914 powered 5 speed beetle
 

I'm a couple days work from having it on the road. I just have to run the fuel lines, fix the throttle cable and clutch cable and do some basic wiring and I'm done, well at least once my seats come back from the apolstery shop.

didn't quite get it running, but I got it to the show none the less.

well it looks as though I took second in class, not bad for an unfinished car.

very nice, i have a 2056 914 in my super beetle and have some fuel probs. are you running bigger lines, if so where are you puting them . i would likr to run the main line threw the body hump . any ideas

I'm just using the stock line for the time being.

if/when I switch to FI I'll use the stock as a fuel return line, and run a new line of larger diameter.

How does the Porsche shroud fit under the rear decklid? is it very close to touching it? How much room do you have?

for some reason the decklid won't quite close, I believe it has something to do with an older body on an IRS pan, in the near future I'll swap to coilover shocks in the rear, and cut the center section if the tortion housing out so I can move the engine and tranny froward about 1 1/2" to 2", this will solve the decklid and airfilter clearance problems. At this time I may also replace the floor pan halves, they are intact but have some ugly welds and a bad paintjob, they will recieve an epoxy primer/finish coat treatment , I first did this to a friends pan on a restoration project and it is so nice you can eat off it, looks almost like it was powdercoated. I figure the body is almost show quality, with just a little more work the whole underside can be the same

So is it the air filter or the Porsche fan that causes the decklid not to close?
if it is the 911 fan you can trim off the top portion of the lip to give you a bit more room.

the porsche fan, keeps it about 1/2" from closing, airfilter hits on the side of the engine bay.

Which diameter does the Porsche fan have (outside diameter of the Porsche alternator ring)?

I don't remember but it was a stock 911 11 blade fan, the ring was turned down a bit in order to take any corners off.

easy questions to answer

wheels are 15" phonedials, running 195 50's on the front and 195-60's on the back

brakes, 944 brakes front and rear (calipers disc's and rotors)

911 seats, cost $900 canadian to have them recovered with the backseat covered to match, and they adapted quite easily

the tracks of the 911 seats are identical widthe to the stock beetle tracks, but the seats are a bit lower

so i built a H out of 1x2 tubing tacked the 911 tracks to it, removed 4 machine screws to remove the seats, finished the weld, then welded the H to the stock beetle seat rails. Viola porsche seats with theporsche seat adjustment.
(I'm using a '71 pan)
If A guy wanted the seats lower, you could weld the porsch tracks directly to the VW tracks.

What kind of five speed did you use, and what did you have to mod to make it work? I've been wondering about that... I'm thinking it's either a vanagon 5spd, a reversed 914, or a 911. Am I even close?

I used a 901 from a 911

fit was fairly easy, but I had the body off the pan at the time.

its a crappy one that came with the carbs, I had to modify it a bit for it to work with the 911 shroud. Yes it is a strait bar type.

How about the firewall ? Is the original still in place or did you cut it out ?
How did you form the aluminum for the firewall ?

the original firewall is still in place, I just screwed brushed stainless panels to it.

stainless panels are simple to do, I just used a piece of cardboard and cut it toshape to create a template, then had stainless cut at a local sheet stock reseller.

any trimming I did with a plasmacutter and grinder. touched it up with a flapwheel..
