to many choices, which brakes

ok im new to the brake systems. the rest of my car is planned out. but which brake system to use?

i want something easy to adapt and be mindful of a budget. i would like a kit of some sort. i want be road racing , maybe some drag racing. i will be using it as a daily driver.

i plan on having a 1776 turbo engine. i want disks. and will be running the new jetta 17x7 longbeach rims.

i will have to get my disks redrilled for the correct lug pattern.
what should i use?

i like the 944 setup and the cbperformance setup also. i dont know which is more costly , but that doesnt matter as ill do the safest. im leaning to the 944, but is there a way to adapt to the new jetta bolt pattern?

also, if i need to replace a rotor, can you easily get them from cb as all i see is in kit form.

i had a 91 trooper and i warped all 4 rotors as i was driving hard, braking hard and going through deep water.

so whats the chance i can warp these rotors 944 or cb.

i guess im asking which is better for longevity of replacement?

Neil,
If you want a "kit" you will have to go with the CB brakes. I am sure they will sell you just a rotor if you have a problem or need a service replacement in the future. The 944 conversions will give better braking but they are not a kit, you need to round up the parts and make it work. Not too difficult but if you are not mechanicaly inclined, stat with a kit.

Cost for the CB kit and a 944 conversion is about the same if you pick up your 944 parts used and rebuild them (watch ebay), new Porsche parts will be very expensive.

you can also go with a Kerscher kit too if you want to run a different pattern then Porsche wheels.

BRAKES

YOU COUD TRY A TAROX KIT NOT TOO EXPENSIVE MINE WAS €700 FOR THE VENTED DISCS AND CALIPERS WITH BRAIDED HOSES. THEY FIT RIGHT ONTO A SUPERS SPINDLES AND YOU CAN GRET ANY PCD SIZE YOU WANT SO ANY WHEELS ARE NO PROBLEM.

NYBugman1972 October 8th 2003 20:34

Woah woah woah... Tar-Ox makes a kit for Super beetles? Can you tell us more? Pretty please?

cormac163 October 9th 2003 07:14

tar-ox brake kits

yep tar-ox make kits for supers all you need to do is email them with what you want on their contact page on the web site. somebody who they think is close to you will get in touch and you pay them. the company i had to go through were Die Kafer Service in Italy and all i had to do was tell kirsten; the girl who conacted me, exactly what i wanted she gave me a price and i sent her the money and within two weeks i had myself a gnarly set of red callipers with vented discs which sit straight on in place of the original callipers. they are still in the box though as of yet but as soon as they are on i will post a picture up. there is a picture of a 1303 cab on the tar ox website if you are interested just click on the demo cars tab, scroll to volkswagen beetle and click and you will get a lovely pic of a super and a close up of the wheel and callipers. enjoy:D

NYBugman1972 October 9th 2003 08:31

Yeah, I saw the demo car. It's nice to hear that there is another big brake option out there.

Do you know if your brake kit makes the track any wider than stock? That's a big factor for me.

As you can tell, I am REALLY interested in this.

Hey, do you have any pics of the brakes?

cormac163 October 9th 2003 09:23

tarox

they dont make the track any wider if you opt for the standard discs but if you want vented it will only increase the track by about 5 mm if you want i wil email you the pics and show the difference between standard discs and vented.

cormac

NYBugman1972 October 9th 2003 16:16

Please email them to vwbugman72@aol.com

5mm per side? That's it? It's amlost too good to be true.

that may get fixed with the pricing.:silly:

sounds like these can be another great alternative that most weren't aware of.

cormac163 October 10th 2003 06:46

just sent an email you should have them in a few minutes

cormac163 October 10th 2003 06:59

they are not too badly priced as i said before the callipers pads discs and the braided hoses and the bearings came to €700 which i imagine is about the same in dollars the pads are available from around €20 per pair so they are pretty reasonable i think. but then again a fool and his money...

NYBugman1972 October 10th 2003 08:50

I got the email. They are really nice brakes. Now for Tarox to get back to me.

Ron Roberts October 10th 2003 10:10

Does Tarox have a web site? Whats the adderss?

Ron

NYBugman1972 October 10th 2003 12:47

www.tarox.com

I think Cormac and I have opened up a pandora's box of sorts :)

cormac163 October 10th 2003 13:02

www.tarox.com is the web site

dont hold your breath waiting for someone to get back to you it could be three or four days.....

NYBugman1972 October 10th 2003 13:24

As long as it's not 3 or 4 months. I'm just gathering information.

zen October 10th 2003 13:52

duh. sorry was only looking at the bootom of the thread. that is decent pricing. so what are the opinions on performance?

NYBugman1972 October 10th 2003 15:04

Well, I certainly can't comment, but out friend cormac seems to have ordered an 11" vented rotor a-la CSP, but with a billet 6-piston, red anodized caliper. I'd imagine it to be pretty good.

Hey Comac, would you like me to post the pics you emailed me?

Eurolook71 October 11th 2003 06:00

Ok, I'm getting excited...

Questions...

Corman163...I assume you have splindles with provisions to add calipers, does anyone think the kit includes brackets for us over here in the US, or would the brackets sold by CSP be ok to use???

What 700, (not sure how to make that symbol) in US dollars???

Thanks!!!

Very intrested!!!!!

NYBugman1972 October 11th 2003 07:12

700 GBP = 1200 USD give or take.

cormac163 October 11th 2003 13:11

please if anyone else is interested, please add the pictures to the site.
i dont work for them if anyone thinks i do.
i am actually from ireland and the cost was in euro 700 so thats about 500GBP.
As for the CSP spindles i honestly dont know but if they are the same size as the originals fitted onto UK spec supers i dont see how there could be a problem. If anyone wants me to send some pics i'll get a measuring tape and put it beside the callipers and email them.

Eurolook71 October 12th 2003 01:19

I got it...

700 euros

=

$825ish

NYBugman1972 October 12th 2003 08:46

That's a real nice price. Yeah, I got GPB and Euro's confused there for a second. No matter, it's all clear now.

Here they are.

cormac163 October 12th 2003 09:44

thanks for putting up the pics mike .
i would not know how to.
i would also like to know myself what anyone else thinks of tar-ox brake kits as i will not have my car back until next jan - feb??

Eurolook71 October 13th 2003 12:06

Wow, those are sweet!!

I don't know though, I'm trying to find info on a Volvo conversion, like the grey ghost in August of hot VWs. Rotors and calipers are pretty cheap, yet still vented, but it may need the hub. Plus I have yet figured out how I might bolt up the calipers. Anyway, I will probably just go with toplines kit, great kit for the $$$.

SilverBullet October 13th 2003 20:04

SSP (StreetStyleandPower) sells them also. www.streetstyleandpower.com , go to shop online, stop and go, brake conv. kit. Their rotors are drilled and slotted.:)

MattKab October 15th 2003 18:43

This kit for the money looks like a massive demand very soon! With good, delivery times and conveniance of that magnitude I'd think twice before buying secondhand Porsche brakes again. Too late, 'paid a bit more than that all in.

Those Calipers look sweet as! What diameter/s are the pots?

The rotors look quite heavy, compared to 951. I sense a hit with this product still, the proof is in the pudding. Optimum? or up-rated stock repalcement?

This will make a very cool Beetle.

Matt

cormac163 October 15th 2003 19:57

Ahh i have just taken delivery today of a fine set of rear discs conversions from Kersher courtesy of michael leche in machine7. i have to admit that they are the dogs danglies. i will take some photos of them and upload them. They are pretty similar to the front callipers already on the 1303S but with the extra handbrake rigging. the discs are nice drilled and grooved which will look pretty sweet on the car with the tarox kit up front. Someday when the rest of the car is up and running and out of the garage.
I will be working on a website soon enough just to show the stages the car has gone through and i will put a section dedicated with just the brakes as i dont see too many How To Features on upgrading these kits to Stock IRS cars witht drums.

Happy Stopping :D

darren October 15th 2003 20:34

i have a an identical rear kerscher set up for sale brand new and boxed...£500 dang cormac:rolleyes:

kenfyoozed October 15th 2003 21:45

does SSP have a disc brake kit for the rear? i looked at their web site and only saw the tarox for the front. wheres the rear?

neil

cormac163 October 16th 2003 07:35

i would talk to darren because it is the tastiest piece of kit that i have seen next to the tarox kit ill get the photos up pretty soon.£500 is a bargain

Chris Percival September 22nd 2004 09:12

Tarox do a set for the rear too, I saw them for sale at Spa in Belgium.

cormac163, I assume you have been running these for a year now with no problems? My only concern with them was corrosion, as the tarox letters are cut into the anodising (sp?). With all the salt on the roads in the winter I could imagine corrosion happening here?

Look forward to hearing from you..

cormac163 September 22nd 2004 09:57

corrosion

none at all, its amazing how they look after not washing them for a month or two.

Chris Percival September 22nd 2004 10:48

And your still pleased with them? Still stopping you well?

cormac163 September 22nd 2004 12:12

best ever

I have to admit that i drive like a lunatic and could have ended up a lot worse for wear only i had the tarox kit put on i had the kerscher kit on the rear which were good alright but lacking in the bite of the tarox kit. i would definitely get them again especially for big engine bugs its an easier option for supers as they bolt right on.

Chris Percival September 22nd 2004 15:30

With hindsite, would you have gone for a larger rear brake then?

cormac163 September 23rd 2004 06:52

road or track

depends on what it was for, if i was building a flat out track car i would get the bigger brakes cause the front brakes take a lot of use on the road but they are effective none the less, and a hell of a lot better than the standard drums.

Chris Percival September 23rd 2004 08:28

Do you have the vented disk setup, or non-vented setup on the front?
