driveway before I pulled the motor out. I found a few stupid things that have been done to this car, it has Type 3 rear brakes, someone fitted them with the handbrakes cables entering the backing plate at the rear, the new exhaust was fitted without heat riser blank offs and no fibre rings on the J pipes and the generator was fitted 90 degrees out . Hi
I went with Capri Blue, loving the colour, starting to put it back together. I had to put my sons bug in storage for while as I only have a small garage. My son is building a garage at his house soon. Steve |
Thats a nice original color indeed!

Picked up my wheels from Barrel Bros. in Milperra, very happy with them, diamond cut centres and polished lips coated in clear powder coat
|
Looks like you're on the path!
|
They have come up really well, now to see them on the car :)
|
I'm working on the rear bag setup now which is a bit hard with the body on

Hi
Long time no updates. I retired last August so I'm getting stuck back into my Oval. I've been accepted to take the car to Summernats 2025 a huge Street Machine car show, so the pressure is on. I've been chipping away at the car but still lots to do. Its booked in for interior in late October. I've fitted a late model shift plate with a nylon bush along with a CSP shifter and while the tunnels was open I fitted seat belt anchors just to the rear of the handbrake. There was almost a tub of grease on the bottom of the chassis, so PO was trying to get rid of shift rod noises Motor is now a reconditioned 1916 with 110 Engle and CSP Viper headers. I'm fitting EFI and a SC12 supercharger to it using a custom plenum and Mexican EFI manifolds and a Haltech ecu. Car is going to the fabricator soon so that he can finish off the rear bag installation on the hoist and he's also making a plenum to mate the SC12 to the Mexican efi manifolds. A friend is making custom supercharger pulleys which will use a hdt belt which is similar to a timing belt |

I bought some Smiths gauges that look almost factory. My dash had already been cut for a tacho and 2 inch gauge. I've also bought a oil pressure gauge as well made by Smiths

I'm running a deadhead fuel system or non return so ran a -6 line today
I'm also using LS truck coils. Needed some longer leads as I'm running the coils behind the fan housing. I tried everywhere to buy them so Amazon came to the rescue. I have 4 spare leads as I use LS coils on my other Beetle but they were too short. These ones will be easier fit VW spark plug boots as well |
that's a lot less work than running it through the tunnel. Did you use steel or aluminium?
|
Its aluminum with AN fittings at each end. Its well protected

Hi
I'm running individual LS truck coils on the Oval. I was able to source correct length coil leads, and I could also fit Beetle spark plug boots onto the coil leads |

I found a Nissan DBW accelerator pedal unit that should work OK
|
Do you have the part number for that? That looks like it'll work better than the solution I had from a Toyota Prius.
|
Hi
I'm not sure if the part number will help but these are the model cars that it fits |

A friend of my son is doing some fabrication for me. First thing he did was make intake pipes for the supercharger using the Mexican end castings

trying again with photos

That guy can weld and the 'packaging' looks very neat, lots of thought on your part.
Well done |
Thanks. Ben is very good at welding stuff. He used to work for Hypertune

Hi
I’ve been spending a bit of time on my Oval. Its now running a 1916 with a SC12 supercharger, Haltech Nexus2 ecu and drive by wire and a Flex fuel sensor to run E85. Its running a 4-inch narrowed beam with Monroe air shocks and bags on the back |
That looks absolutely fantastic
