Update on my Bug........(pics)

Well, It's been a while.....

For those that don't know I've been building a bit of a German looker (though it's gone a bit 'custom' now too) and, whilst it's note quite finished it is at last on the road.........

at the risk of sounding a bit big headed, it's turning out quite well....

Pics below....

Dude thats a sweet color, What year is your Bug??? Im going to guess 66, but my spidey sences arent very good, at least not when I have an extremely HOT hot pocket in my mouth, I guess I should let it cool down.....

Al B June 21st 2004 03:09

Hey the wheels look great and sure help tie the flames into the theme of the car. Not for everyone, but what that we do to our cars is? I am sure that some would not like what I am doing on my two projects either. But I really like your car and wish mine were driving and looking good like yours.

Thanks,

Randy

I like just about everything on the car. I have always loved the color that you chose for your car. Sweet ride man. :agree: :agree:

kenfyoozed June 21st 2004 15:51

first off , i mean no offense in anyway, but as a whole i dont like the car, but thats because its not my taste, but like you said but I like them and that's what matters most! so im sure it all works for you.

That being said, i really like the way the entire car is tired together, flames theme ( sorry dont care for it) is carried through out the enitire ride. All the custome work looks nice and the body seems to be as close to perfect as possible. And while at first glance it doesnt do anthing for me, it is put together with class and craftsmanship.

So GREAT job, and i hope my car can look the same caliber someday. :agree:

The wheels have had a bit of a makeover...

Trick details throughout.

Nice trunk layout. What's your audio setup?

I like the dash. Could you explain the light/wiper switch layout and where did you get the knobs? Do they light up? Are the switches stock?

I like the color coded headlamp housing. I'm considering the same, but with color coded trim rings too (yours look good with the chrome bumpers, etc.). Do the headlights look any dimmer by not having a silver housing? Are you using the running light as a blinker? Does it show when the lights are on?

Deck lid is way cool. Does it shoot flames out the vents?

Thanks for sharing Al.

Al B August 20th 2004 11:10

Cheers Bill,

The Audio is all Audiobahn stuff, all bought via ebay for MUCH cheapness :D
1500w Mono Amp for 2 12' Subs behind the back seat
250w 2 Channel for the 6 1/2's in the front kick panel/speaker pods
(next plan is to get another 250w Amp to run a par of 6x9's...... just dont know where I'm going to put them yet!)

Light switch layout is......

Rear heated screen, headlights/sidelights, Hazzard/warning lights. All stock switches (rear screen switch is a hazzard switch to the relay) Yep they light up and you can get them from.....

http://www.bernardnewbury.co.uk/shop/index.html

(Click on the Billet stuff.)

The headlamps are definately no dimmer :D but then they've been upgraded somewhat...

Yes I'm running the running lights (as you have them... we, in the UK don't need them :) ) as a blinker and yes you can see them VERY well with the lights on.

As for the deck lid shooting flames.................one day

Thanks

Al, I've been watching your car's progress since you first posted on STF and it only gets better with time. Keep up the awesome work... :agree: :agree:

SuperRSi August 20th 2004 13:25

The really nice thing is you now can be driving around in between tweeking bits. The car just gets better and better. Enjoy!

(Wish I was driving my never ending project)

Thanks,

Randy

beetle1303 August 20th 2004 15:49

Thats a really sweet ride.

But since you asked for personal opinions:

i love your hidden door hinges, your exhaust(specialy the blazed colour)
your ICE seems good and powerfull, but i would have gone differently on the position of the amps (no big deal)

On the exterior stuff things seem to me more of a cal look (much more strict approach to GL theme for me please)

what ever i said above is my personal opinion and is strictly judged on my personal preferences. IT DOESNT matter cos its your car. and if you are happy the way it is then we should all be happy for you

anyway we are all glers but we shouldnt be the same...

again this is a really nice ride and congratulations on your work. keep it up

beetle1303, Chris

imho, its really hard to make flames look good. but you did it, great job.

Al B August 23rd 2004 03:23

Thanks for the comments guys, keep 'em comin'......

I know that it's not to everyones taste, and I know that it's lost it's way 'a bit' on the GL thing, But Like you guys say........ It's my car and I should just enjoy it!

..........trust me I do!!

Thanks again folks

Al B

MattKab August 23rd 2004 15:09

Well done this weekend mate! Are you used to the fuss yet? :D

It's cool to see your ride on GL.com, makes the world a much smaller place!

You'll fly through your MOT every year I'm sure :)

Keep up the good work fella!

Update on my Bug........(pics)

nice bug, love the color, my question is about the scoops on the engine cover. what are they from or did you free hand them? :D

Al B October 5th 2004 17:36

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Matt, since VWNorthwest the bugs won 3 trophies at MAC(H)5 and a Top ten at VW Action.......... well pleased!!! :D

I've managed to get the BMW M3 discs for the back end so it 'should' stop a little better soon!!

Coffinator dude,

The color is a Honda color, glad you like it! the scoops on the deck-lid are hand formed I'm affraid. They look rather smart though! :D ....and more to the point they work!

Hi,

sorry that I hav'n't replied sooner........been away for a while... duty calls and all that!

To answer your question on the hidden hinges, I bought the kit about 4 years ago from Machine7 here in England, alas, sadly the kit is no longer available.
However, Autoloc do a hinge kit that can be adapted to suit, I've also seen Ford Transit van and Reliant Robin hinges used to do the same thing in the past so don't give up hope!

As an aside..... I've sorted a few things out over the past couple of months or so that others may be interesed in...

BMW M3 rear brakes.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2.jpg~original
One off twin tailpipe stainless' exhaust - complete with stainless' heat exchangers!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...3.jpg~original

some big fat carb's to fill the engine bay and help the new motor move a wee bit better

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...1.jpg~original

and a rather nice handmade stainless' breather tank up behind the fan housing.

Anyway, your comments are always welcome guys.

Very good job on the car, those M3 brakes are the from the E46 model or E36?
I have a set of E39 M5 brakes lying around that I want to put on my bug in the near future.

I don't know where Al got his but if you give Machine 7 a call they might be able to help as they used to sell a kit to conceal the hindges.

hybrid_john March 8th 2005 00:00

I got my hinges from Auto Loc. using them on the stock hinge side might be easier then using them to suicide your doors! They are quite big...but nothing a little cutting cant handle :D

Troy_Audio March 11th 2005 16:12

thats 1 sweet lookin bug..
Hey is that the Airspeed lid?
It looks killer!
peace Troy

Hi guys sorry for taking a while to reply.........

The brakes are off a '99 E36 and were an absolute steal!!! All the brackets and machining is now done and they're all fitted up and just waiting to be bled............. they 'should' stop me pretty well!

Justdubbin you're spot on about the hidden hinges :D 'got them form Mike Leche at M7 ........ 5 years ago though, and I know that Mike isnt making them anymore........... too expensive to make apparently. Never mind.

Troy,

I've no idea what an Airspeed Lid is :D My decklid is a one off STEEL '55 with the 'eyebrows' grafted in, I think it looks quite good!

I'll PM ya with the answers to the other Q's

Al B
